Never. Ever. Underestimate. Someone’s. Abil ities.

That was the lesson that my wife and I receivedearly in October. The person delivering thatmessage? My seven year old son, Ryan.

On an otherwise calm October 11, that “calm” wasshattered when Ryan’s grandmother – my 78 yearold mother – fell at her home next door whilecooking dinner, hit her head on the kitchen cabinets, and was unconscious. My 15 year old niece ran overto our house, crying and tell ing my wife thatGrandma had fallen, and there was bloodeverywhere, and she wasn’t waking up.

Now, my wife and I have the same occupation. We’re both respiratory therapists, just at differenthospitals. We are quite accustomed to dealing withemergency situations. As for me … I was at work ata small hospital 40 miles away. My wife was athome, with the kids (Ryan and Lexi), cleaning thehouse.

Quickly, my wife asked if anyone had called 911, asshe quickly put on some different clothes other thanthe ragged ones she was wearing to clean thehouse. Hearing this, and unbeknownst to anyoneelse, Ryan picked up the phone and called 911himself, for his grandmother.

Now is where it gets even more interesting. Ryanhas been a member of Cub Scouts for a little over ayear now. He has the “rank” of a Bobcat Cub Scout. At his den meeting, they had JUST learned what todo in an emergency situation – less than two weeksprior! His quick thinking and quick actions helped getemergency personnel to his grandmother’sassistance quickly.

To understand why this is even more amazing, youhave to know some things about Ryan. See, Ryanhas been diagnosed with high functioning, low levelautism. His mom and I are sti l l not entirely convincedof this “diagnosis”; we were pressured into gettinghim tested, as so many parents are these days. The“definition” for autism was expanded several yearsago, and then a few years later, al l the experts went,“Oh! Look at all the new autism cases!” DUH! Youjust expanded the definition for autism so that itencompasses nearly everyone! We resisted thetesting because we didn’t want someone to just slap

a label on Ryan. But, pressured as we were, werelented and got him tested. Our initial fears wereconfirmed: they just wanted to place a label on him.We received no further help, whatsoever. I t was as ifonce the label was applied, we were set adrift in themiddle of the vast Pacific Ocean in a rowboat, not aparcel of land anywhere in sight, with no oars, sails,or provisions. No help in dealing with this new“diagnosis” has ever material ized, despiterepeatedly asking for help.

Ryan also has a trio of communication problems. Hesees a speech and language pathologist everyweek, both at the school he attends, and with anexceptional outside professional speech andlanguage pathologist that we found. This is hissecond one; the one we saw previously that wasconnected to a large, esteemed children’s hospital inKansas City was awful, and did absolutelyNOTHING to help him. After 24 visits (which is ALLthey would allow), the only thing we have to show forit is a $6,000 bil l that we’ve agreed to pay on at $50per month. To il lustrate, in less than six visits with hiscurrent speech and language pathologist, we (hismom and I) saw HUGE improvements in his speechand language skil ls.

His outside speech and language pathologist hasdiagnosed him with childhood apraxia of speech, expressive language disorder, and auditoryprocessing disorder. She has even mentioned thathe seems to have all the signs of something that iscalled Einstein Syndrome. With the exception of notbeing left handed (he’s right handed), he has ALLthe signs and symptoms. Every. Single. One. As hisspeech and language pathologist has stated, Ryanis a very complicated case.

Despite being “late” with virtually every childhooddevelopment “landmark,” his mom and I KNOW how

bright Ryan is. When he was 14 months old, andright after he started walking independently, he sawthe can of Pringles on the kitchen table that hewanted. Except, they were behind a heavy spicerack. He knew he couldn’t pick up the spice rack, sohe proceeded to take every jar out of the spice rack, and gently set them on the floor. Once he had all thespices off of the spice rack, he could then removethe rack as an obstacle by gently setting it on thefloor, gaining access to the Pringles behind it. Hethen gently set the Pringles can on the floor, andreplaced first the spice rack, and then all of thespices, one by one. I don’t think I would havebelieved it had I not sat back and witnessed itmyself, with my own eyes.

Today, Ryan has discovered the joys of drawing. After avoiding anything to do with a pencil , pen orother drawing instrument for so long, he now drawshis favorite Transformers, dogs, houses, moviecharacters, etc. His speech has progressed so, sofar. His speech and language pathologist is veryproud of the progress he has made. His mom and Iare extremely proud of the progress he has made.Even his first grade teacher has commented in arecent parent-teacher progress report (via a Zoomcall , due to the pandemic) just how much progresshe has made since she first met him in July, duringsummer school.

As for my mom, she is doing well . Due to thehypertensive crisis she was experiencing, she spentone night in the intensive care unit of our localhospital for close monitoring. She ended up with asmall subdural hematoma, and they wanted to makesure the hypertensive crisis didn’t make it worse (itdidn’t). She got to come back home the next day, when her CT scan showed that the subduralhematoma had actually shrunk in size overnight.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Around here, our hero is a little seven year old boy. He won’toverwhelm you with long speeches and elegantprose, but he’s a hero, nonetheless.

Never. Ever. Underestimate. Someone’s. Abil ities.

Imagine if you had a time machine, and could goback to the time when there were good platformvideo games? The golden era of platform gameswere the mid 80's unti l 95~96. After that, platformgames were left out, being supplanted by fightinggames, 3D racing games and FPS’s.

But, a good platform game reminds us, the affectivememory, of the platform classics of years past:Sonic, Mario, Castlevania, Donkey Kong and others, which were so good, and are missed these days.

Go Back To Hell With Slain: Back From Hell

In this game you are Bathorin, a warrior who hasdied. Exactly, the game begins with a wraith, in thehero's mausoleum, awakening the hero from hiseternal sleep to fight a terrible evil that has befallenover the land.

The hero, however, does not want to come back tolife, and complains with the wraith, in a very funnycomic antic.

Only, he rises from the grave, and goes through thedevastated world to eradicate the forces of evil .

Nostalgia And Heavy Metal Are The Ingredients

The Game has a dark Gothic look, with greatgraphics. Created by Andrew Gilmour, it has severaltalented veterans in its production, such as BarryLeitch on the additional soundtrack and Curt VictorBryant (ex Celtic Frost) as the main composer.

The game does not take itself very seriously, from itsbeginning. including even the jokes with Heavy

Metal. Bathorin considershimself a “metal god,” and hasall the traits of rockers from the70s: long hair, a giant swordand very heavy metal guitars. After a while, you get thefeeling of being in a Slayermusic video.

The game was released on March 24, 2016, andwas bombarded by criticism that it was not a finishedproduct, with several gl itches and gameplayproblems. In August, the Back From Hell versionwas released, fixing the launch issues.

