No need to replace your generatorIndustry practice has always dictated that increased power output requires generator replacement. However, through extensive innovation, research and development, BRUSH has developed an alternative response to this challenge which eliminates the need to replace your generator.

In fact, we can boost the power output of your BRUSH generator by as much as 23%* when we replace your conventional rotor with a radially-cooled version. Furthermore, when this procedure is combined with an upgrade to the heat exchanger, power can potentially be increased by an outstanding 35%*. The increased output occurs because a radially-cooled rotor improves the airflow through the rotor windings, allowing for increased rating of the generator.

CASE STUDY:Statoil Norne FPSO

Problem: Statoil wanted to increase power output without incurring the expense and downtime of replacing their existing BRUSH generators.

BRUSH Performance Upgrade: BRUSH replaced the existing conventional rotor with a radially- cooled version, resulting in a 23% rise in available power output and by combining this with an upgrade to the heat exchanger a further 12% was achieved to give an overall increase in potential power output of 35%. Now Statoil only use the upgraded generator, keeping the second on standby for planned outages and unscheduled events. In addition, Statoil benefit from greater flexibility and more power.

PRISMIC® A50 EXCITATION SYSTEM UPGRADE Problem: Demanding environmental

requirements – in particular, compliance with LCPD (Large Combustion Plant Directive) 2 – demanded an upgrade of the digital excitation system at E.ON’s Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station. High reliability and dependable support were both essential to the successful completion of this project.

BRUSH Performance Upgrade: BRUSH fitted the PRISMIC® A50,taking just 14 weeks to manufacture, test and deliver the product, which successfully met every requirement.

BRUSH electrical engineers installed and commissioned the system, providing flexible site support and gaining site acceptance from the National Grid.

For dramatic dirt contamination reduction The BRUSH GMS PPV (Positive Pressure Vent) upgrade significantly reduces dirt contamination, whilst also reducing the potential hazard of hydrogen ingress. Lacking external blowers and motors, the BRUSH GMS PPV gives a passive upgrade to the existing exciter housing. Many BRUSH customers undergoing an initial PPV upgrade have returned to us for additional unit upgrades because of the many benefits that such a procedure can bring.

Dirt contamination – affecting brushless exciters Dirt contamination is a common problem for brushless exciters, with unfiltered ambient air being ingested by the exciter fan to replenish air that leaks out of the exciter housing. Typical leakage areas include door seals, base seal and the shaft seal. Miscellaneous openings, which also contribute to dirt contamination, include those for entry of the cooling water piping, as well as oil piping, electrical wiring and conduit into the housing.

Make-up air vents – a major cause of dirt-laden air ingress

Adding to the problem of dirt ingress is the exciter’s ventilation scheme. There are three zones in the OEM brushless exciter – the fan, bearing and diode wheel zones; and because the make-up air vents are located in the diode wheel zone, it will inherently operate at negative pressure (below atmospheric pressure), providing a virtually unlimited opportunity for dirt-laden air to enter the exciter. The PPV upgrade reduces the rate of air exchange and provides a hydrogen-free exciter environment.

BRUSH GMS PPV – delivering an ideal solution

The BRUSH GMS PPV alleviates the problem of dirt ingress by providing manageable control of the make-up air and improved sealing of the various openings and penetrations into the housing zone. This results in a number of benefits:

—— Both the diode wheel and bearing zones operate with positive pressure

—— The fan zone is now the only area with negative pressure, so it’s the only zone in which make-up air can enter. This reduces the potential for air to enter the housing via the door, base and bulkhead interface seals by around 75%

—— With the potential for air entering the system limited to the fan zone, it is now possible to control air quality, whilst also minimizing the volume of make-up air via use of a properly designed filtration unit and improved sealing. The make-up air enters the filter unit, passes through the pre-filter and primary filter and then through a pressure-actuated flow control valve, which uses static pressure in the diode wheel zone to maintain approximately 1-inch water gauge

Improved compressionAs well as changing the air intake locations, the BRUSH GMS PPV completely strips the existing rubber seals throughout the housing and installs new seals. In addition, the doors are fitted with latches to provide greater seal compression, and all penetrations into the housing area are sealed as well. The housing is cleaned, re-assembled and then painted to match the existing color.

Reducing As an effective means of reducing dirt ingress into the OEM’s brushless exciters, the BRUSH GMS PPV offers the opportunity to reduce exciter maintenance and the risk of electrical failures arising from dirt accumulation on the electrical components. In addition, the PPV upgrade decreases the risk of hydrogen ingress.

