The following is the defensive plan of the WAstern Sector Force trans­lated from a document turned in by the 23rd Marines. The Western Sector Force was the 1st Bn 50th Inf. Rgt. I. We anticipate the following combat situations, and expect that the principles for the guidance 0f combat will bo in accorce~c~ with the several annexes.

A. Plan po. 1:

a) In case the enemy attacks TINIAN Harbor and the PEPENOMARU (TA 534) coast line simultaneously.

b) In case the enemy only attacks TINI.~ Harbor.

B. Plan No. 2: In case the enemy attacks the ASIGA Bay (Yellow Beachs) area.

c. Plan No. 3: In case the en amy attacka UNECHURO (White Beach 2),.

II, In case of an attack , although we will devote our entire strength to destroying the enemy on the beach , teking tho several possibilities into consideration, we will move as foll6~e:

A. In case the enemy has already landed and occupied positions:

a. Plan No.1 (A & 13): We will hold the assembly area to the North of TINIAN Town

and prepare for a close quarters attack.

b. ·Plan No. 2: We will hole the ~xea to the East of HINODE Shrine (TA 628 H)

and prepare for a close quf'..rters attack.

c. Plalll No. 3: We will)hold the gun positions to the West of the No . 1 Air­

field (TA648) and to the Scuth of the main road which rune South of HAGUI Pond (TA 640 NS:X:) ann prepare for a close quarters attack,

B. In such situations, the attack will be made by all hends at ~set, and the enemy will be driven into the sea by dawn.

c. In the avant that we are unable tc expel the enemy by dawn, we will defend a final line to the last man.

PL.AN !10. 1-a:

1. General. While striving with our entire force to destroy the enemy on the beach, we must be prepared to counterattack toward 'riNI.AN Town. (See Map 1).

2. Chart of strength to be employed by several units:

3. Counter-attack:

Strength Entire strength. Entire strength excepting 3d platoon to remain on beach. 2/3 of entire strength About 50 men will continue their present duties.

1. The 2nd Company, during the tine when the main strength of the Battalion has not yet arrived, will hold their present positions. The time for counterattack will be indicated to them separately.

2. Both right and left flanks of the 2nn Company and the lst CompBn¥1 s artillery battery will endeavor to destroy the enemy by directing hoavy fire against the beach. Should the enemy finally land. they will immediately alter th~ir positions and support the counter-attack.

3. The TAKA BUTAI will be responsible for protecting the flank and for occupying strong points for counter-attack in the direction of TINI.AN Town.

4. Deployment ano. Hovement: 1. The 1st Company will mcY& on the main road. 2. Bn Headquarters, 3rd Gonpany, and the T.AKA :BUTAI will

move along the road 800 meters East of the main road. 3. At night, although movement by vehicles will be the rule,

1. General: A part of the force will remain on the PEPENOMAW Coast Line (TA 534) for security. The main strength will counterattack in support of t~e 3rd Bn in such a manner as to harraes the ene~ 1 s flank and interfere with his lan~ing.

2. Principles of Counterattack: a. The 2nd Company will hold its present positions and protect

the rear from counterattack. b. A part of the forces of the TAKA BUTAl will occu~ strong

points on both flanks and its main force will attack from between them. c. The order in which units attack is shown on the map. d . Battalion Headquarters will move forward with the 2nd Company. e. The TAKA BUTAI will defen~ the strong points which it occupies

on the flanks to the East.

leave a part of its forcee on the coast and counterattack as shown on the map. d. The lst Company initially will support the counterattack of

the T}J{A BUT AI and the 2nd Company.