In its reissue (Back from Hell), it received bettercriticism from professional critics.

The game was released for Nintendo Switch, PS4,Xbox and PC.

Castlevania Was The Inspiration

The game was heavily inspired by the Castlevaniaseries, with many mechanics reminiscent of the oldgames.

However, when playing for a long time, you feel thatsomething is missing. And, this thing could be abetter polish on the mechanics of the game.

The elements that refer to Castlevania are all there:the Medusa heads, the flying enemies, the zombiesthat rise from the earth … all elements check.

Dracula ? No, not in this game

Rise From Your Grave!

Tom Araya ? Nope, Bathorin…

The game was created on the Unity-2D engine, theUnity section dedicated to two-dimensional games. But, because it uses an engine rich in OpenGLeffects, its visuals are fantastic. The game is set inan eternal night ful l of l ight effects. There areexplosions, shadows, reflections that make all thedifference, and create a medieval atmosphere oftorture and beautiful oppression.

The player has a normal attack mode, accomplishedwith his sword, and a projecti le attack mode, whichconsumes mana. The projecti le attack mode givesthe advantage of distance.

The use of the sword is not only offensive. I t ispossible to block attacks from opponents with it, andto deflect projecti les that enemies shoot at you. But,you need to get the right timing (which requirestraining) to deflect enemy shots.

In the game, the hero must free six kingdoms, destroying the evil boss of each one, in order to freethe world from darkness.

Many, manyplatforms

The Honest Criticism

Well, the game is beautiful. Thanks to the Unityengine, it has an incredible particle system, and it isreally impressive. The music is also great, and theanimations are also very well done, with lots offrames, leaving the characters with fluid movements.

I t is not a game that requires a lot of hardware. Itested it myself on my notebook with Intel video, andit worked wonderful ly.

I t has support for joysticks, which greatly improvesits gameplay, since a game like this asks for a quickresponse that a keyboard would never be able todeliver.

The game features a wide variety of boss fights,mini-boss fights, sub-mini-boss fights and macro-sub-mini-boss fights, which wil l guarantee at leastsix hours of play (but wil l be more).

Submini-boss

Now, I have to talk about the problems I found in thegame. Mainly from its mechanics.

Not Everything Is Thorny Rosy In Slain …

The game mechanics resemble the first Castlevania, but much more difficult. And, despite all its positiveaspects, it seems that the game's creators put aninsane difficulty just to artificial ly lengthen itsduration.

Other than that, the mechanics are bad. Thecharacter does an automatic animation whenperforming a sequence of three sword attacks. Now,if you need to jump, it won't happen, because thecharacter wil l be locked in the animation sequence.

And, as the game is very dynamic, it wil l ki l l Bathorinmany times. But, as he already died, it doesn't stopthe game from continuing. The character justrespawns at the nearest check-point. Yes, the gamehas this flaw. There is no way to save anywhere youwant, but only at check-points, which can be veryfrustrating, depending on the stage you are in.

Other than that, when striking with the sword, thecharacter advances one step for each sequence ofthree sword hits. In abyss edges, or with nearbytraps (and the game has many), this can kil l thecharacter easily.

Verdict

Pros:MusicVisualsAnimationsControls are good, but game mechanicshamper them.

Cons:Insane difficultyStupid mechanicsCombat doesn't have much varietyHigh frustration rate (due to the itemsabove)

My score is 6.0 - Good, but not great, and there aremany reasons to disappoint the player.

But, the game is on Halloween promotion at GOG,and for the promotional price, it can be an option toplay for the upcoming holidays.

Stretchly is a helpful program that reminds you toperiodically take short breaks when you are workingon the computer. According to the application,“Taking regular breaks when using a computer isscientifically proven to be important for your physicaland mental well-being. ”, and Stretchly is specificallydesigned to help you take these breaks. By default,it wil l remind you to take a short 20 second breakevery 10 minutes, and a longer 5 minute break every30 minutes.

When you start Stretchly, it wil l run in the systemtray. Clicking on the icon wil l open up a menu fromwhich you can quickly check how long it wil l be unti lthe next break starts, and also easily skip to the nextlong or mini breaks, or pause all breaks for a certainamount of time.

Also accessible from the Stretchly menu are thepreferences. Here, you have a few options for thebreak reminders, such as whether or not to displayexercise tips during breaks, or to show break

reminders on all monitors. On the Schedule tab, youcan change the length of mini breaks and longbreaks, and set how often they’l l occur. You alsohave the option to enable Strict Mode, which wil lprevent you from being able to skip any breaks, thereby forcing you to momentari ly pause from yourwork.

You’l l get a notification right before the next break isdue to start. During a break, a large reminder screenwil l pop up with a message giving you some quickexercise and relaxation tips, along with a progressbar to indicate how long unti l the break is over. Youalso have the abil ity to skip any break if you wish todo so, or postpone it for another few minutes.

Summary

I think Stretchly can definitely help you stay morerelaxed while working (Unless you end up finding the

break reminders annoying, of course), and itperformed well in my testing of it. My only real issuewith Stretchly is that when installed it wil l take upabout 180MB of hardrive space, which somehowseems far bigger than what a simple reminderapplication should be. Either way, though, I wouldsti l l recommend giving Stretchly a try.

by Agent Smith (Alessandro Ebersol)

The documentary “The Social Dilemma”, whichpremiered on Netfl ix in September, 2009, interviewstechnology experts from Sil icon Valley to show howsocial networks are reprogramming civi l ization.Former employees of companies like Google,Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest tel l howthe executives of these companies not only knowthis, but also manipulate the algorithms to inducebehavior in people.

Social Dilemma? What Do I Care?

I have already written about how Google constantlymonitors its users, uses so-called surveil lancecapital ism to earn a lot, and profi les everyone, savesinformation about them in databases, often in othercountries, which the laws of the user’s nativecountry, are not valid.

But it’s not only that. Beingconnected, nowadays, in some caseseven becomes a matter of survival, since there are people who useWhatsapp as a work tool. And, as forWhatsapp, how many times did two

people talk, about, for example, dog food, and then,

when opening Facebook, to have dog foodadvertisements appearing on the side bars? Magic?Does Facebook read my thoughts? However, it’snothing like that. 24/7 surveil lance, even when notapparently connected, it is always listening. And,thanks to the entire telecommunications, cell phoneand internet infrastructure, it is not just a passiveaction to monitor the user. No. The whole apparatusof social/communication networks and applicationsis actively used to influence its audience.

If They Were Just Targeted Advertisements, ItWouldn't Be So Bad.

