President’s Message Tony DeFazio
Happy Labor Day everyone! Do come out to our
Labor Day BBQ on September 6.
Carol Poto and Marcus Zeino have set up a nice
Demo Day of Drakes Pride products for your
convenience on Saturday, September 12, from
9:00 to 12:00. This is a great opportunity for new
bowlers to try out some modern sleek bowls.
At the end of the month Long Beach will be
hosting four days of the US Open; men’s Singles
on Sep 27-28 and men’s Fours on Sep 29-30.
Come out and watch some great bowlers play the
game.
Congratulations to all our superb tournament
bowlers who won or placed in August’s events.
As you know Candy has been working with the
City of Long Beach since January to get some

much needed repairs done to our facility. It has
been a long wait with many letters written back
and forth. It takes time for the City and County
to appropriate funds needed for repairs. But
alas, painting will begin in the next week or two
and should be completed by September 18. Yes,
this will be an inconvenience for everyone, but
we will all be happy to get the job done. The
clubhouse will be painted inside and out and the
garages on the outside. There is not enough time
to do the roof and windows before the US Open
or the National Championships. Hopefully those
repairs will occur before the El Nino rains come!
Please be patient during the paint job.
See you on the green!

Ian McKellen shines as Sherlock Holmes, delivering amazing performances as the old and feeble 90-year-old Holmes and the still sharp and witty 60-year-old Holmes. Laura Linney also does an excellent job as Mrs. Munro, and Milo Parker is charming as her son Roger. The three have an amazing chemistry together and every scene that features them is pinpoint accurate. The sets were wonderful, as were the costumes and the make-up, and really helped capture the feel of early 1900s and 1940s England. Backed by strong cinematography, it's a visual feast.

MOVIE REVIEW John Arbogast
Mr. Holmes Currently streaming on Netflix
Mr. Holmes is a look into the life of an old and tortured Sherlock Holmes, with a stellar performance from Ian McKellen keeping the film afloat.
Mr. Holmes shows us the life of a retired 90- something-year-old Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen) who has started to lose his famed mental prowess. After returning on a trip from Japan, where he tries to find some local medicine to keep his mind sharp, he returns to his cottage by the sea. He lives with his caretaker, Mrs. Munro (Laura Linney) and her son Roger (Milo Parker), and Sherlock takes an interest in her son. Roger quickly becomes Sherlock's friend, as Sherlock teaches Roger about beekeeping while Roger, in exchange, asks to read a novel Sherlock was writing about his final case. In flashbacks, a 60-year-old Sherlock (also played by McKellen) tries to solve the mystery of Mrs. Kelmot (Hattie Morahan), a woman who has seemingly begun to lose her mind after two miscarriages and an obsession with the glass flute. Intertwined with the flashback and Sherlock's friendship with Roger, we gain insight into Sherlock's Japan trip.

Message from the
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Fine Arts Affiliates (FAA) is a 51-year-old non-
profit group which raises scholarship money for the
College of the Arts, COTA at CSULB. They would like
to use our facility for their meetings for which they
will pay us a rental fee. They meet seven times a year
on the first Friday of the following months from 9:00
am to 12:00 noon:
2015: Sep 4, Oct 2, Nov 6 2016: Jan 9, Feb 6, Mar 6, Apr 3 (The contract is valid through 2016.)
During this time if you want to practice on the greens,
please prepare the day before to have your bowls
with you so you won’t need to enter the clubhouse.
As you all know the acoustics in our clubhouse are
frightful – opening and closing the door disrupts any
meeting going on inside. Gail Schmoller, a member
of our own club, is the president of this group so we
have nothing to worry about since she is familiar with
club policies and procedures.
An email reminder will be sent before each meeting.

News from the
GREENS COMMITTEE Stephanie Johnson
Last month the greens were groomed and fertilized. We are still waiting for the planer to be fixed by American Golf. Greg believes the mechanic will be ready to work on this in September. The Dennis mower blades have been sharpened and new bed knifes replaced. The older Dennis mower went in for tune-up and repair. Danny continues to mow each of our greens twice a week. We are using the groomer on all three greens every two weeks. During the hot days watering is very important and is being done at least twice a week. I heard that some of the players even got watered! If this situation happens again, just pull the plug to the sprinkler system in the equipment room. The control box is on the side nearest the door. Thanks to all the members following the schedule this month. Happy bowling!

PERCEPTION OF DISTANCE (courtesy of Deanna Amos, Australian Coach)
Some bowlers misjudge lengthwise distances
separating bowls in a head.
The distance beyond the jack at which an object
is fully visable depends on the height of the eye
line and the distance to the objects but is
generally at least a meter.
DITCH________________________________
Illustration 1: distance from jack to ditch
Illustration 2: distance from jack to bowl
The distance beyond a bowl at which an object is
fully visible similarly depends on the eye height,
head distance, bowl orientation (upright or flat)
but is generally at least 2 meters.
DITCH________________________________
Illustration 3: distance from purple bowl to ditch
and red bowl to jack
When an umpire is called, retire away from the head as you no longer are part of the decision making. Respect the decision made.
Always inform your opponent if you wish to leave the green.
Be sure that complete access to the head is accorded to the team with
possession of the rink.

Ray de Groat, a member of Long Beach LBC from
1960-1963, and his wife Greta, visited the club on
July 11. Ray was born in 1926 and celebrated his
89th birthday in August.
He was a student at Wilson High from 1943-44 and
does come back for class reunions. Ray graduated
from City College in 1951 and Cal State Long Beach
in 1954 in Journalism. He was a singer at all City
high school dances and graduation ceremonies.
That was during the day of Joseph McCarthy
hearings & files. His file read: Since 1951 Ray was
an active member of the Unitarian Church. Ray taught school in Garden Grove and Los Alamitos High. At that time,
he lived at 6442 Willow and had four children. Three have since passed away, but his surviving son resides in
Stockholm Sweden. He later moved to Castro Valley where he currently resides. Ray was in the Navy for two years
and was stationed in Pearl Harbor and then served in the Marine Corp Reserve for three years as a sergeant. He
left the service just before the Korean War. His father, Harry, had the last name of de Groot and was a landscape
artist whose paintings can be found in an Auburn Art Museum up North.
To this date, he still owns the bowls that he got from Larson who had been a Champion Bowler.
Thank you Ray & Greta for coming by to visit with us.
