Who's eligible to join the pool?

Anyone and everyone (members of participating NCAA programs might want to consider carefully, though ;-)).

What are the requirements?

The only requirements are that the $10 entry fee is paid before the round of 16 games have begun, and that the pertinent entry information is received before the start of the tournament. The pertinent entry information would include:

- Real name - Preferred nickname (I am the Mighty Mobelfakta, so that name's taken already). - Prediction for the total combined score of the championship game (for tie-breaking purposes). - Predicted winners of all 63 tournament games.

How are the points scored?

2 points for each 1st round win 3 points for each 2nd round win 4 points for each 3rd round win 6 points for each 4th round win 8 points for each 5th round win 12 points for correctly picking the NCAA Champion

There is no weighting for "upsets".

How is the prize money distributed?

Last year with 36 entries, there was a first, second, third, and fourth place prize. The $360.00 pot was split as follows: 1st-$180.00, 2nd-$90.00, 3rd-$60.00, and 4th-$30.00. This year the money will be split with roughly the same proportions going to the winners.

The Rules

What if there's a tie?

The participant whose prediction comes closest (higher or lower) for the final combined score of the championship game will win the tie-breaker. If there is STILL a tie, the money will be split. For instance, if there is a tie for first place, the winners will split the combined prize money for first and second place. FYI, in six years of running this pool, there has only been one tie for prize money.

Can I enter more than once?

You certainly can. Statistically, your chances of winning would double. However, so far of the four people (eight entries) that have tried their luck with two entries, only one has taken home any prize money. Go figure.

How to Enter


1. The most convenient method of entry for those with internet access would be the web entry form which can be accessed here. Otherwise, get thee a copy of the NCAA Men's Tournament Bracket. The most convenient place to get one would be the sports section of your local newspaper. You can also get the brackets at various sports related web sites (ESPN, FinalFour.net, CBS Sportsline, etc.). If you are planning to enter online via this web site, skip to step 6 below.

2. Fill out the brackets completely using all the college basketball wisdom you can conjure up.

3. Make a prediction for the total combined score for the championship game. For instance, if you think the final score will be 82-76, your prediction would be 158.

4. Create a nickname for yourself. This is important, because if you don't give us one, we'll make one up for you. Historically, these assigned nicknames have not been flattering.

5. Send all that precious information this-away before the first game on Thursday, March 15. Obviously, the fastest way to get the info here is by e-mail ([email protected] and [email protected]). However, you can also send it via snail mail, so long as it is post marked by March 14th. Those going the e-mail route will have to manually type in all your picks. The most efficient way of completing this tedious task is to send in your picks as follows:

Sunday, March 11, 2001 http://www.HWCI.com/ncaa Issue # 1.0.1 "The Field of 65?..." 2001 HWCI NCAA TOURNAMENT POOL ============================== ILLINOIS JOINS LAST YEARS #1 SEEDS WHILE UCLA PAYS FOR LOSS ON SATURDAY How to deal with the insertion of a new 65th team LA MIRADA, CA (smt)- Two Big 10 teams (Michigan St. and Illinois), despite losing in the Big 10 tournament quarter- and semifinals, took #1 seeds today. Illinois took one of the #1 seeds joining Stanford, Duke, and Michigan St., all #1 seeds last year. UCLA, upset on Saturday by the worst team in the Pac-10 (Washington), got a #4 seed but gets to play Hofstra, winners of 18 straight, and are in the same regional bracket as Duke. USC got a #6-E seed while UC-Irvine, as expected was left out of the tournament. And I found out today that there's a 65th team in the tourney. I thought it was a typo until I saw a bracket in today's paper. So Winthrop gets the distinction as the first 65th team in NCAA history. They'll play Northwestern St. and could pick up the first-ever victory for their conference (Big South)- since usually they'd be playing a #1 or 2 seed for their first game. This game will take place Tuesday in Dayton with the winner taking the #16-MW seed and playing Illinois. Despite this new wrinkle, you won't have to worry about it. The pool will essentially consider this game null (you won't pick it). You'll still pick the teams as usual and the deadline to enter will still be early Thursday morning. We figure everyone will pick #1-MW Illinois to beat the Winthrop-NW State winner, but if you're daring, you can wait til after Tuesday's game to pick the Opening Game winner to upset Illinois. So now we present the 7th Annual HWCI NCAA Tournament Pool. Six years, six different pool champions. Last year, like the year before, saw 36 entries battle for the $180 top prize. Ten people correctly picked Michigan St. to win in a wild tournament that saw nearly all the favorites win the first round and then a bunch of upsets in the second round. Will Michigan St. repeat? NW STATE WINS RIGHT TO LOSE TO ILLINOIS But we don't care about that game; Entries are due 9 AM Thurs.

