Life at the Bible School of the Americas

I was in El Salvador the first week of March finishing up preparations for a Medical Campaign. On March 7th, the arrival date for the campaigners, Nancy broke her femur and I had to fly home immediately. This was the beginning of how life was and how it was going to be different.

First, one by one countries in Latin America began to close their borders. Our team barely got home with the airlines ceasing to fly. Without exception, the wave of the COVID-19 virus has turned our world upside down. Immediately, quarantines were mandated and life as it used to be ceased.

There is shelter at the Bible School of the Americas in Panama … 25 acres with nine buildings where over 80 people live permanently. Thirty-one people are from a foreign country outside of Panama. All these folks suddenly were reduced to wonder how were they going to find food and other basic needs just to live. The first few weeks, they found out that “hoarders” had cleaned out the grocery stores of many basic things they usually take for granted. Sound familiar? And, the government only allowed a person two hours a week to shop for food and other needs.

The school staff encouraged the students to create gardens in the open areas on campus. So, the entire BSAM student body began clearing off space for gardens. As weeks passed, vender trucks began making daily stops at the gates. Now, there are regular venders that come to supply the needs of the people on campus.

While it is not a complete solution, these families have adapted to the circumstances they have been given. Everyone is working together to see that all their needs to survive Covid-19 are met. We ask everyone to keep all these families who are preparing to preach the Gospel to a lost and dying world in your prayers. We need these families to evangelize Latin America. They need our prayers and our help.