No, of course not. Open your email and findhundreds of advertisements for Viagra, increaseyour penis size, find singles in your area, etc. I t getsvery annoying sometimes. But, one can survive that. With some care and spam filters, Ad blockers, andother tools, one can avoid these advertisements andinteract on the internet.

But, no. I t is worse, and it gets much worse. But,how?

Well, I ' l l look at how social networks profi le theirusers and use targeted messages. The figure belowil lustrates the architecture of the user profi le. Thereare several ways in which a user can be profi led, which depends on the application as well . Thegeneral user profi l ing process is as follows: Rawdata from online social networks is collected andanalyzed in relation to various aspects such as:activities, images, text data and geographic location.

The Social Dilemma

Page 11: pclosmag.compclosmag.com/download.php?f=2020-11.pdf · +6/)87/ "5+37 +-4 :86 /55 "28:

PCLinuxOS Magazine Page 11

In this phase, the data relating to the number ofactivities performed, the images posted or profi lephotos, data presented by user and the user'sgeographic location are extracted separately. Withrespect to the images, the details of the image andits features are extracted using appropriatealgorithms. The respective data is analyzed and therelated/unrelated data is classified usingclassification mechanisms. Then, based on theclassified data, users are grouped into distinctgroups with group name and functionality.

After obtaining the details of the user and theirrelated groups, the number, type and pattern ofactivities for each user is extracted. Based on thelargest number of activities and the influenceexerted on others by a user, the user's behavior isobtained. Thus, when analyzing this pattern ofbehavior on online social networks, the user's profi leis defined.

Notice here a very important detail : users, when theyare profi led, are classified in groups, called clusters,

by specific affinities, which are identified when theseusers are profi led. And, it is a very important detail . Iwould say of vital importance, for the companies thatcontrol these networks, and, unfortunately for itsusers, it is one of the worst aspects of socialnetworks.

The Internet Has BecomeA Giant Echo Chamber …

Thanks to profi l ing and classification, socialnetworks have become giant echo chambers, realbubbles that keep people away instead of bringingthem closer, and create an il lusion about theperceived reality that is very powerful and real. Ialready had the opportunity, using YouTube, toaccess a channel of extremist ideas, in politicalterms, with a YouTuber who had a strong speechagainst his opponents, and often insulted peoplewho did not share his opinion. I wil l not mention thechannel or YouTuber, since he does not deserveadvertising or any other means to spread hisextremist views. And, I accessed his channel a longtime ago when it was a small channel, and whenvideos from his channel appeared on my timelineagain, I chose to ignore them. I t was content that isnot important to me.

Okay, his videos never appeared on my timelineagain. Some time passed, about two years, more orless, and I was curious: Did that guy's channelclose? No more videos of him ever appeared on mytimeline, and I thought he had shut down his channeland given up. I looked for the channel, searching inYouTube, and there was his channel, firm andstrong, with over 100 thousand subscribers. And Iwas speechless: Yeah, being rude and spreadinghate speech is worth it. Gee, I 'm doing it wrong, withmy innocent Linux videos. I should speak il l of othersand gain followers.

However, this classification that applications make ofthe public transformed the internet into echochambers, which separated people by theirtendencies, their profi les. The danger of that? I t wassimple: minorities think they are majorities, think thateveryone thinks the same way (because thealgorithm hides different ideas) and creates adistorted view of reality. Thus, groups of people onsocial networks cannot be analyzed as majorities, orminorities. In fact, it's not even possible to know itssize, since the algorithms make it difficult for peoplewith different characteristics to interact, creatingbubbles and fi l l ing these bubbles with certain

groups, each classified in a different way, which isnot transparent to its users.

The Implications Of Living In An Echo Chamber

The implications of being “trapped” inside an echochamber, on social media, are quite frightening.Otherwise let's see…

• New ideas are not reached. There is no diversity inthe messages that reach users, only more of thesame.

• As a consequence, because the user is bombardedby only one type of information, political polarizationwil l increase, and often, also the intolerance withopposing opinions, both online and in real l ife.

• Another result of this is that each group finds itselfthe majority, since it is never confronted by contraryideas.

• Within these bubbles, people tend to acceptinformation that corroborates what they believe, even if that information may be false.

• The yearning for l ikes and attention generates thegradual disappearance of rational thinking in favor ofgroup thinking. In other words, the herd effect isaccentuated, and its influence can literally generatearmies of zombies that do the same thing, becausethe others also do the same.

• And, it was discovered that l ikes on Facebookgenerate injections of dopamine, that create instantself-satisfaction, which studies have shown, generate addiction like injections of heroin.

• Obviously, after a user becomes addicted to likes,he wil l be more active on the social network, to getmore likes, as a good addict.

And, real dangerous consequences also come fromecho chambers:

• Anti-vaccine groups gain fol lowers, usuallyattracted by conspiracy narratives.

• People believing that the earth is flat have alsoincreased, due to conspiracy theories spread acrosssocial networks.

• And, last but not least, according to AhmedBensaada's book, The Arab Spring: Made in theUSA, All the instigators of the Arab Spring uprisingswere well-educated young people who mysteriouslydisappeared after 2011. I t is worth remembering thatsocial networks (Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, etc…)played a very important role in influencing thousandsof young people (a collective brainwashing) to taketo the streets, in the popular uprisings between 2010and 2012.

The Mechanisms Of Social Control, Used InSocial Media, Are Old

Yes, this is very old. And, they can be credited toEdward Bernays. Bernays said: “The conscious andintel l igent manipulation of the organized habits andopinions of the masses is an important element indemocratic society. Those who manipulate thisinvisible mechanism of society constitute an invisiblegovernment that is the true dominant power of anycountry. We are governed, our minds are shaped, our tastes are formed, our ideas are suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. . . in almostevery act of our daily l ives, whether in the sphere ofpolitics or business, in our social conduct or in ourl ife. Ethical thinking, we are dominated by arelatively small number of people. . . who understandthe mental processes and social patterns of themasses. They are the ones who pull the strings thatcontrol the public’s mind, take advantage of oldsocial forces and create new ways to connect andguide the world. ”

Bernays in 1917

Edward Bernays was Sigmund Freud's nephew, anda pioneering mind behind advertising, modernadvertising and the public relations field. Bernays'influence was enormous. Leaning heavily on hisuncle's ideas, he developed highly successfulmanipulation techniques that are sti l l used today, notonly by companies to sell consumer products, butalso by the powers that are, in Bernays' words,“control l ing and regimenting the masses”.