LA MIRADA/EL SEGUNDO, CA (smt)- For the first time, the 64th and 65th teams played in the Opening Game and #64 Northwestern State defeating #65 Winthrop, 71-67, in Dayton, OH. They will face #1MW-Illinois. The "real" tournament begins Thursday morning with the first of sixteen games for the day. Was this game important? No less than 30 minutes after the game ended, none of the 4(!) sports radio stations talked about the game or the tourney. The game was just a blip on the screen. The real excitement begins tomorrow.

So, in less than 24 hours, we'll get thrills, upsets, and horrible CBS coverage. Luckily, their Sportsline.com site is much better with multiple ways to get the latest scores. You can get it via normal HTML, Java, Shockwave, follow one game exclusively, listen on RealAudio, get instant updates on all games at once, etc. Hopefully, their servers won't crash tomorrow!

TOP SEEDS FEEL THE PRESSURE WHILE DUKE AND STANFORD CRUISE

Despite 7 "upsets", Lil PQ leads pack with 28 points

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)- Where do you start? Whereas #15E-Holy Cross, #14W-George Mason, and #14E-Southern Utah came oh, so close to netting the huge upsets, #15W-Hampton, #13W-Kent St., and #12E-Utah St. did knock off their higher seeded foes. In addition, #11W-Georgia St., #10W-Georgetown, and both #9 seeds won. #1E-Duke, #1W-Stanford, #5W-Cincy, and #6E-USC won in blowouts while #4E-UCLA and #7E-Iowa pulled away late.

All in all, 9 of the 16 games were decided by four or less points and one additional game went to overtime. There was a buzzer beater win by Georgetown with almost no buzzer! The buzzer broke at halftime but was fixed late in the second half. The refs still had to review the play on TV, though (it counted). #8E-Georgia rallied from 11 down with less four minutes to go before losing to #9E-Missouri. In fact, the "Georg"'s went 2-3 today (Win-Georgia St, Georgetown; Loss-Georgia, #8W-Georgia Tech, George Mason). #2W-Iowa St. becomes just the fourth #2 seed to be knocked off in the first round since the 64 (er, now 65) team tournament began in 1985. The mighty Big 10 conference teams went 1-3 (all higher seeds).

I didn't watch one smidgin of live basketball on TV but did listen to several games and followed the scores on the internet. Tomorrow I should get my fill of TV games.

Well, I guess the stock market downturn has turned people to try to win money by gambling (wait, playing the stocks is gambling... sorry) as we have a received a record 59 entries. This is still unofficial and the sooner we receive payments



from all involved, the more concrete the entries will be. With 59 people, we are looking at a $590 pot and a $275 first-place prize. We'll have everything finalized by next week. LIL PQ and ZERV THE GREEK lead the pack with 28 and 26 points (14 and 13 correct) while UCLA SUCKS! (to every die hard Bruin fan's delight) sits in the cellar with 14 points (tying a record for worst 1st day performance). But things can change quickly. DECEMBER (17th-T, 20 pt) will need some big help as two of her Final Four teams have been eliminated (Ohio St., Indiana). There are 37 entries with 20 or 22 points. Whereas last year 29 of 36 had 26 or more points on the first day, this year only 2 of 59 did.

GONZAGA SCORES THIRD STRAIGHT FIRST ROUND UPSET Pool starting to spread out with two tied for first

ROSEMEAD/LA MIRADA, CA (smt)- Like the past two years, #12S-Gonzaga beat their higher-seed foe to start the run of upsets. #7MW-Wake Forest scored 53 2nd half points but unfortunately they only scored 10 1st half points and got blown out by #10MW-Butler. #11S-Temple easily handled #6S-Texas. While Gonzaga won late due to their offensive rebounds, #9MW- Charlotte won cause #8MW-Tennessee couldn’t rebound. #13S- Indiana St. provided the biggest upset in overtime over #4S- Oklahoma in an injury-filled game. The second half of the day saw all the top seeds win except for #9S-Fresno St (against an uninspired #8S-Cal team). #1MW-Illinois, #1S-Michigan St., #2MW-Arizona, and #2S-UNC pulled out easy wins while #3MW-Ole Miss squeaked by. #4Mw-Kansas, #5MW-Syracuse, #6MW-Notre Dame, and #7S-Penn St. picked up the other victories.

