« Lazarovden • Лазаровден » Lazarovden (St. Lazarus Day) is a springtime folk ritual in Bulgaria during which young girls wear their prettiest costumes to sing and dance throughout the village. In Montreal, since 1974, this tradition was celebrated for almost 20 years and organized by Yves Moreau, world-famous specialist in Bulgarian folk dance, and the Gens de Mon Pays Folk Ensemble during a big week-end gathering where fans of Bulgarian folklore and Montreal's Bulgarian community got together. After many years of absence, the event was revived in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014. This year will mark the very last and final edition of Lazarovden and will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the first performing tour to Bulgaria of Les Gens de Mon Pays in 1975 . For this special occasion, all former members of the group have been invited to attend one of the exciting moments of the week-end, the Saturday night «Folkothèque» with Bulgarian and Balkan dances and featuring the «Na megdana» Folk Orchestra with Vassil Markov (kaval), Nikola Markov (tambura, saxophone), Petâr Markov (accordion) and Dancho Markov (percussion). There will also be a short dance performance by the «Bâlgari» Folk Dance Ensemble of Montreal. Belcho Stanev was born in Razgrad (North Bulgaria). A graduate of the Sofia Choreography School, he also trained at the Academy of Music and Dance in Plovdiv. From 1960 to 1995, he led the professional folk ensemble "Varna" in the city of the same name. Belcho also founded the Varna International Folklore Festival held each summer. Since 1980, he divides his time between Bulgaria and Germany where he conducts frequent workshops and organizes two major annual folk dance Camps in Obersteinbach and Bad Bederkesa. Founder of the «Lazarka» Ensemble in Munich, he also established the annual festival of Bulgarian folk ensembles of Germany. For many years he coordinated Bulgarian folklore summer courses for foreigners in his native region of Varna. Belcho has taught in several countries across Europe as well as in Australia and New Zealand. Many of his dances are already known and appreciated on this side of the Atlantic: Bačkovsko Horo Brestaška Râčenica, Drjanovska Râčenica, Pitat me Mamo, Isu Nedo, Mjatalo Lenče, Svatba, etc. For Lazarovden 2015, we are pleased and honored to welcome him exclusively for hist first and only visit to North America.
