14 When each of the content specific deparments give directives to teachers or adopt new policies, those should beavaliable in a newsletter or some other publications that can be sent to pricipals at the schools. Page 2: & LEARNING start doing? Q1 What should departments in … · We need to have alignment of services, alignment of support. Small schools ... 20 Initial use training for new teachers

18 lead quality PD on CCSS, the math curriculum and Reader's and Writer's workshop, finish the district scope andsequence documents, build a robust set of electronic resources to support implementation of the CCSS and thecurriculum

11/21/2015 4:51 PM

19 Separate LA from Social Studies. Social Studies curriculum is marginalized at the expense of LA, which is adisservice.

11/21/2015 5:19 AM

20 Initial use training for new teachers every year in math a big part of it before school starts, but could continue throughfall - not just in the year or two when new materials are adopted. Initial use can/should include an orientation to thedistrict resources, pacing guides, CCSS, assessment. This would help accelerate growth of new math teachers - andensure more consistency across district. (This is in addition to STAR etc not instead of.) When we have all-districttraining days, offer a lot of math training. Offerings on those days has been sparse or non-existent: Here are someideas: COE, CCSS, instructional strategies, using technology, assessment, standards based assessment and gradingin math, teaching to the Mathematical Practices, discourse in the math classroom, making the most of your math PLC.Strong PLCs are doing great work, but we also need an infusion of ideas and information from other sources. I wouldlike to see a day long math institute on the training day once or twice each year. Keep building out the unit planningresources. Having everyone teach the same lessons is not the goal, but we should have enough there that a newteacher or long term sub can find lessons there - and more experienced teachers can find ideas and improve uponwhat they find.

11/20/2015 3:40 PM

21 Coordinate between each other. Rolling out math and ELA scope/sequences has been very challenging. In addition, ithas been difficult developing the common formative assessments. It would be much more efficient having commonformative assessments developed centrally.

11/20/2015 1:04 PM

22 provide REAL instructional coaching (ie: UW CEL) for core subjects and for PLCs in schools. 11/20/2015 12:48 PM

23 Add more arts options for students. 11/20/2015 12:34 PM

24 .? 11/20/2015 12:23 PM

25 Provide coaches again at the building level who can work with teachers on site. 11/18/2015 7:15 PM

26 Make sure teachers are trained in creating and teaching lessons and units that are aligned to the Common Core andNext Generation Science Standards. The Middle School Science kits are atrocious. There needs to be an overhaul ofscience materials available to all middle schools and their teachers.

11/17/2015 9:07 AM

27 Coming out to schools to observe and work with teachers on best practices. 11/16/2015 2:49 PM

28 Departments need to narrow the focus of supplmental materials to the MIF curriculum and give our teachers a specificsense of direction.

11/16/2015 1:57 PM

29 Provide differentiated professional development for teachers with the range of experience. 11/15/2015 9:16 PM

30 Creating scope and sequence Figuring out when keyboarding should be taught Communicate what they are doing 11/13/2015 7:59 PM

31 Literacy/Mathematics-Revise Scope and Sequence Support Plan for Teachers Content Area Coaches 11/13/2015 2:41 PM

32 Science: The kits are at least 20 years old. So other than distributing kits I can't imagine that you need an office forthat. Art: teachers plan all lessons based on common core. Not sure what else a department would be needed for. Icould go on and on. These departments need to pare WAY down and put teachers in classrooms and counselors inbuildings.

11/13/2015 10:05 AM

33 Collaborate with other districts on scope and sequence for math - our teachers have found it confusing, not alignedwith report card and continually changing

11/13/2015 9:52 AM

34 They should come up with a plan to fully implement Balanced Literacy and then support that plan with training. Theyshould come up with their summer PD plan and "opening week" plan NOW so schools can plan long term.

11/13/2015 8:56 AM

35 All teachers should be trained in Complex Instruction techniques and differentiation skills. The district's curriculumneeds to reflect the need for differentiation.