The first round saw 13 “upsets” whereas last year there were only three. Every seed is represented except for a #14 (although Iona, Southern Utah, and George Mason came very close) and #16. Missed free throws have kept most the games interesting ‘til the last play.

In the pool, LIL Q (1st-T, 50) went just 11-5 but still is tied for first with NICKNAME (1st-T, 50), who got 13 correct for the day. PEEPS (59th, 32) now holds last place. Three people (CORNDOG, MAGSTER’S HAMPSTERS, and DYLAN) actually picked Indiana St.’s win. Kansas’ win gave Scott T. (aka, THE FABONE 7 and FREE FABONE) 1,001 points in his career (10 entries). This year, every game except Hampton’s win was picked by at least three people, despite all the upsets. Virginia’s and Oklahoma’s loss hampered seven people’s Final Four bracket.

STANFORD GETS SCARE WHILE BC BAFFLES EVERYONE Kim creates 3-way tie for first

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)- The local teams played just good enough to win. Despite 27 turnovers, #6E-USC managed to squeak by #3E-Boston College thanks to a boneheaded play to end the game. Down by three with 7 seconds left, BC went down the court for a layup instead of the game-tying 3-pointer- time ran out, they actually missed the layup, and the BC coach even defended the play- I’m still puzzled. #12E-Utah St. missed 21 straight shots in the first half but only found themselves down by 11 before #4E-UCLA took control late in the second half. #9W-St. Joseph’s Marvin O’Conner’s 37 points weren’t enough to overcome #1W-Stanford, who picked up their 30th victory and avoided a second-round loss for the third year in a row. #5W-Cincinnati, meanwhile, broke a 4-year losing streak in the 2nd round with an easy win over #13W-Kent St. #10W-Georgetown advanced by beating giant- killer #15W-Hampton. #1E-Duke, #2E-Kentucky, and #3W-Maryland rolled to easy victories.

All in all, only one of 8 games was decided by six points or less and only USC beat a lower-seeded opponent. The Pac-10 went 3-0 for the day (Arizona could make it 4-0 in the second round tomorrow) and a once small possibility- USC vs UCLA is one game away. UCLA would have to get past Duke first, though. BC, which many thought should have been a #2 seed, barely got past #14E-Southern Utah and lost to a USC team that committed 27 turnovers and had two of their top players fouled out.

KIM (1st-Tied, 65 pts) was one of three people to get 7 of 8 correct to go into a tie for first with LIL PQ and NICKNAME. CALROCKS (11th, 61) went 7 of 8 to go from tied for 33rd to tied for 11th. CORNDOG (58th, 46) and



DARA (59th, 44) got just 2 of 8 to sink to the bottom of the pack. The race is still wide open and we’ll see on Sunday night who’s still in the running for money spots. Things don’t look good for UTHPOPE (18th-T, 59) and DECEMBER (28th-T, 57) who have two of their Final Four teams out but stranger things have happened.

TOP FOUR SEEDS IN MIDWEST SURVIVE "UPSETTING" TOURNAMENT

Last year's pool champion is one of six entries eliminated

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)- #11S-Temple's stifling matchup zone defense shut down high-scoring #3S-Florida to its lowest scoring game in five years to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Temple will play #7S-Penn St. who outhustled and outstole (18 to 5) #2S-North Carolina en route to a 82-74 victory. #12S-Gonzaga reached the Sweet Sixteen for the third straight year by closing out #13S-Indiana St. on a 25-8 run after being tied at 60. #1S-Michigan St. remained the region's only top seed after taking care of #9S-Fresno St. The Midwest brackets saw its top four teams (#1MW-Illinois, #2MW-Arizona, #3MW-Ole Miss, #4MW- Kansas) advance with Mississippi's win sealed when #6MW-Notre Dame's game-winning 3-point attempt was blocked.

All four #1 seeds are still alive while only 2 of 4 #2 seeds are in the Sweet Sixteen. Arizona's win gave the Pac-10 four teams in the Sweet Sixteen. With UNC and Florida losing, only Michigan St. remains of last year's Final Four (Wisconsin lost in the 1st Round).

