“From the beginning, Jesus associated his disciples with his own life, revealed the mystery of the Kingdom to them, and gave them a share in his mission, joy, and sufferings” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 787).

During these mi

a more and morest from our labors and burdens. Gathering today at God’s invitation in the middle of the summer, let us take the time to learn of God’s great love as revealed to us in Jesus Christ, God’s Son.

In Jesus’ time, plow animals always worked in pairs. The yokes they used were specifically fitted to each animal to ease their burden so the they could work together more easily and share the load. So, when Jesus says to take up his yoke, he offers to share our burdens,

and to help carry our load as a partner on the journey from this Guard –

“…a pastoral council is to be established in each parish, over which the pastor presides and in which the Christian faithful, together with those who share in pastoral care by virtue of their office in the parish, assist in fostering pastoral activity…A pastoral council

The beginning of a new fiscal year brings about changes in parish councils such as our Trustees and Advisory Board. As new Trustees, I welcome Monica Lennie and Austin McBride who will serve as Trustees for a term for five-year terms. I thank our outgoing Trustees, Loretta Gragnani and Mike Santo for their service to the parish in general and for their guidance and suggestions when I first arrived in

the parish a year ago.

As for the Advisory Board, I welcome new members Michael Arcaro, Geri Catala, and Sheryl Granet as they begin their three-year commitment to the Board. On behalf of the parish I extend heartfelt thanks to the outgoing Board members, Kathy Del Guercio,

Michele Hughes, and Ron Prosperi for their years of service to the parish.

I look forward to working with our new Trustees and Advisory Board members as we plan for the future while maintaining our mission to “proclaim joyfully the presence of Jesus to the whole comm.

The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“The way God acts in governing the world, which bears witness to such great regard for human freedom, should inspire the wisdom of those who govern human communities.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1884).

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells more parables about the kingdom of God, particularly about seeking and finding treasure. In the First Reading, God offers Solomon anything he wants, and Solomon chooses the treasure of a wise, discerning heart. As we hear these Sacred Scriptures this weekend, let us listen for the gifts that God offers us and pray for the grace to choose wisely.

Maintenance Matters – Church Flat Roof

Our church flat roof is in bad shape. We are working with the Diocesan Architect’s Office on planning our next steps. On Wednesday, July 19th, a roofing company performed a roof analysis. The roofer took core samples from different sections of the roof. We need to know how many layers of roof we have and what materials are involved. We also had an environmental company on site who will analyze samples for any toxic materials. After we get the results of the analysis, we can put together specs for a Request for Proposal (RFP). We will then invite select companies to bid on the RFP. The cost is expected to be in the low six-figure range. Therefore, we will need to get permission from the Diocese to spend money. We might also need to borrow money. These financial decisions will be discussed by the Finance Council. St. Ann...Pray for us!

Communion Breakfast Thanks

On Sunday, July 23rd, the parish enjoyed a wonderful Communion Breakfast in our Parish Life Center celebrating our parish anniversary. A great time was enjoyed by all as we feasted on scrambled eggs, pancakes, and perhaps the best French Toast I have ever eaten. Thank you to all who came out on a Sunday to share fellowship and food. Of course, events like this do not happen by themselves. Therefore, on behalf of the parish I offer a great big “Thank you” to all who volunteered, especially our committee chairs Joanne Jacobia and Maria Parziale. Thanks to all who helped sell tickets and/or gave up a Friday morning to decorate and arrange the tables and chairs, and/or baked goodies including: Sister Frances, Paula Herdin, Joe and Victoria Rigoli, Angela Portella, Camille and Gabriella Mercado, Joyce Coleman, Sue Caruso, Monica Lennie, Kathy Ambert, Geri Catala, Loretta and Vince Blazovic, Edie Ryan, Dottie DiCarlo, Josephine Spano, Anna Gillespie, Cindy Golembuski, Maria, Alessandra and Ava Parziale, Nancy and Joseph Pisauro, Michele and Sara Hughes. Thanks to the cooks who spent time in the kitchen whipping up our breakfast including: Linda and Peter DeCumber and family, and Eric Hubner. Thanks also to Vince White for taking care of the tickets. And, Thank You to anyone who had anything to do with the breakfast not mentioned here.

Peace, Fr. David

EXTRAORDINARY REFLECTIONS FOR ORDINARY TIME

“Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong.”

1 Kings 3:9

Reflection

Genies that live in lanterns aren’t real; but if they were, and if we stumbled across one and were offered just one wish, what would that wish be? Would we go for unlimited wealth, or ultimate power, or perhaps great fame? In a dream, God gave Solomon that very option: “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.”

Solomon, in his humble wisdom, did not ask God for gold, power, or fame; instead, Solomon asked God for an understanding heart—a heart that would know the difference between right and wrong. Solomon could selfishly have asked anything of God, but he chose something that would be of greater benefit to those whom he was to serve. Solomon was to be king to succeed his father David, and he obviously cared deeply about those he was to serve! As a result of Solomon’s request for an understanding heart, God gave him the wisest heart so that he would (ideally, anyway) be the greatest king who ever lived.

Do we have as much care and concern for those whom we lead or engage with? Do we often ask God for an understanding heart when we are faced with difficult situations or are working with difficult people? Surely, we may all benefit from leading in our jobs, families or ministries with a more understanding heart.

Prayer

God of all grace and kindness, grant us all a more understanding heart—one like that of Your servant Solomon.

Give us greater wisdom, so that we may better serve You and the people in our [lives]. May we lead as servant leaders who unselfishly support the needs of those we serve. Amen.