PCLinuxOS Magazine Page 13

The great potential of using insights from grouppsychology to control the masses is partly a functionof the fact that an individual can be influenced by agroup or crowd, even when physically isolated. AsBernays pointed out in his book, Crystall izing PublicOpinion, a crowd "does not merely mean a physicalaggregation of a number of people. . . the crowd is astate of mind" (Crystall izing Public Opinion, EdwardBernays). In group identification, your mind andbehavior wil l be altered by the lasting influence ofgroup psychology, even without any other groupmember physically present.

When identifying with a group, the individualsubordinates self-analysis and a careful search forthe truth in favor of maintaining the group's interestsand cohesion. And with their critical capacitiesweakened by the influence of group psychology, they become highly susceptible to psychologicaloperations designed to target repressed orunconscious desires and emotions, and are thusmanipulable.

Freud's studies have shown that there is informationthat is captured emotionally before it is processedrationally. Thus, in the face of information that wouldcause outrage in the public, this audience would notprocess this information rationally, but emotionally, and would accept it as a truth, or, something to bevehemently combated. Take, for example, fake newsabout how pedophil ia would be more of a sexualorientation, and therefore should be part of theLGBT community, which has been circulating onsocial media in 2018.

After circulating for a long time, it was debunked. But, not before going around the internet and leavingmothers, fathers, grandparents outraged with theLGBT community. Think about how many Whatsappmessages this photo montage appeared. And,perhaps worse, how many people sti l l think it is true.

The Algorithm: The Invisible Hand

Social networks are addictive, and encourageconstant engagement. However, al l the engagementof users with their social media does not happen bychance. I t is careful ly crafted by the algorithms. Thepurpose of the algorithms is to make the user stayon the social network for as long as possible, consuming the content they offer. In fact, socialnetworks struggle for the attention of users. And, toget more attention, the algorithm manipulates theuser.

Attention economics is an approach to informationmanagement that treats human attention as ascarce commodity and applies economic theory tosolve various information management problems.According to Thomas Davenport, in his book, Theeconomics of attention (The Attention Economy:Understanding the New Currency of Business),today, attention is the true currency of business andbetween individuals.

YouTube, Facebook, fighting for your attention

Many digital platforms compete for attention, and thebest way to get people's attention is to study how themind works. There are several persuasiontechniques used in the technology industry to winpeople's attention, an example of which is YouTube.YouTube wants to maximize the time you spendwatching videos, so they introduced "autoplay", sothat the next video opens automatically and youspend more time watching, or consider Facebook'sdefault behavior of automatically starting a video inthe news feed without you having to click on play. And, because the video interested you, most of thetime, almost unconsciously, you forget about work orother tasks and keep watching. But, it doesn't stopthere. For the user to remain connected to the socialnetwork, the algorithm feeds increasingly interestingcontent, to keep the user connected. Result: if theuser started watching videos of kittens, after 45minutes, he wil l be able to watch videos of l ions ortigers, to keep him connected. And, this trend isfol lowed in all subjects. I f the user becameinterested in a political page to support candidate A,from a party B, on Facebook, after some time, several pages of candidates from that party wil l haveappeared for this user, or even pages oforganizations that support this party, in an increasingway.

The Echo Chamber Isolates

These echo chambers, created by social networksand search portals, isolate users, and often keepthem from what they are really looking for. So muchso that nowadays, when I need to search, I use atleast 5 different search engines, since Google'sresults are no longer reliable. I t does not report allexisting results, but fi lters those that it "thinks" thatwould interest the user. Besides, this bubble ofresults can be manipulated by commercial interestsof the search companies themselves. Example: Trysearching for Linux is better than Windows 10 in theBing search engine, to see what results it returns.Bing belongs to Microsoft, and despite saying that it“Loves Linux”, don't believe everything you see onthe Internet…

Spoiler: what Bing responds for linux is better thanWindows 10

Final Words

Well, if you made it this far, I got your engagementand, I think, your attention. And, no, there is noalgorithm involved. Just the desire to spreadknowledge about how social networks manipulatetheir users, how personal data has become abargaining chip in this new economy of surveil lancecapital ism, and, how people must know this, so thatthey are no longer manipulated, either by buying oneproduct, vote for a candidate or condemn or acquitanyone, because of the influence of social networks.

As for the fi lm, watch the Social Dilemma, availableon Netfl ix since September, 2009. I t's veryinteresting and scary; a real-l ife horror movie.

No directions did they bother to send

Haven't had a rest since I don't know when

Everything happens to me

Boot my computer see the screen of death

Do control delete but don't hold my breath

So confusing ruining my health

Everything happens to me

Tried an antivirus to find help for me

Thought it would end my despair

Only misery and expense for me

More malware from everywhere

I telephoned Bil l said I want to send it back

Only heard laughter and yak yakkity yak

All the days ahead look very black

Everything happens to me

My Windows computer it cost me a wad

Everyone said with it I would be awed

I found it to be very very flawed

Everything happens to me

In a Windows forum I aired my complaint

Told them the thing is what it ain't

Had to use a lot of restraint

Everything happens to me

Tried some antivirus to find help for me

Thought it would end my despair

Only misery and expense for me

Free Intro to Linux Course Surpasses OneMill ion Enrollments

The Linux Foundation: SAN FRANCISCO,September 22, 2020 – The Linux Foundation, thenonprofit organization enabling mass innovationthrough open source, today announced itsIntroduction to Linux training course on the edXplatform, currently in its sixth edition, has surpassedone mil l ion enrollments. The course helps studentsdevelop a good working knowledge of Linux usingboth the graphical interface and command lineacross the major Linux distribution famil ies. No priorknowledge or experience is required, making thecourse a popular first step for individuals interestedin pursuing a career in IT.

Introduction to Linux has helped countlessindividuals launch their IT careers. Jules BashiziI renge for example, completed the course thenproceeded to intermediate Essentials of SystemAdministration training and received a LinuxFoundation Certified SysAdmin (LFCS) certification, and now is a PhD candidate who has contributedover 200 patches to the Linux kernel. FabianPichardo also followed the introductory course withEssentials of System Administration and LFCS, andnow is employed full time as a software developer.

“To have introduced over a mil l ion individuals toLinux is a tremendous milestone,” said LinuxFoundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin. “One ofour primary goals is to bring more talent into theopen source community, and offering free, highquality training that is accessible to anyone whowants it is essential to achieving that goal. Thankyou and congratulations to everyone who hassupported these efforts, including our members, instructors, training support team, and the studentsthemselves. We look forward to training the nextmil l ion! ”

With Linux powering all of the world’s 500 topsupercomputers and the vast majority of mobiledevices, along with serving as the backbone of thecloud and the internet itself, it is essential tounderstand Linux to pursue many IT job roles. Uponcompletion of this course, students possess a goodworking knowledge of Linux, from both a graphicaland command line perspective, allowing them toeasily navigate through any of the major Linuxdistributions. They can then continue their progressas either a user, system administrator or developerusing the acquired skil l set.

known as a firmware bootkit, according to an articleon TechRadar. I t affects a computer’s UEFI (UnifiedExtensive Firmware Interface), and begins runningbefore the computer’s operating system or anyprograms. This means that normal operating systemand programming security software cannot detect it,since it’s loaded before anything else. I t also makesit incredibly difficult to remove.