The top three remain the same with KIM, LIL PQ, and NICKNAME all with 80 points. The 80 points is the smallest first-place total after two rounds in HWCI NCAA pool history. KIM, however, has a possible 160 points, and thus, the upper hand. Twenty-six others are within ten points of the lead. Three people picked Penn St. stunning upset (FREE SPLASHER, NICKNAME, DECEMBER) while three others correctly chose Temple (UCLA SUCKS!,



CORNDOG, NICKNAME). Despite picking both upsets, NICKNAME went just 5-3. KIM and HE HATE ME TOO (6th-T, 78 pts) both went 12-4 for the second round. CORNDOG (57th, 58) had a 6-10 second round and is one of six entries mathematically eliminated from any money spots. A whopping 56 entries still remain in prize contention with 39 still with an eye for first place. Last year's HWCI NCAA Pool champion, Sam N. (B-S FC), and fourth-place finisher, Craig E., (HWN KINE)) were two of the six eliminated. UNC was picked by two people to win it all and Florida by one- and all three people still have a slight chance to win at least fourth place. DYLAN (53rd-T, 62) has three of his Final Four teams out but still has a small chance to win 1st place while ARMIN TAMZARIAN (22nd-T, 71) has all seven of her Elite 8 teams (and all 4 Final Four teams) alive and can't win higher than 2nd place. That's how wacky the pool has been this year.

21 NEWCOMERS PART OF RECORD 59 ENTRIES FOR HWCI NCAA POOL

Your nicknames plus the who's who of the pool

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)- A record 59 entries entered the 7th Annual HWCI NCAA Tournament Pool, topping the mark of 36 in the past two years. Fifty-three (53) different people submitted the 59 entries in hopes of winning a share of the largest pot to date: $590. Of the 53 people, 21 are newcomers. The 59 entries are more than 1/3 the previous six years combined (153). Thirteen people will be making at least their fourth appearance in the pool. Four people this year have at least twice (Robinson C. three times) in hopes of increasing their odds.

While usually the names and nicknames are revealed before the weekend of the Final Four, this year I'm publishing the list due to the many requests I've had so far- such as "When are we going to find out who is "UCLA Sucks!" so we can beat him/her up?". As for the nicknames, one should note that it is nick-NAME, not nick-phrase or nick-sentence or nick-dissertation. We will have to limit the number of characters you can have in your name- and no, combining a sentence with no spaces (such as "mymommyboughtmyaccord") just makes it harder to read! As final arbiters, we had free reign to change and slightly modify nicknames to make it easier for us- some we asked and some we didn't. For bookkeeping purposes, I've added "Free" to the nicknames of people who were able to get five referrals (i.e., "Free Bix Pix", "Free Fabone", and "Free Splasher").

"Nickname" is indeed a nickname from the wisest guy I know. "Jaybian V" is so named cause this is his sixth year in



the pool (huh?). "UCLA Sucks!" was originally "Pac10RulezExceptForUCLA" (headaches, headaches). "Kim", "Dylan", "Jeffrey", and "Dukkie" need to use the left side of his/her brain more. Last year's "Mad Mando" is this year's "Really Mad Mando" (can't wait for "Postal Mad Mando" next year). And of course, the best name every year: "The Mighty Mobelfakta" (an old IKEA reference and he's also the creator of the pool so `nuff said).

All in all, there were several good nicknames ("Pineapple Princess", "Colorado Bruins", and "Team Samurai") and some bad nicknames ("Armin Tamzarian", "Strokin' G's Ego", and "Magster's Hampsters")- IMHO, of course. Somewhere, I'm sure, people are laughing. And my nickname, "The Fabone"? I still don't know why this was originally given (back in the first year you didn't choose your own nickname- it was giveth) but it's stuck ever since. SIX ENTRIES HAVE BETTER THAN 3 IN 10 ODDS OF WINNING MONEY

He Hate Me Too has best odds for first; Kim best odds overall

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)-- There are 32,768 possible outcomes of this pool. If we are looking at winning some money, six entries have better than 30% chance of winning, led by KIM (1st-Tied, 80 pts) with 11,926 winning scenarios (36.4%). But it's HE HATE ME TOO (6th-T, 78) with the greatest chance of winning the $275 first-place prize (16.7%). LIL PQ (1st-T, 80) and ZERV THE GREEK (4th-T, 79) are the only others with a better than 1 in 10 of winning first (14.5 and 12.7%, respectively). Sixteen (16) have a better than 10% chance of winning money. But only four will- the breakdown: 1st: $275, 2nd: $150, 3rd: $100, 4th: $65. The tiebreaker (total points in Final) could play a key role in determining the winners.

