Message from our CEODear Friends, “Vision is seeing something before you see it, so that you can actually see it” (author: unknown). The aforementioned quote not only reflects a powerfully insightful message, it also represents just how relevant it is to what we’ve experienced over the past year at Mariners Inn. We officially embarked on a journey to expand our mission and services in a way that will continue to successfully address the needs ofthe vulnerable target population that are seeking support to combat thedisease of addiction and homelessness. We continue to be blessed beyond measure, because there is no greaterfeeling than helping to save lives. We recognize that our fortunate positionto be able to do so would not be possible without the unwavering supportof the community, our friends, donors and stakeholders. It is tremendously challenging for nonprofits in the human service arena tosecure the type of fiduciary support that will contribute to the long-termgeneral operating needs of organizations like ours. While that factualpremise is supported by the data related to agencies providing services tothose in need of help to regain their dignity and respect, it’s not a barrier toour success. We remain steadfastly committed to providing the type ofservices, resources, compassionate professionalism, expertise and love tothe people we serve with a desired outcome of them returning to theirfamilies and the community clean, sober and ready to confidently embracethe future. Thank you for believing in us and our mission. More importantly, thankyou for helping us return men to their families and the community cleanand sober. Finally, I implore you to visit us and/or our website to witness, first hand, why we passionately serve our mission. We believe, witheverything we do and say, that Recovery is Real…and Begins atMariners Inn! David Sampson, LMSWChief Executive Officer

Celebrating Recovery“You have to go through the struggle in order to get to the success.”-Scott, Mariners Inn Alumnus Scott is a well-known face in the Mariners Community. This could be perceived as a negative, but the truth is quite the opposite. “This nest was everything I needed and could hope for,” says Scott. After graduating from the program for his second time, he knew that hecould not continue the life he was living. It took bottoming out, pureexhaustion, paranoia, and a feeling of being fiendish before Scott realizedthat he could not do this by himself. The key to his continued success, fellowship. “You have to take part in the program, stick with it, and keep trying. Support systems and accountabilityare important,” says Scott. He describes Narcotics Anonymous as a placewhere you can not only learn awareness and how to listen to yourfeelings, but how not to let them affect you in a negative way as well. “Sobriety feels weird for an addict, but it feels a lot better than usingdrugs.” Through total surrender and a willingness to change his way of thinking,Scott now chooses every day to be exactly who he is. “I show up, do work, and get something from it.” We are proud to report that not only did Scott graduate from college afterstarting his recovery, but he did so with a 3.86 grade point average. Hecontinues to develop his skills in videography and production, while alsoworking at Mariners Inn five days a week. If we could end Scott’s story of success, we would have to do so with oneword that he recommends be practiced daily, gratitude. -Written by Austin Essique