The Kaspersky researchers found a sample of suchmalware used in a campaign that deployed variantsof a complex, multi-stage modular frameworkdubbed as MosaicRegressor. Not only does themalware load before the operating system orsecurity software, the UEFI code resides on a flashROM, separate from the hard drive. This means thateven if the end user reinstalls the operating systemand all of their software, the bootkit malware wil lpersist.

According to an article on ITP.net:

While it was not possible to detect the exact infectionvector that allowed the attackers to overwrite the originalUEFI firmware, Kaspersky researchers deduced oneoption of how it could be done based on what is knownabout VectorEDK from leaked Hacking Team documents. These suggest, without excluding other options, thatinfections might have been possible through physicalaccess to the victim’s machine, specifically with abootable USB key, which would contain a special updateutility. The patched firmware would then facilitate theinstallation of a Trojan downloader – malware thatenables any payload suitable for the attacker’s needs tobe downloaded when the operating system is up andrunning.

In the majority of cases, however, MosaicRegressorcomponents were delivered to victims using far lesssophisticated measures, such as spear phishing deliveryof a dropper hidden in an archive together with a decoyfile. The multiple modules structure of the frameworkenabled the attackers to conceal the wider frameworkfrom analysis, and deploy components to target machineson demand only. The malware initially installed on the

infected device is a Trojan-downloader, a programcapable of downloading additional payload and othermalware. Depending on the payload downloaded, themalware could download or upload arbitrary files from/toarbitrary URLs and gather information from the targetedmachine.

Kapersky researchers have not been able to link themalware to any particular threat actor, but havelinked some of the attacks to Russian spearphishingdocuments, and most of the victims had someconnection to North Korea.

Could Microsoft Be Looking To Linux For TheNext Version Of Windows?

I know … it sounds like a horror fi lm, huh? ButTechRepublic’s Jack Wallen and ZDNet’s Steven J.Vaughan-Nichols both think it might be a good idea.

I just know you’re screaming at the top of your lungsabout now.

I f you are like many Linux users, most of whom areMicrosoft “refugees” anyways, there are many, manyreasons for your skepticism and fear. For years,Microsoft professed its intense hatred of Linux. Theybragged about how they were planning to “eradicatethe cancer known as Linux” from the computingworld.

Then, almost overnight, Microsoft professed its“love” for Linux. Microsoft joined the Linux

Foundation. Linux users RAGED! The “enemy” wasmaking itself comfortable … in their OWN HOUSE!Most Linux users were afraid that it was the same ol’Microsoft up to its usual games, which involved the“triple E” threat: embrace, extend, extinguish.MICROSOFT WAS GOING TO EXTINGUISH LINUXFROM WITHIN!

Actually, there are sti l l many Linux users whohaven’t strayed far from initial assessment. Even inthe PCLinuxOS forum, we hear it fairly regularly.Ignoring for a moment Microsoft’s history of hatredtowards Linux, can such a move possibly be all bad?

We don’t have to look far to see the possiblebenefits. Back in 1999, macOS was rebased, partly,on Berkley BSD, leading to Apple joining the *nixfamily. Anyone would be hard pressed to argue withthe results of Mac OS X (we’re not talking about thecosts associated with Apple products/hardware, northe restrictive closed environment that constrainsMac OS X).

Believe it or not, Windows isn’t the flagship Microsoftproduct any longer. I t doesn’t even come close tobeing a leading income producer for Microsoft.Instead, Microsoft finds its biggest profit leaders tobe things like its cloud-based Office 365, and other“software-as-a-service” (SaaS) products. I ts Azurecloudspace is quite lucrative.

Microsoft migrating Windows to Linux does makesense. Instead of having a whole bevy ofprogrammers working on proprietary, closed-sourcesoftware, most of the heavy lifting would have beendone by the FOSS and Linux community. You can becertain that Microsoft wil l tinker with the final product. They literally can’t help themselves in that regard.

The real questions come with that tinkering. Wil l theirtinkering introduce security vulnerabil ities? Wil l aLinux-based Windows cause a dying off of someLinux distros? Will Microsoft’s embracing of Linuxmake Linux distros everywhere targets for malwareand viri i? This latter point is a HUGE potential

problem. There are many unknowns, and how thoseunknowns are handled could have hugeramifications across the established Linuxcommunity.

Jack Wallen does make a good point that could endup being quite advantageous for Linux users.Microsoft would almost be required to pour effortsinto helping support Wine, to help insure that legacyprograms/software can run atop a Linux-basedversion of Windows. Without an abil ity to run favoritelegacy software, user adoption of a Windows basedon Linux may be slow and arduous. Even todayamong Windows users, there are “laggers” whohang onto older, more vulnerable versions ofWindows because of perceived compatibi l ity issues.

Certainly, this wil l thrust Linux into the computingmainstream at light speed. Linux market share wil lsky rocket, overnight. There are many arguments onboth sides as to whether this is good or not. Somedon’t want Linux to have such a high profi le. Othersthink that it wil l hasten Linux development andimprove support across all avenues.

Color me skeptical. Very skeptical. You might evencall it “guarded optimism.” Very, very guarded. As ifpeeking between a barely perceptible gap betweenslats of a set of drawn mini-bl inds. I can see bothsides of the argument. I can see how such a movemight have huge benefit to Linux, but ONLY if it isdone correctly, in the spirit and methods of theestablished open source community, and if profit isNOT occupying the driver’s seat.

1Password Password Manager Coming To Linux

For much of the past 10 or so years, one of the mostpopular password managers for Windows, Androidand iOS has been 1Password. And, for all of thattime, the most requested “feature” has been for aLinux version.

Well , it looks like Linux users are getting their wish, and their request granted. 1Password is coming toLinux, most l ikely as soon as early 2021. From aforum post on AgileBits community forum:

A full-featured Linux desktop app has been our mostrequested feature by far and responsible for the longestforum post in our history. Today we’re thrilled toannounce that 1Password is coming to Linux!

Planned for official release later this year, we couldn’twait to share the news with you so today we’re unveilingan alpha a development preview so you can join in on thefun.

