Dear Forrest Park, I want to thank everyone who has called me and prayed for me during my illness the past several weeks. I am sure prayer has helped me get better. In Christian love, Bill Ward

Barnabas Barnabas was more than a mere traveling companion of the great apostle Paul, “He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.” (Acts 11:24) The New Testament’s presentation of the life of Barnabas can teach us some very helpful lessons.

It is easy to find weaknesses in others; however, it is much more difficult to find their strengths. Barnabas had the unique ability to lead others to overcome their weaknesses through their strengths. He was a positive man, one who sought to build rather than to wreck. He was a man who could look into a puddle and see something besides the mud and into the face of a reprobate and see something besides sin. Most of us are what we are because interested men and women have treated us with the spirit of Barnabas. They have seen our weaknesses clearer than we have ourselves, but they have offered that constant, positive encouragement we have needed so badly. Might we not also offer the same to others?

Even though Barnabas possessed many good qualities, he was not perfect. Galatians 2:9 informs us that on one occasion Barnabas was carried away into prejudice against the Gentiles. Along with Peter, he was guilty of not walking uprightly according to the truth of the gospel. This should be a reminder that the best of us have weaknesses. Therefore, we ought always to look to ourselves lest we also be tempted. Along with this constant self-examination may we also strive to imitate the good in Barnabas’ life. May we never fall victim to jealousy, but rather hold up the hands of every faithful servant. We should be men and women characterized by patience and understanding, helping all to find the Savior’s way. How wonderful it would be to live in an atmosphere where the good that is only found in Christianity is practiced by all.

~Chance Blackmer
