Christine Walker of the Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Com-mission met with the Newbury Selectmen Monday evening.

Newbury discusses regional planningChristine Walker of the Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Re-

gional Planning Commission met with the Newbury Select-men Monday evening as part of the organization's community outreach. His group serves 27 municipalities and is charged with presenting a new regional plan every 10 years.

Selectman Jim Powell pointed out that there really isn't a "region", but three distinct areas with few common interests; Hanover/Lebanon, Newport/Claremont and New London/ Sunapee/Newbury. Richard Wright agreed saying the Up-per Valley is the miracle mile of commercial development. Newport and Claremont are mill towns who have faced tough times, while this area is tourist oriented, with Goshen on its own and Washington oriented toward Hillsborough.

Warner deals with uncollected taxesWarner Tax Collector Marianne Howlett asked the Board

their desire on properties that have been granted property tax payment extensions but have not acted on their extensions; the extensions ended July 1 for the Barbara Erickson Revo-cable Trust, Steven Gerrard and Granite State Forest Products and three others that are manufactured homes on land of another. The Town Administrator said she will make contact with two of the extensions. For the manufactured homes, Marianne said she will create a waiver for the Board to sign, a waiver keeps the Town’s interest in the unpaid taxes. Howl-ett did advise the Selectmen that there is another option in regards to manufactured homes in an established park; the Selectmen can sell the liens to the park owner. She suggested researching this process.

New ramp to Greenfield's Town HallPublic works supervisor Tim Murray has advised the

Greenfield Selectmen that work to install a new ADA complaint ramp to Town Hall will begin shortly. Murray's Department will remove the current stepped sidewalk for $550 and Sullivan Brothers will pave the new ramp for $450, which is better than the $24,000 budgeted for the job. With the savings, the town hopes to install two or three lights along the ramp and conduits for future lights at the parking lot.

Bass sponsors law to preserve the dignity of military funeralsSurrounded by members of numerous

New Hampshire veterans and military organizations at a press conference in Concord, Congressman Charles F. Bass (NH-02) hailed enactment of his legisla-tion to preserve the dignity of military funerals by limiting disruptions before, during, and after services. Bass said: “When I came back to Congress last year, I started meeting with New Hampshire vet-erans on a regular basis to hear firsthand what issues Congress should address. This was at the top of their lists, and I couldn’t have been prouder to introduce legislation in the House last April to ensure that the men and women who have fought and died for our country receive the greatest dignity and respect as their families grieve.

Bass was joined this morning by Gold Star Mother Jean Durgin of Henniker, whose son Russell was killed in Afghani-stan in 2006. Bass was also joined by Ma-jor General William Reddel III, Adjutant General of the New Hampshire National Guard; the Chairman of the State-Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs Committee in the New Hampshire House of Repre-sentatives Al Baldasaro (R-Londonderry), USMC (Ret.); the Vice Chair of the State Veterans Advisory Committee Bobby

Broneske, USAF (Ret.); Elaine Driscoll, USAF (Ret.), a member of Bass’ Veterans Advisory Board; New Hampshire Ameri-can Legion State Commander Ken May-nard; Commandant of the New Hamp-shire Veterans Home Barry Conway; and Captain Bill Joransen, USN (Ret.) of Nashua, the immediate past president of the New England District of the Associa-

tion of the United States Navy, as well as members of New Hampshire veterans groups, including the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the New Hampshire Air Force Association, the Combat Motorcycle Veterans Association, Rolling Thunder, and the Patriot Guard Riders.

Gold Star Mother Jean Durgin of Henniker joined Congressman Charlie Bass at his press conference.

Business or Pleasure Delivering the American dream

Chris' Concert donates $7,300 to Antrim's Grapevine The Grapevine Family & Community

Resource Center received the $7,300 pro-ceeds from Chris’ Concert on Tuesday.

Grapevine Executive Director Kristen Vance said, "The generous contribution from the Chris' Concert proceeds comes at a time when we need it most". She said the funds will support Better Beginnings, the Grapevine’s core program for families with children birth to 5 years of age.

“The Grapevine lost $40,000 in annual funding due to cuts to the state budget in 2010 and 2011. As we work to build The Grapevine's sustainability, we have been relying more than ever on local support and fundraising," Vance said. Presenting the check were Cheryl Barlow of Harrisville and Denise Barlow of Peterborough.

Also on hand for the presentation were concert organizer and master of ceremonies for the concert Russell Novotny of Peterbor-ough, and Christine Patten’s parents, Marcia and Roland Patten of Peterborough. The blues concert, held July 21 at Granite Gorge, Roxbury, was organized by the friends of Peterborough native Christine Patten, who died suddenly in 2010 at the age of 46.

Other major concert organizers, unable to be present for the ceremony were Doug Aborn of Stoddard and Steve Barlow of Chesham. "We are honored to receive this support in Christine's memory, and are so grateful to the Barlows, Doug Aborn, Russell Novotny, and to the many people, bands and businesses that contributed to the great success of the concert," Vance said.

The Grapevine, a small nonprofit estab-lished in 1996, serves the Antrim, Benning-ton, Francestown and Hancock area.

Among its programs are parenting edu-cation, early childhood programs, a parent cooperative preschool, a teen center, before and after school programs, a Timebanking project, a community wood bank, communi-ty suppers, and information and supported referral to services and resources that help struggling families meet the basic need for food, shelter, employment and healthcare.

Concert organizers present the $7,300 proceeds of Chris’ Concert to the Grapevine on Tuesday. In the front row, from left, are Grapevine Executive Director Kristen Vance, and organizers Denise and Cheryl Barlow. In the back row are organizer Rus-sell Novotny, and Chris Patten’s parents, Roland and Marcia Patten. Holding The Grapevine sign are a few of the many residents served by the grassroots organization.