Thirty-six (36) entries still have a chance for first place with RQE (30th-T, 69) with only four chances (0.01%). Fifty-three entries still have a chance for at least the $65 fourth-place prize with PATTOMAN (34th-T, 68) with only eight chances (0.02%). Of course, some of these chances are if Gonzaga beats Georgetown in the Final, but hey, at least there's a small hope. Six entries have no chance at all. DYLAN (62), tied for 53rd place, actually has 110 possible outcomes (0.3%) for first place (thanks to his UCLA pick to win it all). So anything can happen. It'll be a wild weekend.

TROJANS PROVIDE LONE UPSET AS #1 SEEDS STRUGGLE TO VICTORY

Same three culprits on top as 11 more drop out of contention

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)-- #6E-USC jumped to a 31-10 lead before #2E- Kentucky woke up and held on to a 80-76 win to advance to the Elite 8. The Wildcats struggled to hit their free throws but came within one with 32 seconds left. USC was quickly outscored 22-5 at the beginning of the second half but never lost the lead. While Kentucky blew the game at the free throw line, #3W-Maryland hit most of theirs down the stretch to keep #10W-Georgetown at a distance, 76-66.

Jason Williams got 34 points to lead #1E-Duke past #4E-UCLA, 76- 63. Both teams had horrible first half (<30%) and great second half (>50%) shooting. UCLA, playing with foul trouble, came within six with nine minutes left before Duke started to pull away. #1W-Stanford also battled with #6W-Cincinnati (trailing at halftime) before the big men stepped up with a hard-fought 78-65 victory. Who would've thought USC would get to the Elite 8? They start out strong, are scary in the middle, but then somehow manage to pull it out at the end (led 50-19 vs OK-ST before OK-ST pulled within 14 with 7 minutes left; led 27-13 and 56-45 before BC pulled within one).

Thirty-one entries went 3-1 for the day but this just left the top spot in a 3-way tie again between KIM, LIL PQ, and NICKNAME (92 pts). USC and Maryland's wins sent six more entries home. UCLA's loss sent 4 of 6 who picked UCLA out of money contention. Stanford's win eliminated PANMAN (54th, 71). Still, 42 entries remain in a battle for



the top four spots and 25 still have a chance for first place. This will likely be one of the most contested HWCI NCAA pools ever. UCLA's loss will guarantee DYLAN (56th, 66) will go 0-for-7 (games) in the Final Four with all four teams he's picked now out of the tourney. KIM increased her chances of winning money to almost 44% while HE HATE ME TOO now has a 20.5% chance of placing first. With most people picking the favorites, the game to watch tomorrow will be Illinois- Kansas (last game of the day).

TEMPLE ROLLS TO THIRD STRAIGHT EASY WIN; #1 SEEDS ADVANCE

Kim takes sole possession of first and 50% chance of money

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)-- For the third straight game, #11S-Temple built up a 20+-point 2nd half lead and coasted into the Elite 8 with a 84-72 win over #7S-Penn St. Temple has managed to easily knock off the #5-7 seeds but will face a tough challenge against #1S-Michigan St. who earlier knocked off fan-favorite #12S-Gonzaga, 77-62.

The Midwest Final will feature the top two teams as #2MW-Arizona fought off #3MW-Ole Miss, 66-56, and #1MW-Illinois bruising #4MW- Kansas to victory, 80-64. Kansas could not hit their free throws (Nick Collison missing five in a row at one stretch late in the second half) and their bench was outscored, 28-0. Arizona played one of the worst first halves in a tourney game (missed more layups than on a Saturday pickup game at Biola and numerous rebounds off the head and lost) I've seen but still managed to pick up the victory after settling down in the second half.

LIL PQ (10th-Tied, 96 pts) went from tied for first place to eliminated in two games (after Arizona's win). NICKNAME (3rd-T, 100) was the only person to get Temple's victory but only got 2 of 4 correct leaving KIM (1st, 104) all alone in first. She also now has a 51.6% chance of winning money and a 19.5% chance of placing first. Fourteen people



went 6-2 for the round while DYLAN (58th-T, 70) went just 2-6 and will sit forever this year on 70 points.

