How do animals store Energy? Plants?
What gas do animals breath in and what gas do animals breath out during the day? What about at night?
What gas do animals breath in and what gas do animals breath out during the day? What about at night?
1
What is Photosynthesis?
1. Plants use photosynthesis to make sugars
2. Photosynthesis is a process that captures energy from sunlight to make sugars that store chemical energy
3
What is Photosynthesis?
3. Equation for whole photosynthetic process
6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 (sugar)+ 6O2
Identify the reactants and the products.
4
Where does Photosynthesis occur?
1. Photosynthesis in plants occurs in chloroplasts
a. Takes place in two parts: stroma and thylokoid
2. Most chloroplasts are in leaf cellschloroplast
stroma
grana (thylakoids)
5
Functions of Photosynthesis
1. Plant produce food for themselves and other organisms.
Where does ALL the energy originate from? 6
2. Regulates Earth’s environment (removes carbon dioxide from Earth’s atmosphere)
Functions of Photosynthesis

Factors that Affect Photosynthesis
Temperature• As temperature increases, the rate of
photosynthesis increases to a maximum and then decreases when temps get too hot.
– The rate peaks at a certain temperature, at which many of the enzymes that catalyze the reactions become ineffective. Also, the stomata begin to close, limiting water loss and entry of carbon dioxide.
9
Factors that Affect Photosynthesis
Light Intensity
• Rate of photosynthesis increases as light intensity increases
• However, at some point all available e- are excited, and the maximum rate of photosynthesis is reached