BRUSH GMS PPV UPGRADE

At their power station in Centralia, Pennsylvania, USA, TransAlta initially requested a PPV upgrade on their No. 2 exciter, with highly beneficial results in air quality and considerable life extension to the unit. The benefits of the upgrade to their No. 2 exciter soon resulted in a request for a PPV upgrade on their No. 1 unit.

This typically demonstrates the trend that BRUSH have observed, whereby clients have a PPV upgrade performed on one exciter, observe the beneficial results – and then have the same process carried out on multiple units. Recently, NIPSCO and Mississippi Power have also undergone similar single unit/multiple unit procedures.

For example, to minimize changeout duration and disruption, we’ve retained the 19" rack format for our processors and I/O cards so that minimal upgrade panel re-wiring is required – and, in most cases we can replace the existing rack without metalwork modifications. We’ve also developed interface converter boards that allow conversion from original terminals to new high-density I/O boards, dramatically reducing the need for wiring changes.

PRISMIC® A32 EXCITATION CONTROLLER UPGRADE

Problem: A customer needed to upgrade generator control panels whilst keeping disruption and downtime to a minimum.

BRUSH Performance Upgrade:BRUSH replaced the MAVR system with a PRISMIC® A32. In addition to reduced downtime, the PRISMIC® A32 also provided greater accuracy and flexibility, whilst utilizing a Windows-based Human Machine interface.

High-tech, high-performance, low-risk, low-costThe latest networked PRISMIC® PMS uses multiple 32bit Intel low-power ARM-based processors to run its core control algorithms. This 500MHz RISC-based machine is specifically designed for industrial Ethernet applications and combines significant processing power with high network throughout – and with minimal power consumption, it eliminates the need for a heatsink and fan, so as to significantly increase performance.

Increased reliabilityReplacing multiple legacy processor cards (and incorporating all watchdog and communications functionality previously supplied on a separate card), an Infineon TriCore 32bit network processor gathers data from proprietary plant monitoring units and distributes it over a deterministic Ethernet network. This reduction in component count increases reliability and availability.

Flexible configurationThe Ethernet multicast facility of the PRISMIC® PMS application allows for multiple-master configuration, so that I/O data can be accessed at different geographical locations. Consequently, localized control of any power system segment mitigates against network communication problems – and since the communications network is divided, a dormant master can take control over the newly isolated section.

Maximum controlWhere fibers can be damaged, PRISMIC® PMS offers dual redundancy options to ensure maximum and seamless performance. Ethernet communications allow upgraded power management systems to be easily expanded to encompass additional power system equipment, whilst multiple power management systems can be connected by using Ethernet over copper, fiber or microwave links. USER GUIDEOpen Internet Explorer, go to www.brushparts.eu,press the Check PC Set up button to seeif your computer is capable of running the Parts Direct catalogue.

01 Check the compatible computer specification

From the homepage, press the Register button.This will take you to the first screen for the registration which needs to be completed.

02 Registration

After receipt of your unique UserName and Password from [email protected], you are ready to log on to the BRUSH Parts Direct site.

Enter your UserName and Password into the required field and press Login to proceed.

03 Login

To complete this search, you require the complete serial number. This can be found on the rating plate located on the BRUSH Generator.

On the homepage, select the ‘Serial’ option on the top tool bar. Select Search for a Serial option.

Enter the serial number of the generator into the box provided.

04 Search by Serial Number

It is important that the correct part for your machine is supplied, therefore you must provide the serial number of the machine. Search for your serial number and load up the machine data screen.

On the top tool bar select Search Part Number.

Enter the required part number into the field provided and press the magnifying glass to start the search.

This will now show you where this part is fitted on to the machine. Click on the part number, in blue on the left hand side, to be taken to the screen with price and stock checking capability.

05 Searching for Part Numbers

BRUSH PD Mobile BRUSH will initially conduct a full survey into site conditions to ensure seamless installation. We will then put into place the necessary equipment that will allow measurement of partial discharge, and a full installation report will subsequently be provided. Via access to our Helpline or through an agreed programme of visits, we will arrange for a BRUSH PD Engineer to visit your facility and perform PD testing at your site – and these tests will determine the magnitudes, rates and polarities of voltage pulses created by partial discharge.

After rapid collection of relevant data, the information will form the basis for a complete written report; comprising a full review of your PD data and an assessment of the condition of your stator winding insulation – and an emergency Helpline will be available to answer technical queries or concerns raised by your on-site maintenance team. Whilst detecting partial discharge, BRUSH’s permanently installed equipment will not affect your machine’s operation or reliability in any way.
