The Salvation Army collects donations to cover the cost of buy- ing toys, coats, and groceries for those in need. They’re a part of a tradition dating back to 1891. Though the red kettles have changed from iron to lighter-weight metal to plastic, the goal of helping the poor hasn’t. In 1891, Salvation army Cap- tain Joeseph McFee was upset that he saw so many individuals in his city of San Francisco in poverty that weren’t able to afford basic needs like food and clothing. He thought that a Christmas meal for the struggling individuals would be a way to help them. The only problem was, he wasn’t sure how to fund the project. He had a goal of feeding about 1,000 of the city’s poorest people on Christmas Day. As he thought about how to raise the money, he thought about his days in Liver- pool. He remember how at Stage Landing where the boats came in, there was a large iron kettle into which passers-by would toss a change to help the poor. Soon after he thought of it, he placed a similar pot at the Oak- land Ferry Landing in San Fran- cisco with a sign that said “keep the pot boiling.” He raised the money to feed the 1,000 people before Christ- mas. Six year later, the kettle idea spread from the west to the east. That year, there were over 1,500 Christmas dinners provided to people in poverty across the nation due the kettle idea. Today, the Salvation Army assists more than 4.5 million people during Thanksgiving and Christmas time. Joseph McFee’s kettle idea started a tradition that has spread across the United States and throughout the world. There are now kettles used in Japan, Korea, and many European countries to name a few. The Salvation Army continues its mission today to help people in need around the world. The Salvation Army doesn’t just do Christmas dinners. Some of the things they offer to people in need include toys for needy children, food for the family, clothing, and small practical gifts for shut-ins. Throughout the year, that same local Salvation Army provides specific programs to aid the poor and needy such as food, emer- gency and transitional shelter, job training, financial assistance, day care and after school care, youth recreation and development pro- grams. Local Salvation Army units raise funds to support their local services. There is no national fund raising in The Salvation Army, so funds raised in each commu- nity are dedicated to best serve the people in that community. In our case, 88% of the funds stay in Ransom County. To become a part of this mis- sion and to help those in need, contact Trinity Lutheran Church. BELL RINGERS... CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE Neil Olerud. The county is responsible for only 20% of the total project cost for these projects that are com- pleted using federal aid. Mayfield stated that he hadn’t heard anything yet from the Corps of Engineers yet about the Sheldon Bridge project, and said if they didn’t hear anything by the spring it would probably be time to look at something else. Road Grader Bids Road grader bids were sched- uled to be opened at 10:30 a.m. at the meeting, and the two compa- nies that bid (RDO and CAT) had representativeness at the meeting. The bid specs required bids for a five-year lease for a new road grader and outright purchase to be paid over two years. Both were bid correctly, so County Road Superintendent Jeff Hopkins will inspect them further so that the county can award the bid at the next regular commis- sioners meeting. Delinquent tax sales There were a few properties that the county had opened up for sale due to delinquent taxes. No one came to the courthouse to bid on the properties and pay the required back taxes/specials on the properties, so the county has kept ownership of the properties. It was noted that one of the properties may still have some- one occupying the home, so com- missioners discussed options that the county had for eviction with the state’s attorney. Sheriff’s Office The commissioners greeted Sheriff Benneweis and welcomed him home, as he had been on tour in Afghanistan and had just returned home on the 15th of November. Benneweis had one main issue to bring up, saying that he’d like to change the scheduling so that no more overtime was paid. He’d like to see “cover shifts” for offi- cers who were going to be gone for at a certain time, instead of officers that were working just working longer to cover the shifts. The idea will be discussed fur- ther and the commissioners will let Benneweis know. Before he left, Benneweis pre- sented the county with a display that included an American flag that was flown in Afghanistan to hang up in the courthouse as a sign of appreciation for the sup- port that he had received while on tour. Miscellaneous The board discussed a few miscellaneous items. Auditor Nicole Gentzkow sug- gested that a sign be put up on the west entry door explaining that the door was now an employee entrance only to help clarify it for those who might think that the courthouse was closed. Gentzkow also told the board the copy machine was not work- ing correctly and among other things, it was leaving ink stains on copies, something that was not acceptable on legal documents. She stated a new company was offering a copy machine on lease for $125 per month with a five-year lease, in which the com- pany would replace the machine if anything went wrong with it in that time frame. The commissioners agreed that it was a good deal, as with the current machine they are pay- ing about $200-$400 every other month for ink. Hansen made a motion to move forward with the new machine and it was seconded by Steve Dick. Having no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned. COMMISSIONERS... Goat Game, Dec. 15, 2:30-6:00The Christmas Kettle/Red

Kettle is The Salvation Army’s most famous street campaign, where locals stand in the cold and ring bells to raise money.

