Conductive Education
Background
Conductive Education was developed at the Peto Institute in Hungary over
40 years ago and has been widely established in many centres around the world. Word of the program’s
methods and successes continues to spread. Findings suggest that the earlier children embark on peto-
inspired programs, the better their progress will be. Peto’s program of
intensive tasks avoids the traditional division of treatment into speech,
motor and psychological therapy in favour of a unified approach and a
single conductive education teacher.

Awareness
WHY Conductive Education? In a unique way Conductive Education opens the door to learning which can be adapted to many levels of dysfunction. Physically challenged children are taught to see themselves as active participants in the world as it is, learning to compensate for their disability and gain a mastery over their condition.
A crucial component of Conductive Education is the establishment of high self-esteem and each participant’s belief in their own success. FACE is driven by the common goal of parents, families, educators and physicians to improve the lives of our children.
The Child
The small group setting environment is stimulating and children learn to socialize and inspire one another.
Specialized equipment and furniture are an integral part of the program and reduce dependence on adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs and other aids.
By adapting to a new environment, working with other children and the conductor, the child learns to develop a new relationship between himself, the world around hum and others. The maximum ratio of six children to one conductor creates a bond between the child and teacher. The child soon learns to
develop a sense of self and is motivated to expand his horizons by competing with his peers, trying new activities and gaining the praise of the conductor.
The Parent
The learning process does not stop with the child. It continues with the parent at home or in a non-classroom environment. With CE a parent learns how to encourage their child to try new things. The conductor shares with the parent the progress being made and will offer areas to focus on. The child will develop at his own pace but his confidence and courage will be shared with the parent.
