THE HISTORICAL, SOCIAL AND POP CULTURE LANDSCAPES OF DOWNTOWNHISTORICAL TOUCHSTONESLas Vegas is the newest city of the 20th century; its history can nearly be encapsulated into a mere 100 years. Here are a few landmark sites that are part of the Las Vegas story. Las Vegas Springs Preserve, the original site of the valley’s water source, now a 180 acre cultural and botanical park that includes Nevada State Museum and other interpretive venues; Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort, the site of the 19th century Stewart Ranch, sold to the rail road, it formed the basis of the historic land action of 1905 that founded the city; Las Vegas Paiute Colony, a 10 acre site deeded to the Southern Paiute Tribe by Helen Stewart in 1911; near Main and Bonanza downtown, it is one of the few urban tribal reservations in America.

ARCHITECTURE OF THE AMERICAN WESTLas Vegas is a laboratory of 20th century architectural styles found in both its residential and commercial neighborhoods: from Spanish Revival to Midcentury Modern. Downtown highlights include the Art Deco Las Vegas High School crowned with stucco friezes of flora and fauna; the WPA era Historic Fifth Street School with its graceful portals and fountain courtyard; the Mission Style El Cortez Hotel Casino (1941) of Bugsy Siegel fame, now on the National Register; The Fremont Hotel, a midcentury gem by famed architect Wayne McAllister; The Smith Center, the city’s glorious concert hall inspired by the Art Deco architecture of Hoover Dam; the new Las Vegas City Hall. Its fleet of electronic digital fins and field of solar light trees make it is one of the most unique civic buildings in America.

NEON VERNACULARNeon is the defining language of Las Vegas. No other city in the world created a neon environment like Las Vegas where the neon sign became the building and the building became the sign. Downtown has the largest historical collection of urban neon that is still in existence anywhere. Highlights include Vegas Vic (1951) and Vegas Vickie (1980) - part of the pantheon of figures that once ruled Fremont Street; the Golden Gate Casino sign (1955), a rare mechanical rocking sign; Binions Horseshoe (1960’s), a neon extravaganza that actually wraps the historic 1930’s Apache Hotel ; Hacienda Horse and Rider (1970’s), the flagship sign of the Neon Museum; Holiday Motel, (1950’s) a downtown classic road side motel sign of the sputnik era.

POP CULTURE DOWNTOWNLas Vegas is America’s pop culture city. From Hollywood movies like “Diamonds Are Forever” to larger than life personalities like former Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, Downtown Las Vegas lives in the public imagination. Here’s to a downtown adventure that might include the private rail road car of Buffalo Bill, the deep fried Oreos at Mermaids, a visit to a casino ATM machine that dispenses gold bars, the Burlesque Hall of Fame on Main Street, the giant fire breathing praying mantis at Container Park, a Frida Kahlo inspired Elvis impersonator on Fremont Street, an Airstream trailer park aimed at urban camping, a forty foot electric paintbrush in the 18b Arts District that is both artwork and roadside sign, a “blast from the past” cocktail at Atomic Liquors, an exquisite “light mural” made from recycled bulbs of the Fremont Canopy, the downtown wedding chapel that inaugurated the Rocky Horror weddings, and even an obscure neon sign of Marilyn Monroe. It’s all part of Las Vegas Pop Culture Downtown.