The Salvation Army collects donations to cover the cost of buy-ing toys, coats, and groceries for

those in need. They’re a part of a tradition

dating back to 1891. Though the red kettles have changed from iron to lighter-weight metal to plastic, the goal of helping the poor hasn’t.

In 1891, Salvation army Cap-tain Joeseph McFee was upset that he saw so many individuals in his city of San Francisco in poverty that weren’t able to afford basic needs like food and clothing. He thought that a Christmas meal for the struggling individuals would be a way to help them. The only problem was, he wasn’t sure how to fund the project.

He had a goal of feeding about 1,000 of the city’s poorest people on Christmas Day. As he thought about how to raise the money, he thought about his days in Liver-pool. He remember how at Stage Landing where the boats came in, there was a large iron kettle into which passers-by would toss a

change to help the poor. Soon after he thought of it, he

placed a similar pot at the Oak-land Ferry Landing in San Fran-cisco with a sign that said “keep the pot boiling.”

He raised the money to feed the 1,000 people before Christ-mas.

The Salvation Army doesn’t

just do Christmas dinners. Some of the things they offer to people in need include toys for needy children, food for the family, clothing, and small practical gifts for shut-ins.

Throughout the year, that same local Salvation Army provides specific programs to aid the poor and needy such as food, emer-gency and transitional shelter, job training, financial assistance, day care and after school care, youth recreation and development pro-grams.

Local Salvation Army units raise funds to support their local services. There is no national fund raising in The Salvation Army, so funds raised in each commu-nity are dedicated to best serve the people in that community. In our case, 88% of the funds stay in Ransom County.

To become a part of this mis-sion and to help those in need, contact Trinity Lutheran Church.

Neil Olerud. The county is responsible for

only 20% of the total project cost for these projects that are com-pleted using federal aid.

Mayfield stated that he hadn’t heard anything yet from the Corps of Engineers yet about the Sheldon Bridge project, and said if they didn’t hear anything by the spring it would probably be time to look at something else.

Road Grader BidsRoad grader bids were sched-

uled to be opened at 10:30 a.m. at the meeting, and the two compa-nies that bid (RDO and CAT) had representativeness at the meeting.

The bid specs required bids for a five-year lease for a new road grader and outright purchase to be paid over two years.

Both were bid correctly, so County Road Superintendent Jeff Hopkins will inspect them further so that the county can award the bid at the next regular commis-sioners meeting.

Delinquent tax salesThere were a few properties

that the county had opened up for sale due to delinquent taxes. No one came to the courthouse to bid on the properties and pay the required back taxes/specials on the properties, so the county has kept ownership of the properties.

It was noted that one of the properties may still have some-one occupying the home, so com-

missioners discussed options that the county had for eviction with the state’s attorney.

Sheriff’s OfficeThe commissioners greeted

Sheriff Benneweis and welcomed him home, as he had been on tour in Afghanistan and had just returned home on the 15th of November.

Benneweis had one main issue to bring up, saying that he’d like to change the scheduling so that no more overtime was paid. He’d like to see “cover shifts” for offi-cers who were going to be gone for at a certain time, instead of officers that were working just working longer to cover the shifts.

The idea will be discussed fur-ther and the commissioners will let Benneweis know.

Before he left, Benneweis pre-sented the county with a display that included an American flag that was flown in Afghanistan to hang up in the courthouse as a sign of appreciation for the sup-port that he had received while on tour.

MiscellaneousThe board discussed a few

miscellaneous items. Auditor Nicole Gentzkow sug-

gested that a sign be put up on the west entry door explaining that the door was now an employee entrance only to help clarify it for those who might think that the

courthouse was closed. Gentzkow also told the board

the copy machine was not work-ing correctly and among other things, it was leaving ink stains on copies, something that was not acceptable on legal documents.

She stated a new company was offering a copy machine on lease for $125 per month with a five-year lease, in which the com-pany would replace the machine

if anything went wrong with it in that time frame.

The commissioners agreed that it was a good deal, as with the current machine they are pay-ing about $200-$400 every other month for ink. Hansen made a motion to move forward with the new machine and it was seconded by Steve Dick. Having no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned.