Not exactly an LTS release

This isn’t a long-term support release! You can expectmany updates and changes over the next few months asmany features are not complete yet. For example, the appis currently read only: there is no item editing, creation ofvaults, or item organization.

As such this initial release should be used for testing andvalidation purposes only and is not suitable for businesscritical environments. For a stable experience on Linuxyou’ll want to use 1Password X in your browser.

A true Linux app

Our new app is built to meet the security and performanceexpectations of Linux users. Its backend is writtencompletely in Rust, a secure systems programminglanguage that has made a lot of waves in the Linuxcommunity. We’re especially proud to be using theincredible ring crypto library to power the end-to-endencryption that keeps your data safe.

In addition to a secure foundation we’ve tailored the appto integrate with Desktop Linux with features like:

* Simple and secure installs using apt and dnf packagermanagers

Automatic Dark Mode selection based on your GTKtheme Open network locations (FTP, SSH, SMB) Tilingwindow manager support and descriptive window titlesUnlock with your Linux user account, includingbiometrics System tray icon for staying unlocked whileclosed X11 clipboard integration and clearing Keyboardshortcuts Data export Unlock multiple accounts withdifferent passwords Create collections to organize dataacross accounts and vaults

And this is just what’s available in the preview. There willbe many more exciting features that will take advantage ofthe power ofLinux as we get closer to release.

Free accounts for open source teams

Our new app is built on great open source projects likethe Rust programming language for the underlying logic, and React for a responsive component-based UI.

Building an app for Linux wouldn’t have been possiblewithout these giant shoulders to stand upon so we want togive back to the free software community. If you work onan open source team that needs a password manager,

Psssst! We Now Know The Name Of Doom Guy!

I ’m certain that this has been one of the BIGGESTmysteries in all of gaming for a very long time.

To mark the 26th anniversary of the release of Doom2 (can you believe that Doom 2 has been around for26 years?! I know I can hardly believe it! ), idSoftware co-founder John Romero finally answereda question that I ’m sure many, many before haveasked. He did so on Twitter.

Yep! So there you have it from one of the top guyshimself. Doom Guy’s name is … Doom Guy.

Here we are, 26 years later, and it would be foolishto presume that Doom is pulseless. I t remains ahugely popular game, and new Doom games arebeing prepared for the new PlayStation 5 and XboxSeries X gaming systems. On October 20, 2020, anew Doom DLC (downloadable content … I know …

I had to look that up myself) game, called “TheAncient Gods: Part One,” was released. And, usersdidn’t even have to have Doom Eternity to play it!

Now, don’t you feel better knowing that Doom Guy’sname is Doom Guy?

THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IN JACKSON,MICHIGAN IS USING ITS BUSES AS MOBILEHOTSPOTS to provide internet connectivity tostudents whose famil ies cannot afford internetaccess, according to an article on mlive. Thecoronavirus pandemic forced many schools to shutdown face-to-face learning, and switch to virtuallearning to replace it. Even though the school districthelped ensure that students had access to mobiledevices by providing Chromebooks, they found thataround 35 percent of students experiencedproblems with connectivity due to their family’sinabil ity to afford internet access. As a result, theyequipped their school buses with wifi hotspots, andsent them out into underserved areas of thecommunity from 9:30 a.m. unti l 12:45 p.m. There, famil ies would gather in the wifi coverage area (a100 foot to 300 foot radius from the mobile hotspot),to avail themselves of the free internet access.

SEVEN COUNTRIES ARE CALLING ON BIGTECH to provide them with “backdoor” access toencryption algorithms and routines (particularly end-to-end encryption), so that they “may keep the publicsafe” from threat actors (real, perceived andimaginary), and to help law enforcement to crackdown on those who hide behind internet encryptionto commit their crimes, according to an article onZDNet. Those seven countries are the U.S. , U.K. ,Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and Japan. The same (or similar) requests have been made bythe group to big tech companies in 2018 and 2019.The problem is that if a backdoor exists forgovernments and law enforcement to crackencrypted communications and/or data, then howlong wil l it be before non-government types (e.g. ,hackers) are also able to leverage those samebackdoors? How do we trust that governments andlaw enforcement wil l always follow the law, and notuse the “abil ity” to silence dissenters or those whoseopinions might not be “mainstream?” You can readthe entire joint news release from these sevencountries, here. I haven’t been to some of my favorite sites for awhile, having other events that were keeping mebusy - you know, Life. However, I happened to go toone of my favorite GIMP sites the other day - GIMPLearn. I know I can always find something new tolearn, and that day was no exception. One of themost talented people on the site, a lady namedPat625, had posted a fine tutorial a while back, and Iwas just now able to go through it. The actual tutorialis here, and it is wonderful, so I thought I ’d share itwith you.

Create a new file, 1,000 px X 1,000 px, with a whitebackground. Using the guides you can pull from theleft-side and top rulers, place them at 500 px. I f youwil l check the bar at the bottom of your window, you

wil l see “Add Guide” and it wil l show you when yourguide is at 500 px. Your canvas wil l look like this:

Create a text box and put your name in it using afancy font. Pat625’s suggestion was RothenburgDecorative or Strassburg Fraktur, and included themin her tutorial package. I used Rothenburg (it hasmore swirls), but you could use any font you’d l ike.The swirly ones make great mandalas! Dependingon how long your name is, your font size shouldprobably be between 100 and 150. Mine was 150but could have been a bit more.

When you get it on the canvas, center it in thebackground, and move it so the top of the text is justtouching the horizontal guide.

When you get it where it needs to be, right cl ick thetext layer in the layer dialog and choose “DiscardText Information” since we now need this to just be alayer. Right cl ick again and choose “Layer to ImageSize”.

Now we’l l use this layer to make our mandala.Choosing the text layer, duplicate it by clicking onDuplicate Layer in the Layers dialog. With theduplicate chosen, cl ick on the rotate tool (GIMP2.10.22 groups the tools, so it may be in thetransform group depending on your version. ) Putyour cursor in the middle of your layer and rotate it180o. I t wil l look like this now (next page, top left):

Now, right cl ick the top layer and choose “MergeDown”. NOTE - Keep the text layers separate fromthe background (don’t merge all the way down.)Duplicate the text layer, then rotate the duplicate 90o

(next page, center, left).

PCLinuxOS Magazine Page 22

Now, merge that layer down, then duplicate it again. This time, rotate the new duplicated layer 45o. Youshould end up with something that looks like this:

Now we can give it a l ittle flair. In Pat625‘s tutorial, she had drawn two circles around her mandala. I tlooks really neat, so let’s do it. Choose your ell ipsetool and in the toolbox, tick the boxes for “Expandfrom center” and “Fixed aspect ratio” so we canmake the circle perfectly round. Starting in thecenter, make the circle large enough for the text tobe just inside. We want an actual circle there, sobefore you do anything else, choose Edit > StrokeSelection . Make sure your foreground color is black, then make your stroke 12 px.

