Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn,

remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings.

BÓG ZAPŁAĆ!

PLEASE REMEMBER ST. FERDINAND PARISH IN YOUR WILL.

“When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my

feet…” LUKE 7:44 Today’s Gospel calls us to consider how we serve God. Do we consume like the Pharisee who simply reclines at the table and

expects to be served? Or, do we contribute like the woman who kneels before Jesus and washes His feet? Every day we

must make a choice. Take or give? Consume or contribute? Recline or serve?

We invite anyone able to help with the church cleaning. Please join us weekly on Mondays at 5:00 pm

and Fridays at 10:00 am. Thank you!

Sincere THANK YOU to all who give their me to keep our church clean. Thank you for your faithfulness and dependability. Please know

that your help is very much valued and appreciated.

Be Thankful in All Things “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) It’s easy to thank God at the end of our day for the things we enjoyed, but if we adjust our perspec ve, we will find blessings we never iden fied as such. For instance, when I was pregnant with our eight children, ge ng up in the middle of the night and feeling uncomfortable or sick or needing to use the bathroom was standard nigh me procedure. One night, I was about to grumble to myself when a powerful inspira on overcame me. Instead of complaining, I could be offering up this suffering for others who were not so blessed as me. I thought of the pregnant women on the streets of India or in Guatemala; women without indoor plumbing and a clean so bed. Here I was complaining instead of giving thanks for my comfortable circumstances. Imagine from God’s vantage point, all the mes we complain to Him, or even just to ourselves. I have pointed out to my kids that God sees all – everyone in the world – all at once. So while we are complaining about some trivial thing, God sees the suffering of his poor and forgo en. Instead of complaining, we should be thanking God and offering up our inconveniences for those who are less fortunate and for the conversion of sinners. To suffer is not just an opportunity to strengthen our own souls, but something that can be united to the sufferings of Christ and given in love, like a prayer, for the salva on of poor, misguided sinners.

Lest we neglect some of these opportuni es, I will point out an area we all experience in our lives that we can turn into a treasure. The people that seem to darken our doorways – the difficult people in our lives – are actually blessings. Why else did the saints seem to be a racted to nasty, unlovable people? One reason was because they had the ability to love like Christ, but they also saw the opportunity. Consider these Scripture passages: “For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you” (Luke 6:38). And in the Bea tudes in Ma hew 5:3-10 we are told, “Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.” In the context of these promises, it makes sense that the saints gravitated towards those that the rest of us find difficult. Rather than seeing someone to avoid and complain about, they saw these people as blessings. For if we are kind and merciful to those that don’t deserve it, then God will keep His promise and show us mercy we don’t deserve. In effect, when we are kind and forgiving and pray for those that hurt us, we are also helping ourselves. So this year, when it’s your turn to share what you are thankful for, imagine how your list will surprise the others at the table. It will be an opportunity to share your new perspec ve with others and for everyone at the table to open their eyes to blessings they might have overlooked before. Not all of the Evangelists tell each Jesus story the same, and some of the Evangelists don’t tell certain Jesus stories at all. But a priest told me years ago that when we read mul ple accounts of the same story in Scripture, we really need to sit up and take no ce. Certainly Christ’s Passion and Resurrec on are the most well-known example of this Ma hew/Mark/Luke/John repe on, but we can point to another example on this 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time: a woman’s anoin ng of Jesus with costly perfumed oil. Today we hear Luke’s version (7:36-8:3), but Ma hew (26:6-13), Mark (14:3-9), and John (12:1-8) all tell the same story. Kind of, anyway, which is how these mul ple tellings usually go. But varying details aside for now, Jesus put it this way: “Amen I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be spoken of, in memory of her.” And here we are. In Ma hew’s and Mark’s versions, the woman is uniden fied by name and Jesus is in the house of Simon, a leper in Bethany. In John’s version, the woman is iden fied as Mary--sister of Martha and Lazarus--and Jesus is again placed in a house in Bethany. In Luke’s version, though, Jesus is placed in the home of a religious elite (“A Pharisee invited Jesus to dine with him, and he entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table”), and the woman--while also uniden fied by name--is iden fied as a sinner (“Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee”). Interes ngly, too, while Ma hew, Mark, and John all put the story just before Christ’s

Passion (with direct references in each telling to Jesus’ upcoming burial), only Luke posi ons it early on in the Gospel narra ve. No burial connec on here, just an amazing story of love and forgiveness. I say this because something else catches my eye in looking at

the four accounts. In Ma hew’s, Mark’s, and John’s version, the

woman anoin ng Jesus is cri cized by onlookers as being wasteful/

overindulgent/extravagant for using such expensive oil (by today’s

standards, up to $20,000 by some on-line accounts) on Jesus when

it could have been sold with the money given to the poor. In Luke’s

version, however, Jesus himself is cri cized--at least in the

thoughts of the homeowner--for allowing the sinful woman to

associate with him at all (Luke tells us that she bathed Christ’s feet

with her tears, dried them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed

them with the oil). “If this man were a prophet,” Simon ponders,

“he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is

touching him…” Jesus gently chides Simon for this, and then helps

him see that “her many sins are forgiven because she has shown

great love; but the one to whom li le is forgiven, loves li le.” I like

these Gospel stories because each version speaks to me of God’s

wasteful/overindulgent/extravagant love for us. Too-good-to-be-

true love. But true just the same. “Amen I say to you, wherever this

gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be

spoken of, in memory of her.” Amen in return.
