Mean You need to know how to calculate the. The Mean is the average of a group of

numbers. 2, 6, 8, 4, 4, 0

To calculate, add up the numbers in the group: 2+6+8+4+4+0= 24 and divide by the number of numbers in the group 24 divided by 6 = 4.

The mean is 4

Page 11: Graphing › Pictographs › Bar Graphs › Double Bar Graphs *No line graphs (reserved for our Stock Assignment) Mean and Mode Trends and Interpreting

Sample Question

What is the mean of each data group? Explain how you know.

1. 2, 3, 42. 1, 2, 5, 4, 33. 5, 5, 1, 1, 0, 64. 10, 10, 15, 25, 40

Page 12: Graphing › Pictographs › Bar Graphs › Double Bar Graphs *No line graphs (reserved for our Stock Assignment) Mean and Mode Trends and Interpreting

Mode The mode is the number that occurs

the most often in a group of data. 4, 5, 2, 5, 6, 5, 1, 1

5 occurs more than any other number. 5 is the mode.

There can be only one mode. If no number appears the ‘most’ than there is no mode.

1, 4, 5, 2, 5, 6, 5, 1, 15 and 1 both occur the same number of times. There is no mode.

Understanding Information in Graphs

You need to know how to read and interpret graphs

Trends: Increasing Decreasing Staying constant (about the same)

Sample QuestionExplain the trends you see in this graph. Why do you think these trends are occurring?