Before you do anything else, cl ick Select > None. That wil l deselect the ell ipse you just used. Repeatyour circle again, using the ell ipse tool, making thisone inside the first. When you do Edit > StrokeSelection this time, make it 4 or 5 px. Merge downunti l you have the drawing on the top layer, and thebackground on the bottom layer. Remember to saveyour work.

I t already looks pretty neat! You can stop now, export it in the format of your choice, and let a childor grandchild color it if you wish. However, we canalso add some color to it before we’re finished.

Right cl ick on the top layer and choose Alpha ToSelection . You wil l see the “walking ants”everywhere you have any black. Make the blacklayer invisible so you can see the result (next page, top left).

Add a new layer on top of the other two. Now, clickon the Gradients tool, choose Radial gradient, andwhichever gradient you want. Starting from thecenter, cl ick and drag your mouse towards the

outside. Remember, any time you don’t l ike theresult, you can always press CTRL + Z to undo itand try again. I chose the Caribbean Blues gradient, and I think I had to reverse it. In the mandala at thefirst of the article, I used the Sunrise gradient.

Again, you can stop here and export, but I ’ l l showyou a couple more things you can do. One thing youcan do is to emphasize the colors of your mandala.I f your selection is sti l l active (we did Alpha toSelection earl ier), create a new layer under the toplayer. Choose Edit > Stroke Selection again. Usearound 5 px for your stroke, and make it black. I f youwant more black, make it 6 or 7 px.

Another one is to bucket fi l l the background layerwith color. That’s easy. Just choose the backgroundlayer, choose the bucket fi l l tool and a color youwant, and click.

Another thing you can do, if you don’t want to fi l l thebackground with color, is to add shadows instead.Choose your mandala layer (the color layer) and goto Filters > Light & Shadow > Drop Shadow.Change your shadow, blur radius and opacity towhatever looks good to you.

The first time I did this tutorial, the result was the firstimage below. The second image below (next page, top left) is the second try.

Background & History

Twenty years ago, in 2000, the OpenOffice (OO.org) source code was opensourced by Sun Microsystems. I remember it well . Back then, in my naivete as aWindows user, I was excited about the announcement. I t wasn’t as a contributoror programmer, but I was excited about the growth potential for an office suiteother than Microsoft Office, which has/had always been consistently priced out ofmy reach or budget.

In those days, OpenOffice was managed and developed by Sun Microsystems. This was after Sun purchased StarOffice from its German owners in 1999. Priorto that, StarOffice originated as StarWriter in 1985.

THEN came along Microsoft’s introduction of the OOXML (Office Open XML)document format, which especially created havoc for users of anything other thanMicrosoft Office. We see them today, represented with the famil iar *.docx, *.xlsxand *.pptx fi le extensions. For quite a while, OO.org users were stymied in theirattempts to open, read, or edit OOXML documents. Kludgy extensions andworkarounds were presented (from what I remember), but none of them “cured”the problem. Plus, Oracle was incredibly slow to address the issues andconcerns over the lack of OO.org users to be able to read these new officedocument fi le formats.

I remember having to ask users of MS Office (at that time) to PLEASE send meany Office fi les in the older *.doc/*.xls/*.ppt formats, just to ensure that I would beable to open, read, and possibly edit those fi les. For a fi le format that waspresented as a unifying force for office documents, it sure seemed to create aLOT of havoc for users of anything that was not Microsoft created or blessed.

First Sun’s, and then Oracle’s (after Oracle purchased Sun Microsystems in2010) slowness to respond to not just those issues, but also its slow developmentcycle contributed to OO.org becoming forked into The Document Foundation(TDF), who gave birth to LibreOffice (LO). LO was based on the OO.org sourcecode, with many, many enhancements and new features. This all happened in2010. In the intervening 10 years, LO has seen phenomenal growth, while Oraclesold OO.org to Apache in 2011, and there it has sat, stagnating for most of thattime.

The Document Foundation’s Plea

On October 12, 2020, The Document Foundation released an open letter toApache OpenOffice. Here it is, in its entirity:

Today marks 20 years since the source code to OpenOffice was released. And today wesay: LibreOffice is the future of OpenOffice. Let’s all get behind it!

It’s great to have a rich and diverse set of free and open source software projects.Hundreds of millions of people around the world have benefited from the choice andcustomisation that they bring. But sometimes, users can lose out when they’re not awareof newer alternatives, or when one brand overshadows another.

OpenOffice(.org) – the “father project” of LibreOffice – was a great office suite, andchanged the world. It has a fascinating history, but since 2014, Apache OpenOffice (itscurrent home) hasn’t had a single major release. That’s right – no significant newfeatures or major updates have arrived in over six years. Very few minor releases havebeen made, and there have been issues with timely security updates too.

In recent years, almost all development activity has taken place in LibreOffice, with 13major releases and 87 minor releases. In 2019, LibreOffice had over 15,000 codecommits, while OpenOffice had only 595. LibreOffice has a flourishing community, yearly

conferences, professional support options, development and migration certification, and arobust commercial ecosystem.

In addition, LibreOffice has integrated many features essential for end users in 2020:

* Export in Microsoft Office OOXML formats (.docx, .xlsx etc. )* ODF, OOXML and PDF signing for improved security* Major performance improvements in Calc, the spreadsheet* A fresh new NotebookBar user interface* …and a lot more

But still, many users don’t know that LibreOffice exists. The OpenOffice brand is still sostrong, even though the software hasn’t had a significant release for over six years, and isbarely being developed or supported.

If Apache OpenOffice still wants to maintain its old 4.1 branch from 2014, sure, that’simportant for legacy users. But the most responsible thing to do in 2020 is: help newusers. Make them aware that there’s a much more modern, up-to-date, professionallysupported suite, based on OpenOffice, with many extra features that people need.

We appeal to Apache OpenOffice to do the right thing. Our goal should be to getpowerful, up-to-date and well-maintained productivity tools into the hands of as manypeople as possible. Let’s work together on that!

Signed,

The Board of Directors at The Document Foundation

Of course, this isn’t the first time that TDF has urged Apache OpenOffice to worktogether. Here is a similar “message” to Apache OO.org to do something similarback in August, 2015. Feel free to read it at your leisure by following the link. Themessage from TDF is quite consistent, and has been over the years.

