1 The 1972-73 Ntmonal Travel Survey IS the latest In a

series of comprehenswe enqulr]es about peoples travell(ng

hab!ts This survey was commm!oned by the Department

of the Environment and tamed out by the Social Survey

Surveys The Survey took place between April 1972 and

March 1973

TravelIncludedIn the Survey

The Survey covers all travel by all modes of transport

w!th[n Great Brltaln and the surrounding Inshore Islands

Excluded from thm de fln[t[on therefore are the Isle of

Man the Isles of SCIIIV and the Channel Islands Two

other elements of travel are excluded Fjrstly journeys

made as a professional dr[ver e g as a bus tra!n or tax!

driver atrcraft pilot or as crew of a passenger transport

vehde and also Journeys the main purpose of which was

thecollect]on ordellvery ofgoods commercially Secondly

on the f]rst SIX days of the recording per!od respondents

were not asked to keep a record of walklng Journeys of

less than one mile although on the f[nal day they were

asked to record thla lnformal!on

Travelby road ISrestricted to that on publ!c roads

Household Th[s comprlaes one person Iw[ng alone or

a group of people ltwng at the same address having

meals prepared together and with common housekeeping

At hotels commercial boarding houses and publlc houses

the household or households of any resldent!al owner or

staff were Included but not the guests even If they were

permanently resident All other addresses not containing

non-private households were excluded

Ellgibleperson All those normally members of the

household at the time of the placlng mterwew

EllglbleInformant Normally the Indlvldual In person

For those aged 3 to 10 the parent For journeys of those

aged 11 to 15 the young person If absolutely unavoid-

able information was taken from the parent rather than

recording period by a member of the household Accord-

IS a household owning or hav[ng the use of a three or four

wheeled motor vehicle for Its recording period

Main driverof vehicle The member of the Ihousehold

who usually dr[ves the most mileage In the veh!cle taken

over the year as a whole

Journey Any travel for a single mafn purpose

Journey stage A subdwslon of Journey reqwred for

each change In the mode of travel or each new t[cket

needed

Ma!n purpoaa of journey The purpose wrthout

which the journey would not have been made

Usual placaof work The usual frequency of vlsltlng

a workplace must be at least on two consecutive working

daysa week (Friday and Monday counting asconsecutlve)

for It to quallfy as the usual place of work

TravelIn coursa of work Term used to descobe

journeys by an Informant while going about hls work or

business exclud[ng journeys between hls home and hfs

usual place of work It should be understood that particular-

ly for certain types of occupation the dlallnctlon between

journeys to and from work and journeys In the course of

work IS not always clear It IS assumed generally that for

persons having more than one place of work journeys

are counted as to and from work only In the case of the

Iocatlon which quallfies as the usual place of work

Publlctranaport Transport available for use or hire by

the general publlc whether publlcly or cmvately owned

including taxis and chauffeur.driven hire cars

Busfinessexpenses These Include tax concessions

and employer contributions to the housaholds motoring

expenditure whether or not they cover the full costs of the

relevant journeys