11/13/2015 8:28 AM

36 I believe the Teaching and Learning department should supporting schools at the building level with instructional PD,curriculum alignment, and helping all department (Math, LA, SS, Science, and Electives) align their lessons to theCCSS.

11/11/2015 5:39 PM

37 1. Clear, complete, scope and sequence documents and all related supplemental resources for core instructionalareas, with training, as needed for teachers and administrators. 2. Common formative assessments, aligned to thewritten curriculum, for teachers to use to monitor progress and adjust instruction. 3. Advanced learning - bettercommunication with families and with building principals. Clarity in testing process, testing locations, notification ofappointment times, etc.

39 Working in conjunction with other departments. The overall challenge for all of the departments which severely limitsany real change is that all of the departments operate as silos and we ofter get differing information from differentdepartments. The underlying issue seems to be that each department is driven by their own priorities and funding. They look out for themselves first. Unless this structure, which has existed for years/decades is changed, real changewill always only be temporary, at best. As to Teaching and Learning, instead of being driven by best practices, they aredriven by federal imperatives and money associated with Common Core. If we emphasized the Core aspect overCommon, we would see a difference in the vast discrepances in who is successful and who isn't in SPS. I believeTeaching and Learning should be the leading body within SPS, setting a powerful example of an equitable andeffective teaching and learning system that supports ALL students. In practice, the data is clear - it doesn't. We canpretend we are better than other districts and national test scores, but we are fooling ourselves. 7 out of 10 Blackmales who don't graduate high school will be incarcerated before their 30th birthday (Coates). For SPS, that means,on average, 3.5 out of 10 Black males who enter SPS will be incarcerated by the age of 30. Teaching and Learning, inpractice, is disconnected from this reality.

11/9/2015 1:56 PM

40 Provide Math in Focus PD for new teachers 11/8/2015 3:29 PM

41 Math: Curriculum experts should be doing the work of creating scope and sequence. Advanced Learning: Providecommon language and support for ALO.

11/8/2015 12:34 PM

42 First of all, this is coming from someone that is in Year 1. I'm appreciative of all the help I am getting. I am mostinterested in having the development of pre and post assessments for reading, writing and math for the districtadopted programs. I would also love to see the development of 3 x per year benchmarks at least K-8 and I would loveto see them developed showing where our students should be if they are proficient, close to proficient, or far fromproficient. I am also highly interested (for myself) having K-8 This is what a kindergarten student is learning in literacyand math....documents that are new teacher and family friendly.

11/7/2015 5:13 PM

43 Teaching and Learning should get a calendar together before the school year starts and have courses set up so thatprincipals and teachers can plan. There should be congruence within the delivery with training attached to CCSS,student learning and teacher professional development needs.

11/7/2015 1:48 PM

44 ELL - the executive director should visit schools. She has never been to ours. The dept should be clearer aboutstudent assignment plans for returning back to their neighborhood schools so that families are FULLY aware of theimpact of these changes and can plan for these changes. SP ED - they should put more staff in place over thesummer to review out of district evaluations and get appropriate placements to schools for our new students. Thereare students whose files are NOT reviewed for over a month and this is a compliance issue and not ok for students.Advanced learning dept needs to email parents back when they ask about testing days. Many of our families did notget an email or call when their school testing date was not on the originally schedule day for the school and it causeda flurry of emails to our school. SP ed should start answering/ responding to emails from principals. The exec. directorand the director of schools need to be responsive - it sends a big message of support. Math - change the elementaryadoption since the majority of schools are wasting these resources and not using the district adopted curriculae.

11/7/2015 11:13 AM

45 Middle school curriculum adoption for math, literacy and special education. Workshops/strategies for teachers ofmiddle level advanced learners (Advanced Learning)

11/6/2015 5:23 PM

46 1. Develop a scope and sequence and roll it out to every school 2. Idenity a school wide literacy 11/6/2015 5:05 PM

47 Ensuring we are tiered for differentiated support to schools. The needs in low performing schools vs high performingschools are profoundly different yet we offer the same PD and training, curriculum, etc. for everyone. Apply a MTSSlens to the work, come up with a plan and follow through.

