21st Century Treatment of

Heart Failure Synchronizing Surgical and Medical Therapies for Better Outcomes

The Kaufman Center for Heart Failure at Cleveland Clinic and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery present 21st Century Treatment of Heart Failure: Synchronizing Surgical and Medical Therapies for Better Outcomes, an educational event for all health care providers who care for patients with heart failure.

Despite significant advances in heart failure management, including pharmacotherapy and devices, and extensive collaborative efforts among professional societies to disseminate evidence-based practice guidelines for management of chronic heart failure, morbidity and mortality remain high. More than one-third of patients with heart failure are re-hospitalized within weeks of hospital discharge. As our population ages, the number of patients afflicted with this disease and economic burden will grow.

Now in its 16th year, the Summit will feature a faculty of world-renowned cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons who will offer a clinically relevant review and discussion of current and future therapies for managing heart failure.

Focused sessions include optimization of medical therapy, management of acute decompensated heart failure, decision making with short- and long-term mechanical circulatory support, cardiac transplant, and critical updates and refining outcomes in the setting of destination therapy.

As a result of attending this Summit, you will be able to do the following:

• Summarize the 30-year history of innovations in medical and surgical management strategies and assess their impact on morbidity, mortality, and readmission rates

• Utilize risk stratification tools to guide management strategies and ICD utilization for improving heart failure outcomes and lowering readmission rates

• Transform performance measures into better care for heart failure patients

• Define the specific population of heart failure patients who may benefit from catheter-based valve technologies

• Assess thromboembolic and bleeding risks in patients with heart failure and atrial fibrillation; prescribe antithrombotic therapy accordingly

• Evaluate current risk-stratifications and treatment strategies for patients presenting with acute heart failure

• Summarize future directions for innovations in MCS devices

• List the occurrence, risk, and outcomes of pump thrombosis

• Describe strategies to manage pump thrombosis

• Summarize the effect of health care reform on cost issues for patients with HF

A B S TR AC T SUBMIS S IO N

The Heart Failure Summit invites you to submit abstracts of original investigation for consideration in the Poster Session on Thursday, October 16 from 5:00 - 6:30 pm.

Abstracts previously presented at other national or international meetings will be accepted. Accepted abstracts will be printed in the syllabus. The deadline for submission is September 26, 2014.

Style Instructions• Figures, graphs, and simple tables

are allowed

• Use of standard abbreviations is desirable; place unusual abbreviations in parentheses after first use of the full term

Poster PresentationsYour acceptance notice will indicate your poster assignment number. Each poster board measures 4 feet high (121cm) and 6 feet wide (138cm); you must provide a copy of the abstract, typed in large type for posting on the board. Illustrations must be readable from distances of at least three feet. Use lightweight poster board only; heavy board is difficult to secure. Push pins will be available on site.
