from Alex and Tampi...greetingsgreetings
Hej småles,
This year has passed so fast and we’re coming
to the end of 2011. It has been such an eventful
year. We held the first ever Småland Book of
Records, ran our Småland General Elections
and sworn in our new group of Ministers. Now
we’re going to end of the year with a bang as we
celebrate Christmas, our favourite season of all!
To help countdown to Christmas, we have
a special advent calendar in this Bug News.
Children in Sweden look forward to the advent
calendar every Christmas because it’s always
filled with lots of surprises. Flip to page 20 to
find out more.
Our annual Christmas Bazaar is back for the 5th
year! Why not try your hand at running your
own stall and being a little boss for the day? It’ll
be lots of fun and you’ll get to earn some extra
pocket money too!
We’ve declared December the month of love,
as this season is very much about giving and
spreading joy. We are running the småles soft
toy campaign at the Bug House - For every soft
toy you redeem, we will donate S$2 to UNICEF
Malaysia. Use your discounted kid's meal
coupon to purchase a chicken nuggets kids’
meal at the IKEA Restaurant and 1 Euro will be donated to the IKEA Foundation to educate a child.
Have a blast this holiday!
Alex and Tampi (Lele too!) God Jul and with Big Bug Hugs,
1 Euro will be donated to the IKEA1 Euro will be donated to the IKEA

“Greetings Alex and Tampi (Lele too), though I cannot go to the playroom anymore as I am 1.31m tall, I still visit IKEA. IKEA is a place that cheers me up. Why don’t you add another family member for Alex and Tampi? That way, Alex and Tampi can have a happy family just like everyone.”
“Hej Selina, thanks for your
suggestion. In fact, Alex and
Tampi have a cousin called
Angna from Thailand!”

“Hej, Alex & Tampi and Lele! I would like to give a few suggestions to improve Småland for other younger småles to enjoy. Such as, a bigger shoe to climb, a larger berry pit and a higher slide. New merchandise could include toys and lunch boxes with cute Lele or Alex and Tampi pictures. I'm sure other småles will love them! With some (not very big) hugs.”
Avril Chang, 8 years old
““Welcome to Småland” Alex, Tampi and Lele greeted. This is the magical forest where many småles meet. Småland invites us to learn and play, encourages us to recycle, and has lots of fun-filled activities for us to participate in. Swedish meatballs are yummy, and so is Småland! A wonderful place to be in!”
Ang Li Hui, 9 years old
“Hello, this is my first time writing to you and I say: This is the place where I would hide from school. Cast off your troubles! Rush into Småland! IKEA always understands, the needs of us kids, it's never unplanned!”
Sherilyn Sim, 10 years old
“I am very happy to be a småle. My all-time favourite food is the meatballs from the IKEA Restaurant. I can eat 5 meatballs at one go! Oh, not forgetting the yummy chicken wings. My family loves them too! I hope my letter and drawing will be published because IKEA has always been special to me.”
småle Yee Wern sent us a picture of

she baked using the

“Dearest Alex and Tampi, I hope we can have
Halloween, Christmas and Chinese New Year
celebrations. For Halloween, we can replace the
plastic balls in Småland with balloons that are
shaped like pumpkins. For Christmas, the floors can
be covered with white carpets. And for Chinese New
Year, the IKEA restaurant can sell Chinese titbits.”

The holiday season is all about spending time with family,
friends and loved ones. And who better to share with us
how they spend their holidays than our Family Ministers! Hello småles,
I want to share with you how I celebrate Christmas.
One week before Christmas, my family and I will put up the Christmas tree and decorate with ornaments. Some of the Christmas decorations are from IKEA! I will go to church to watch the Christmas Cantata on Christmas Eve to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
On Christmas Day, we will have a delightful breakfast and eat a scrumptious dinner with my family. My favourite moment is to see the happy look on each other's faces when we unwrap the presents.
Happy holidays to all citizens, may all receive blessings and joy this season!
Warm wishes, Crystal
Hej småles! I celebrate Christmas by going to church. I think during Christmas, we should spend time with our families because sometimes some people don't see their parents every day.

Not sure what to expect at the Christmas Bazaar? Last year’s Christmas Bazaar stall owner shares her experience:
The 2010 Christmas Bazaar was an enriching learning experience for my cousins and I. I would attribute the success to selling appealing and quality products at a very special price (half the market price) for fellow småles. It would also be good to have some trusty helpers. My cousins played a critical role in promoting our products. Without them, I would not be able to attend to all the customers during the peak hours (11.30am – 1.30pm). It was so much fun! :) Duang ZenDuang Zen

Christmas is very special to Swedes. This well-loved holiday is
celebrated on Christmas Eve. Decorations are put up, the smell of
delicious baked pepparkakor (gingerbread cookies) fill the home,
and Christmas ham is served at the Christmas feast. Christmas
trees are decorated with stars, straw animals, candies, small
gnomes, Swedish flags and ribbons.
Here's what makes Swedish Christmas so unique.

