The Internet : Mother of all Networks

1970’s US DOD (Dept of Def) developed 1st version of the Internet: DARPA Network (ARPAnet)

Used for quick communication among researchers in various locations.

1980 NSF funds high-speed connection among university centers based on the ARPAnet structure

Infrastructure

A network of networks. Internet “between or among networks

Networks connect computers to allow users to share resources and exchange information easily.

A way for people in network sites ALL OVER THE WORLD to communicate with each other as though they were on the same local area network.

History What is the Internet?

The World Wide Web:An Internet Service

an Internet service that links sites around the world through hypertext documents.

subset of the Internet system

refers to the entire “universe” of network-accessible information

has a body of software, set of protocols and conventions

We use a program called a WEB BROWSER to bring up one of these hypertext/media-based documents.

Hypermedia [linked media] allow us to “travel” from site to site.

What browsers do you know of? Which ones do you use?

What is the World Wide Web

Navigation

Internet protocols allow computers to communicate with each other [ regardless of macs, windows, etc.]

An important protocol is HOW WE LIST WEBSITE ADDRESSES

Every website has an address

URLs are Internet addresses

Browser Uniform Resource Locator

Gateway to the internet

Software application programme installed on your computer/device to allow you to “surf.”

Navigation-Organization

Search Engines are programs that help us to locate things:

The address bar in the Google’s Chrome browser features a built-in search engine. Other browsers may follow suit.

Browsers allow us to Bookmark interesting sites that we may wish to re-visit/access more easily. Web services like Diigo also let us do this.

Navigation-Research-Evaluation

Research & Evaluation Information located, now

what? Information contained on a

website must be evaluated.

RelevancyIs the info related to the prob?Does it contribute to the intention of the search?Does it provide explanation? Examples? Alternative perspectives?

Credibility

12+Evaluate = Read critically

Who provided this information?

Does the site author have authority in that field?

If the site is published by an organization, do you recognize it?

Is it clear when the site was developed and last updated?

Is there a bibliography/resource list included?

Is the content factual/opinion? Theoretical or evidence-based? Fact or fiction?