Analysis

I ’ve heard some good arguments from both sides of the issue. The usercomments on the TDF website with the open letter to Apache are very insightfuland tell ing. TDF makes a strong case – and always has – about letting users whogo looking at the Apache OpenOffice website know that something moreadvanced, more developed and more capable exists with LO. They also make agood case that Apache’s lack of continued development, while presenting theApache OpenOffice 4.1 as current, tarnishes the reputation of not only other opensource office suites, but also for open source software as a whole.

Meanwhile, others claim that it’s good to have choices. But, what choices arethere if the code is not maintained, development is slower than snails trying tocircumnavigate the Earth, security issues continue to be ignored, and thesoftware resembles abandonware? Even today, virtually all Linux distributions –PCLinuxOS included – support and include LO as the default office productivitysuite. For a real “slap in the face,” even Oracle Linux 6 features LO, instead ofOO.org, as its included office productivity suite. And, even setting all of that aside, there are other choices besides Apache OO.org. Ten years later, we have GoogleDocs, Microsoft Office 365, and Zoho Office Suite, al l cloud-based office suitechoices that weren’t as widely available when TDF forked from the OracleOO.org project.

I think it should be pretty evident, from the 10 years of relative inaction on OO.orgby Apache, that their true focus is on their server software market. I t’s sad andunfortunate that users are ultimately the ones that are hurt in this split. Thecomments to the TDF open letter between Mike Saunders (from the LO project)and Peter Kovacs (from the OO.org project) i l lustrate perfectly the rift thatremains between the OO.org and LO developers. You’l l have to scroll down toread them, but they are not too far down. The exchange starts with the 14thcomment in the comment thread.

Indeed, it would seem that Apache OO.org is making itself more and moreirrelevant the longer they go on without any significant updates. Because it camefirst and has been around longer, many more people know about it than they doLO. Shockingly, despite having over 200 million estimated users, there are sti l l alot of people who don’t even know that LO exists, even if they know that OO.orgexists.

The last “update” of Apache OO.org (4.1.7) came over a year ago! However, it ispresented on the Apache OO.org website as though it is a current release. Well,in a way, I guess it IS the most current release, even if it isn’t al l that current. I ’mbetting most who download it won’t even realize that the “current release” is overa year old. The last “review” of Apache OO.org occurred over THREE years ago.

To contrast, LO is currently in it’s 7.0 version, most recently updated at thebeginning of October, 2020.

The LO development cycle has been robust, swift and dynamic. Security issuesare dealt with quickly. Overall , LO is much more responsive to its user base. LOmakes the perfect choice for a free, open source office productivity suite. ApacheOO.org … probably not so much, any more. OO.org has its place firmlycemented in the pages of the history books. I ts time has come and gone. But,due to mismanagement and mostly inactive development, OO.org has beenreplaced with the new kid on the block, who is hungry and eager.

I t has been nice knowing you OO.org. Your contribution to making officeproductivity suites available to the masses, for free, wil l not be forgotten. But, it’stime to help ensure that everyone who looks at your software is aware that thereis another office productivity suite available that is undergoing much more robustdevelopment, with many more features and enhancements, originating from thevery same code base. To do otherwise is to be deceiving, the same as lying byomission. You sully the reputation of reputable open source projects across theworld by continuing your deceitful ways.

I f you, Apache, want to continue to keep and produce OO.org as a separateproduct, please do. But also let everyone know about the much more capableLO. You should be able to do at least THAT LEVEL of cooperation between twosimilar and related open source projects, if nothing else.

The weather in Denmark has changed a lot in thelast 20 years, as has the rest of the weather in therest of the world. We have just had 10 days with 31-32°C (87.8-89.6°F) degree heat. That is a lot inDenmark, when the average daytime temperature is18.4°C (65°F) in August.

When I met my wife, it was not her cup of tea. Sosail ing was put on the shelf for 26 years. In 2012, Isailed with an old sail ing ship from 1854, whereeverything went as in 1854, and there was also anengine on board.

I t was a nice ship, but I could not handle it with myback, so I had to give up. You can see the ship here:http: //www.sluppenruth.dk/.

In 2015, I started teaching students how to learn tosail with a sailboat in Korsør sail ing club. I did thatfor four seasons, but had to stop because I got aballoon dilation in my heart. So now, I only teachtheory for sailboats.

I have just started sail ing with my daughter in asail ing club in central Zealand on a lake, on a smallboat type called LYNAES 14(https: //sailboatdata.com/sailboat/lynaes-14?units=imperial). And here I plan to sail unti l theday I no longer can sail . Hopefully for another 10-12years yet.

Why and when did you start using Linux? My interest in Linux started in 1998. There was anarticle in a Danish newspaper.

I t sounded interesting, but I forgot about it unti l therewas a CD with Red Hat 5.2 in a Danish IT magazinein February 1999.

I used Windows 95 at that time. I got a larger harddrive in my old Olivetti computer, and installed it as adual boot with Windows 95. I was immediately sold.

In March 1999, I deleted Windows, and installedopenSUSE 6.0. I have only used Linux since. Whydid I switch to Linux? What interested me was that itwas free and open, and you could do whatever youwanted with it. I have tried further 14 otherdistributions down the road.

The fact that PCLinuxOS is a roll ing release is a bigplus. PCLinuxOS is rock solid stable, with tons ofpackages available in the repos. I f you want a solid, stable, dependable Linux operating system, thenyou cannot go wrong with this distro. The forums arefull of helpful members that wil l help with all sorts ofissues. This is the way Linux should be. I t is thedistro for me, and here I intend to stay.

What specific equipment do you currently usewith PCLinuxOS?My desktop is an Intel Core i7-9700 4.7GHz 8-CoreCPU. My laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad L540Processor: 2.6 GHz, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4300MCPU @ 2.60GHz.

My wife and daughter have a Lenovo ThinkPadT400 IntelCore2Duo processor P8400 (2.26GHz), 3-MBL2 cache. All computers with PCLinuxOS MATE,so we call ourselves the Linux family.

Do you feel that your use of Linux influences thereactions you receive from your computer peersor family? If so, how?As I said, we all three use Linux. The rest of myfamily and my wife's family are not interested inLinux. I think they're a little scared to switch to Linux, because they wil l have to learn something new. Ionly have one nephew, whom I helped install MATE,and he is happy with it.

What would you like to see happen withinPCLinuxOS that would make it a better place. What are your feelings?I wish there were more people who would usePCLinuxOS. I do my best to spread the word. I havemade a website about PCLinuxOS.(http: //bluemarlin.dk/) Unfortunately, it’s only inDanish, but maybe over time, it could be translatedinto English. But right now, I have too many projectsto handle.
