Why reading is importantDid you know that up to 90% of a child’s brain development happens in the first five years?

Research is now telling us that when babies and children get the stimulation they need – it can have a lasting effect on their future.

Sharing stories, rhymes, singing, talking and playing with your child from birth builds a foundation for your child’s future development that can last a lifetime.

Why is First 5 Forever important for Queensland families? We all want Queensland children to have the best opportunities in life and have the greatest chance to succeed. Current research shows the valuable role parents and caregivers have in supporting their child’s early development.

First 5 Forever aims to provide strong emergent literacy foundations and life-long learning capabilities for all Queensland children 0-5 years, by directly supporting parents and primary caregivers as their child’s first and most important educator.

Let’s work together as a community to support each other and build on the endless opportunities families have daily to interact with their children and provide opportunities for learning. This means spending time in the early years talking, playing and reading with our children so their growing brains get what they need!

What is Sensory Storytime? It’s a fun, interactive program offering social opportunities and early literacy for children who may not find a traditional storytime comfortable. Sessions have limited spots available to keep the numbers low and more manageable for children who can not cope with large crowds; visual schedule boards to allow the children to follow the sequence of the session; storybooks read aloud and felt boards or other props used for extra participation and visual cues; as well as sensory opportunities through bubbles, scarves, beanbags, music and movement.

Who should attend? Any children aged between 0-5 who may find a traditional storytime session too overwhelming – those with sensory processing challenges, or children with developmental delays. We encourage parents/caregivers to bring siblings along to the sessions.

Why singing, baby bounce, and fingerplays are important for babies• They help baby become aware of their bodies• Gentle tickle rhymes like ‘Round and round the garden’ build anticipation as

they come to know what is coming up next – this helps develop their thinking reasoning and memory skills

• Bounce rhymes help baby associate the rhythm of language and movement – building awareness of how language and words are constructed

• When we sing to babies, we generally sing slower and words are more pronounced which helps babies learn language

• Nursery rhymes are often very repetitive and actions and movement help babies to learn the meanings of words

• Most of all – it builds wonderful bonds between you and your baby.

Animals Should Definitely NOT Borrow Library Books . ..

. . . because books would always get wet with a whale.

Be sure to keep your library books dry. Don’t leave your book in the rain or read in the bathtub.

. . .because a snake could never turn the pages.

Turn pages carefully from the top. Never turn down corners.

. . . because a mouse could never manage to carry it home.

Keep your books in your library bag, they are safer that way.

. . . because a squid would get ink on the pages.

Remember, don't write or colour in the book.

. . .because a squirrel would bury it for winter and forget where he put it.

Remember to return your books to the Library on time. Don’t forget where you put it.

. . .most of all because there wouldn't be as many books for kids!

Some important tips for taking care of your library books

Tips for reading with babies and toddlersNarrate the day Talking to your baby may be the most important thing you can do to promote language development. Conversation helps your child become accustomed to hearing a stream of speech, and it stimulates the language pathways in their brain.

Touch the text For infants and toddlers, moving your finger under the words as you read them serves as a clue that those funny little symbols have meaning and are the source of the story.

Be expressive Create distinctive voices for the characters in a story, and use sound effects (Bonk!) and exclamations ("Oh no!") where appropriate.

Let your toddler be the teacher Have them show a stuffed-animal friend how a book works. ("Teddy doesn't know it's upside-down. Can you fix it for him?") Then encourage your child to narrate the story from what they see in the pictures.

Read with your child, not just to them When you sit down with a magazine, give your toddler some board books to look at too. You are demonstrating that reading is important and fun for adults too, and they will want to imitate you.

Book around the clock Don't wait for bedtime! Ease into your morning routine with a wake-up story, or bring out some picture books after lunchtime.

Infants are born with the impulse to make sense out of language and find meaning in the world around them. In a way, they're already reading. Preparing your child for what comes later, such as decoding letters and words on a printed page, is largely a matter of fostering that innate ability.“

Why you and your children should become library members

Regular library use leads to more reading – and reading aloud to your children is the best and easiest way to boost their language and literacy development.

It is the first step to creating a life-long love of books and reading in your child.

What you see on the shelves is just a fraction of what is on offer; membership gives you access to the huge range of online resources as well.

Borrowing library books with their own library card allows children to learn responsibility for taking care of community owned resources that are available for everyone to share.

You have access to all of the fun and free programs and activities Rockhampton Regional Libraries delivers to children and families.

Plus it’s FREE!