11/6/2015 4:11 PM

48 Prepare "cliff note" versions of pd content and material for school level administrators that would include suggestionsfor how we support the implementation of programs and initiatives. Make these resources available in a sharedlocation (like Schoology). Provide greater lead time for teachers when curriculum changes are coming. Training for thenew math scope and sequence just a few days before the scheduled start of school did not allow for any time forthoughtful planning and implementation at the classroom level.

11/6/2015 3:12 PM

49 Providing curriculum (not the standards), coaching support with implementation and resources. Materials forinterventions as well as for advanced learners who are not identified as HCC or Spectrum-not everyone wants to takethe test.

11/6/2015 3:07 PM

50 - provide a PD-coaching model for schools in the different content areas. These experts will launch a PD and thenwork with grade level teams within schools in order to build on teacher skill capacity, curriculum implementation, andbe able to work with teachers to differentiate instruction - provide differentiation (struggling, advance learning) PD-coaching model - provide curriculum materials and PD to Special education staff

4 C & I need to stop working in silos; begin to use Language Arts/ELL/SPED as the throughline to all of the othercontent and work that is happening. They need to plan and work together. 80% of the principal job is coordiating andcc'ing departments and key people. Monthly coordination needs to be ongoing and supported; just as Cabinet works...this needs to occur in the biggest department that supports school. Exec. Directors should be involved.

13 Attempting to execute plans that aren't finished yet - launching scope and sequence before the units are built, the yearbefore a new curriculum.

11/16/2015 2:49 PM

14 The Special Education training for principals this summer at Garfield High School was really hard to sit through. It wasdominated by sit and get. Also, a lot of the lecturing we had to sit through was information that I believe manyprincipals already new. The was a rough traning. Please don't do that again.

20 They stop sending us separate newsletters. Let's keep all items in the PC. It really streamlines things for us. 11/13/2015 8:56 AM

21 Stop buying most text books. 11/13/2015 8:28 AM

22 The Teaching and Learning department needs to become more accessible and stop being less transparent in the workthat they are charge to do.

11/11/2015 5:39 PM

23 1. incomplete roll outs of curriculum (this year's math rollout for example) 11/11/2015 11:55 AM

24 The scope and sequence docs for math need serious work. This is a major disappointment not only for the teacherswho were craving a curriculum but to PASS that stuck their necks out to say we valued a unified curriculum more thangoing with the recommendation of the adoption committee.

25 Stop pretending that what they are doing is working for all students in SPS, especially low income and students ofcolor. The data doesn't show more than minimal improvement and minimal improvement is based on test scores thatonly slightly move up. According to the latest national NAEP data, test scores are actually down in both reading andmath and the achievement gap has decrease slightly, but only because the scores of white students have decreased.

28 I am not aware of anything you should stop doing. 11/7/2015 5:13 PM

29 Teaching and Learning should STOP doing all day training during the school year. As it is the south end schoolscannot get subs for sickness let alone for training days. Until HR can get enough subs to cover for sickness teachingand learning should pay time for teachers after school or before school starts for training.

11/7/2015 1:48 PM

30 Asking for common assessment development (PLC) work when some subjects don't have adequate materials.Teachers are spending hours developing materials.

11/6/2015 5:23 PM

31 Stop creating ELA supports without involving schools. We can't even use the TC continuum materials because theyaren't aligned. Stop setting up trainings without building out master calendars that include system-wide expectationsso people can actually go to them and not be competing with other offerings elsewhere. Stop offering PD and nothaving enough space or instructors. The TRI day was a disaster.