13 December is St Lucia’s Day. It is celebrated in memory of the Saint Lucia who gave up her life for her faith. Usually, the eldest girl in the family will dress up as St Lucia, or “Queen of Light”, in a long white dress and bright red sash. She wears a crown of candles on her head and serves her family Lucia buns and coffee.

Tomte, or Swedish Santa Claus, is actually a small gnome that has a long white beard and wears red robes. He rides on a Julbock, or straw goat, and comes during the night to fill children’s stockings with gifts.
Christmas Eve is a family affair. Swedish families clean the house together from top to bottom in the morning. In the afternoons, they sit down together to watch Donald duck cartoons on TV. When night falls, while many families indulge in Christmas feasts, some still follow the tradition of eating bread and broth.

In 2008, småles used their collective dållar savings to adopt an elephant
named Intan at the Singapore Zoo. Intan bid farewell to Småland in 2009
after she turned 14 to enjoy more adventures outside. It has been 2 years
since we last heard from Intan. Lets’ find out what she’s been up to.

A page from Intan’s diary: 8.00am – *Yawn* Still sleepy but the mahouts*
are already here to clean out our stables. I’m
looking forward to my breakfast. Do you know
I’ve gained a little over 500kg since I arrived from
Indonesia in March 2005! I’m now 2,163kg, but
that’s healthy for a 16 year old elephant you know!
9.00am – Play time in the exhibit! I’m going to
check out what my mahouts have put into our
enrichment boxes. It’s usually filled with yummy
bananas, my favourite!
11.30am – Time to show off my raw elephant
power of moving logs at the Elephants at Work and Play animal show. (I also get to splash people with water at the start of the show!).
12.00pm – The day’s getting hotter so I’m going
to go for a long dip in the pool. And also going to
throw some sand on my back to keep cool.
3.30pm – Another show. This is also a chance for me to perfect my understanding
of Sinhalese. Do you know I’m bilingual? I used to only ‘speak’ Bahasa Indonesia, but
since coming to Singapore, I’ve
learnt more than 20 commands
in Sinhalese (which is the official language of Sri Lanka).
6.00pm – End of the day (spent most of it
playing), and we’re called back into the stables.
Before the mahouts leave for the day, they turn
on our heat lamps so we’ll stay warm and toasty
at night. I love my home in the Singapore Zoo!

The Singapore Zoo will also play host to a herd of 25 elephants. Starting from 19 November over 5 weekends, there will be a flurry of other activities, such as a REAL elephant parade! There will also be an Elephant Parade-Nikon photography contest, where participants will have a chance to win Nikon Coolpix cameras. Find out more at www.elephantparade.com.
The Elephant Parade is an open air art exhibition of decorated life-sized baby elephant statues. Famous and upcoming artists contribute to the conservation of Asian elephants and the public awareness of their life threatening situation. On 11.11.11 (which sounds like Elephant! Elephant! Elephant! if you say it fast enough), the Elephant Parade will bring a herd of over 150 brightly painted elephants and swarm the streets of Singapore for two months. Painted by local and international artists, each elephant is a unique piece of art and will set Singapore ablaze with colours at famous landmarks such as the Esplanade and Marina Bay.

Did you know?
A T–rex is about
12.1m, roughly the
length of a bus. But
the Spinosaurus
is even larger and
stands at 15.2m!
Dinosaurs are some of the largest creatures the world has ever
known. The dinosaurs dominated the Earth for over 165 million
years, but mysteriously went extinct 65 million years ago.

Spinosaurus
Tyrannosaurus rex My full name is Tyrannosaurus rex (most people shorten it to T–rex). I am probably the most well-known meat-eating dinosaurs of all. I have a very large head and am 4 times stronger than a lion. I’m also very proud of my long teeth which are 20cm in length! In spite of my huge size, other dinosaurs always laugh me because I have very small arms. My arms are only about 1m long with 2 finger-like claws on each.
I’m the Spinosaurus, one of the largest, heaviest and tallest dinosaurs of all. My name also means “Spine lizard”, because I have large spines extending from my backbone. I have crocodile-like jaws with rows of needle-sharp teeth which are great for digging into my prey! Do you know, I was the star of the movie Jurrassic Park? In the movie, I fought with the T–rex and snapped off his neck, claiming my title as the King of Dinosaurs. Roarrrr!
Get to know two of history’s most famous and fearsome dinosuars.
