American States of NatureMark Somos
Harvard UniversityJohn Carter Brown Library Associates Fellow
The state of nature, man’s pre-political condition, is as fundamental a notion in western intellectual history as liberty, property, or the pursuit of happiness, and one that British, American, German, and French reformers and revolutionaries made just as much their own. Yet unlike liberty, the state of nature has vanished from our understanding of the American Revolution and its original designs for a new state, citizenry, and their natural and man-made environments. I aim to re-cover this critical discourse at the heart of the Founding, and its place in the histo-riographies of scientific, environmental, and constitutional thought.