11/6/2015 4:11 PM

32 This is difficult to answer as I am not really sure what they do in the way of supporting teachers in the classroom. 11/6/2015 3:07 PM

3 Continue with PD for teachers and school staff to build skills and understandting. 11/25/2015 7:25 AM

4 Continue PLC development; it might be time to bring the DuFours to Seattle as a TRI day with Teachers. If this isreally the shift... then let's get it right at the beginning. Have Career Ladder be involved in supporting this work. Weshould also have Content Collaborative Labs - bigger than PLCs where the PLC group is visiting each othersclassrooms once a semester to discuss their learning and aligning their work. All I can say is that the approach of Teaching and Learning toward instruction and pedagogy is a giant smokescreen based on compliance and professional development divorced from what really takes place in schools, especially those schools serving those students least likely to be successful. 1 My teachers would like more tech training on educaitonal applications. 11/30/2015 2:27 PM

2 They should start by making sure that every piece of technology in the Stanford center actually works. They shouldclean all the equipment as well. They should inventory each computer lab in every single school and help schoolsmake the labs look presentable. It is embarrassing how messy and out-of-order technology is in this district.

6 Be very clear with what is expected for technology services and how they are connected; I received a planning tooland did not know it was different that what I was expecting with my new construction... so someone sitting down andexplaining everything coming my way would have been helpful. This is vital for my kids - it could have been a lostopportunity.

Ex: how to enter absences, grades, take attendance, sign up fortraining, view leave balances, etc. Currently feels too piecemeal.

11/30/2015 2:35 PM

2 HR should move staff on administrative leaves faster. I have had a classified staff member on leave for a year now. 11/29/2015 2:27 PM

5 Sending out a complete list of staff members and where they are at on the evaluation cycle. Moving into a new buildingor changing departments is difficult not knowing which cycle and which year staff is in the process. This shouldhappen at the beginning of the school year. Start recruiting teachers from Universities before they graduate. We arecurrently without qualified staff in teaching positions and it is difficult (to say the least) for students, parents and ourbuilding.

He just stands there and waits until I get done so he can pull upthe tables. I think it's absurd that my custodian refused to help a teacher move ONE table down the hall ("It's not in mycontract.") 1 Figure out how to fund our schools better. Its embarrassing. 11/29/2015 12:26 PM

2 Get into our schools - go on site visits and see how the dollars are being spent. Visit a title school, visit a small school, visit a sampling of schools and then bring us together to tell you our challenges and concerns (with our officemanagers). First find out what is REALLY going on before you decide XXX goes to general funds or XXX gets thisFTE. See how schools CANNOT operate with .2 or .4 FTE first... and figure out a way to keep our input in the loop.

3 Find ways to be responsive in a timely manner. I know they are busy and possibly understaffed. However, as aprincipal I spend an inordinate amount of time sending follow-up emails, nagging people, sending photos of work thatisn't done, sometimes for months, or in a couple cases, it took more than one year to get some basic things done. Thistype of problem keeps principals form being in classrooms and engaging with students, staff, and families.

15 The departments within capital projects need to communicate with each other on a regular basis. We have spendmany hours and over 100 emails trying to get a project done in the school. There were so many folks involved that I'vesince lost track. The furniture Dept needs to read the requests we send out from the school and then deliver. We hadthe furniture guy out here at least 8 times this fall. I had to keep walking him through the school needs again andagain. He had things delivered in little installments. Ridiculous! When Stuart L. stepped in -- then things began to work! The custodian's contract needs to be changed. All I hear for basic needs (move a table down the hall, deliver a box toa room, wipe down lunch tables, etc. is "It's not my job." "That's not in my contract." My custodian will even stand andwait for me to clean each table after lunch before he will put the tables away. He just stands there watching andanother staff member and I clean the tables. We don't say, "That's not my job." It's embarrassing! It would be nice ifthe boss of my custodian would take the time to meet me. He was just in the building last week and didn't even stop byto introduce himself. Maybe it's not in his contract.

