DISTRICT 112No teacher contract yet
Next negotiationsession Sept. 21By Chuck Friedbauer
District 112 and the Chaska Educators Association had not settled on a new contract for its teachers as of Sept. 14.
“We are still apart on com-pensation, but everything else is pretty much settled,” said CEA president Tim Griffi n. “We’re at different places in terms of wages and benefi ts, but (both sides) are going to have to fi nd a common ground and compro-mise at some point.”
In an e-mail response, Dis-trict 112 superintendent David Jennings said there is little news to report.
“We continue talking be-cause we do not have an agree-ment,” he said. “I am bound by the agreement at the table to say little more than that.”
The next meeting isn’t until Sept. 21, due to the start of the school year and scheduling the involved parties, said Griffi n.
“All our negotiators are full-time teachers, so we wanted to make sure we took the time needed to start off the school year,” he said.
There are no other meetings scheduled past Sept. 21, but that doesn’t mean that date will
bring a solu-tion.
“If we don’t g e t i t d o n e then, we will schedule more negotiations,” said Griffi n. “Everyone is try-ing to be creative in fi nding a fair contract for both sides.”
The impact of the recent teacher contract settlement in the Eden Prairie school dis-trict has yet to be seen. Those teachers reportedly agreed to a wage freeze, but still received step and lane increases, which provide additional pay for years of service and schooling reim-bursement.
“I’m not sure of their defi ni-tion of a freeze in that situation, but it’s not anywhere near the defi nition used by the District 112 school board,” said Griffi n.
School districts around the state are experiencing similar unsettled contract situations to that in District 112, as only about a dozen have settled contracts.
“Our goal over the last fi ve contracts I’ve been involved with was to have it settled by August,” said Griffi n. “This is the fi rst one in a long time where that hasn’t been the case”.
MINNETONKA SCHOOL DISTRICT
Minnetonka welcomes record enrollment

By Forrest AdamsMinnetonka School District
welcomed nearly 8,400 students (8,392) into six elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school last week.
It marked another year of growth. Enrollment has grown from 7,613 students in the 2004-’05 school year. This year’s fi g-ure was a 2.5 percent increase over last year’s opening day enrollment, according to a school board report. Last year the district grew by approxi-mately 2.8 percent to roughly 8,137 students.
Gains were seen in the high school (6-8) and elementary schools (K-5). The number of elementary school students increased by about 6.4 percent from 3,453 to 3,675. The num-ber of high school students increased by about 0.7 percent, from 2,842 to 2,862. The district grew by about 207 students overall.
There are fewer students in the middle school grades (6-8), down 1.9 percent from 1,842 to 1,807 students. Minnetonka Middle School West houses 902 students, 20 fewer than last year. Minnetonka Middle School East houses 905 students, 15 fewer than last year.
The top three growth schools at the elementary level are Groveland (+56 students, total 563 students), Scenic Heights (+41 students, total 574 stu-dents) and Excelsior (+49 stu-
dents, total 702 students). The largest elementary school is Minnewashta with 755 students. The smallest is Groveland with 563 students.
“That’s not bad for a district with an aging population,” Su-perintendent Dennis Peterson remarked to the school board.
Director of Human Resourc-es Tim Alexander plans to update the board with offi cial
opening enrollment numbers at the fi rst meeting in October.
New teachersJoining the students are
58 new teachers, to whom Al-exander referred as “some of the most high quality staff not only in Minnesota but across the country.” Of the group, 23 have a masters degree or higher; nine different states are represented; and six differ-ent countries are represented.
Twenty-fi ve graduated from a Minnesota college or uni-versity, 23 graduated from an out-of-state college, and 10 graduated from colleges abroad. This represents 42 different colleges and uni-versities.
“Certainly it is going to en-hance the classroom instruc-tion,” Alexander remarked.