1 Safety and Security should team with Risk management, Operations, and Facilities to develop a comprehensiveapproach to help schools prepare for catastrophic emergencies. Not just CIMS training, but clear standardizedguidelines on what schools need and how to obtain, store, and replenish these supplies. The majority of our schoolsare not at all prepared for a major catastrophe.

5 All departments need to communicate with principals at principal's meetings. Even if they just update us briefly it wouldbe helpful. I have no idea what some people/departments are doing or what role they play in supporting schools. Iespecially don't know much about the role of the curriculum people; which is really ridiculous. They should be muchmore involved. In fact, I feel like they are this separate entity with no connection at all to the work going on in schools. They make judgements and assumptions but have no idea about the work that is going on in my school. I feel verymuch on my own in this work with the exception of Peter Donovan who has been excellent in supporting CareerLadders and curriculum alignment. I feel there is something lacking with the principal PD I don't really see how it hasimproved my leadership skills. It is beneficial for very new leaders - perhaps APs; but I personally need more rigor. Iwant to look at current research and data, discuss issues that are impacting schools and districts nationwide andbecome stronger and better at running a school. My own goal setting identified a problem of practice so I'm not surewhy so much time is spent on this at principal meetings.

11/23/2015 9:44 AM

6 Research, Evaluation and Assessment should procure effective literacy and math benchmark assessments that alignwith the CCSS and curriculum, and provide effective PD on the data cycle and data drive instruction. Retain the familysupport worker positions within high-poverty schools

11 The REA Department should provide us with the data that we have requested for some time: cohort data. The READept should ask for requests for specific types of data configurations need. The REA Dept should publish a directory.Their staff has grown and it's hard to know who we contact for MAP and other assessments. The REA Dept shouldestablish common assessments district with (IN CONCERT WITH c & i) across the district. These assessments willneed to be open access FOR ALL SCHOOLS. The Prof. Development Dept should fund great consultants (like CathyFeldman) for ALL schools not just levy schools. Don't ALL children across the District deserve well trained andprepared teachers?) I see this as a huge inequity.

11/13/2015 11:49 AM

12 Office of Superintendent and EDs: how many staff and high level positions have been added over the years? Where isthe data that this is closing the achievement gap, raising test scores etc.

11/13/2015 10:11 AM

13 As a District we need to do a better job of marketing the great things that are going on at many of our schools to thewider community at large. There is a lot of wonderful people changing student's lives and the public doesn't know it.

11/11/2015 5:40 PM

14 Please put climate data about the schools back on the website for our public to view 11/10/2015 1:12 PM

15 REA seems to produce a lot of data, most of which is not relevant to the day-to-day work of schools. Test scores andmore test scores is not a way to honestly and fully evaluate the work in schools. It is one and only one marking point.

17 I don't who this goes to BUT I did share this with my Area Director - I believe that SPS should put a moratorium or timeblock on partnership meetings in the month of August. If you are a new principal - you are out of your building for 10straight days. LEV and LEVY etc. as well as other partnerships should be told they can meet with administrators inJune, July, and after September 30th.

11/7/2015 5:31 PM

18 Answering questions within 48 hours which we as principals have to do. I sent inquires to payroll in mid August viaemail and phone message, several times and got no response until end of October. This is unacceptable.

11/7/2015 1:58 PM

19 It would be helpful for all schools to have regular data sets throughout the year, at least quarterly. It is time consumingto manipulate data in ways that are meaningful for teachers and other school staff.

1 Don't really know what many people are doing. It appears to me that the culture in the district is not conducive to thedistrict being in support of schools. I feel they should stop being this separate entity and become more of a support forschools. Definitely need to talk about other things besides race and equity. This topic is extremely important and weare very focused on this every day. But it seems to be the only topic that we cover (with the exception of TPEPoccasionally.) There are many other issues and topics that we need to talk about. Leadership, curriculum, assessment, practical school issues.