Michigan St.'s win eliminated UCLA SUCKS! (51st, 82). Arizona's win eliminated five and Temple's win knocked FREE SPLASHER (15th-T, 94) chance for first place. The big game was Illinois-Kansas. The outcome sent 6 out of the 12 who picked Kansas out of the running. BUCKEYE MIKE (34th, 87) also was sent home. This day spelled the doom of most of the core of HWCI: MOMMY BOUGHT ACCORD, UTHPOPE, ALSTAR, THE FLYING ELVI (who always seem to follow the way of ALSTAR), and THE MIGHTY MOBELFAKTA; FREE FABONE has exactly 1 chance in 128 of winning 4th place. ROSEMEAD, CA (smt)- #3W-Maryland's superior outside shooting knocked out #1W-Stanford (31-3), 87-73, to reach the Final Four for the first time in history. Stanford's stunning loss continues a tournament streak where all 4 #1 seeds have failed to reach the Final Four. #1E-Duke did its part, beating upset-minded #6E-USC, 79-69. The Pac-10 went 0-2 and only has Arizona left. Duke didn't let USC jump out to a big lead as in USC's previous three games. It would have been neat to see Duke beat Pac-10 teams UCLA, USC, Stanford, and Arizona en route to the title. Now we get the ACC battle between Duke and Maryland in the semifinal.

NICKNAME (102 pts) was one of four people to get both games correct and retook the top position. HE HATE ME TOO (100 pts) also did it to move into a tie with KIM for 2nd place. Sixteen entries went 0-2. Stanford's loss knocked eight entries out including both of Scott T.'s (FREE FABONE, THE FABONE 7) picks and the last of two picks of Mike K. and Fernando B. Only Robinson C. has at least one of his multiple entries alive (actually, 2 of 3).

Now as there has never been a time where all four #1 seeds have made the Final Four, there also has never been a single person to get 4 out of 4 teams correct in the pool. Well, BINGO (4th, 108) and PEEPS (20th, 98) are halfway there and are the only entries to have a chance to go 4-for-4. He also now has the best odds (59.4%) of winning money. Three people have a 1 in 6 chance for first place (KIM, NICKNAME, BINGO). If you count two of



Robinson C.'s entries (HE HATE ME TOO and TEAM SUMARAI (5th, 106)) he has 7 chances for first place and 28 chances for money with one of the two and several chances to get both entries (he entered 3 times) in the money.

`ZONA OUTLASTS ILLINOIS ONSLAUGHT; SPARTANS IN FINAL FOUR AGAIN

Bingo and Peeps get all four Final Four teams right

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)-- Yesterday set up an all-ACC matchup between Duke and Maryland in the semifinal. Today, there was hope that there would be an all-Big 10 matchup between Michigan St. and Illinois. #1S-Michigan St. did its part, holding off a #11S-Temple team that would not die, 69-62, the first time in 10 NCAA tournament games the Spartans didn't win by double figures. Temple, which won their previous 3 games by an average of 15 points, found themselves behind by 12 early and could never get closer than 3 points. Michigan St. became just the third team since the field expanded to 64 (now 65) teams to reach the Final Four three years in a row.

#1MW-Illinois tried to follow the Spartans' lead but fell to #2MW-Arizona, 87-81. Illinois had a 56-54 lead but the Wildcats scored 10 straight points en route to a 73-62 lead with two minutes left. Illinois put up a fight hitting five 3-pointers but could not overcome Arizona's free throws (getting as close as 74-71 with 1:38 left). Six, I said six, Illinois players fouled out and Arizona took 56 free throws (making 43, or 77%). There were 59 fouls (36 on Illinois) and 81 free throw attempts that made the last five minutes last an eternity. Arizona is the lone Pac-10 survivor after USC and Stanford were knocked out yesterday.



Like LIL PQ before him, NICKNAME (9th-Tied, 112 pts) went from on top of the world to being eliminated in two games. Arizona's win sealed his fate as well as four others. Michigan St.'s earlier win eliminated JINX, TABBY, and JAYBIAN V. BINGO (1st, 120) and PEEPS (10th-T, 110) became the first HWCI NCAA pool players to ever get all four teams right in the Final Four (now just 2 of 212 entries have done so). UTHPOPE, PATTOMAN, PINEAPPLE PRINCESS, and DYLAN became the 15th-19th people to ever get none of their Final Four teams right. Thirty-three people have already reached 100 points (a record, of course). BINGO still has a chance to tie the all-time record of 148 points set by the original BIX PIX in 1995.

ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER DIFFERENT POOL CHAMPION TO BE CROWNED

No one is guaranteed money as 12 vie for spots

LA MIRADA/EL SEGUNDO, CA (smt)-- The 7th Annual HWCI NCAA Pool will crown a 7th different champion as early as Saturday night and at least three people will get their first taste of finishing in the money. Lisa F. (ARMIN TAMZARIAN (6th-Tied, 113 pts)) is the only person trying to win money twice (1999-1st). Scott T.'s run of three consecutive years finishing in the money (1998-3rd, 1999-2nd, 2000-3rd) will end this year. Just a reminder that first place nets a record $275, 2nd place will get $150, 3rd place will receive $100, and the lucky 4th place winner will get a hearty $65 ($70 was the first place prize in 1995).

Three people have a 1 in 4 chance of winning first place. BINGO (120) was one of two people to go 4-for-4 the past two days to go from tied for 10th place to first place. Robinson C.'s last of three entries still alive, TEAM SAMURAI (2nd, 118), also has a 75% chance of winning money. DUKKIE (9th-T, 112) will try to ride out Maryland's championship to the grand prize. Two others have one chance for first place: ZERV THE GREEK (5th, 115) and PEEPS (14th-T, 110).

Seven others have a chance to win some money. Sunday was a disaster for those at the top- NICKNAME went



from 1st place to eliminated (9th-T, 112); HE HATE ME TOO went from tied for 2nd to eliminated (14th-T, 110); KIM went from tied for 2nd to no better than finishing in 4th place (4th, 116). On the flip side, the past two days have seen PEEPS jump from tied for 36th place to tied for 14th place with still a chance for first place.

What it boils down to is that if Michigan St. and Duke win their semifinal games, BINGO wins the pool. If Duke and Arizona win, TEAM SUMARAI wins the $275 prize. If Maryland is crowned the 2001 NCAA Champion, DUKKIE will be dancing in the streets. ZERV THE GREEK wins if Michigan St. beats Maryland in the Final and PEEPS will cap an incredible comeback if Arizona beats Maryland in the Final. THE HWCI NCAA POOL: THE PAST SIX YEARS Overall leaders and the "best" predictors list

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)-- There are several strategies into picking the 63 games in the NCAA tournament. One can pick all the favorites, stick with all #1 seeds to make the Final Four (which has never happened), pick on hunches and gut feelings, pick based on seedings having never watched college basketball, or pick based on local or alma mater or favorite teams. And you can ask your friends. But who do you trust and who is the mole?

First off, pick the correct champion. Unfortunately, if ten other people pick your team to win, well, only four of you will win money. There have been two years where no one picked the correct champion (the two years a #1 seed didn't win) but the ones who have won the top prize picked at least the runner-up. Of the other four years, the only person to win any money (14 spots) and not pick the correct champion was CARSERONI (Gareth M.) in 1999 when he picked Duke to win it all (UConn beat Duke in the Final) and finished in 3rd place instead of 1st place. In fact, only 4 of 36 people picked UConn and 3 of them won money.

Secondly, the first round is key despite only two points per win. Fall too far behind and it's hard to catch up. Of the six pool champions, only MAX (Sean D.) in 1997 was not within one win of first place (23 wins vs 26 wins for the leader). And if you're playing for fun, everyone gets more than half the games right- except for this crazy year (and let's not talk about TRUE BRUIN (Loretta A.) in 1999 and BETHEON (Beth S.) in 2000).



Here are the best and worst of the predictors. Power points are calculated based on your placement in the pool and the size of the pool. For example, in a pool of 12 people, finishing 1st gets 1.0 power point, 7th (middle) 0.5 points, and 12th (last) 0.08 pts. In a pool of 36, finishing 1st gets 1.0 pt, 6th 0.86 pts, 18th (middle) 0.5 pts, and 36th (last) 0.03 pts. The closer to an average of 1.0 power point, the better you have done in the pool. "YR" indicates number of years in pool; "EN" indicates total number of entries in pool.

FINAL FOUR KICKS OFF WITH MICHIGAN ST.-ARIZONA Pool up in air as 12 people vie for $590 in prizes

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)-- The Final Four will kick off on Saturday with the #1S-Michigan St.-#2MW-Arizona game in Minneapolis, MN at 2:42 pm PST. Thirty-five minutes after that game ends, #1E-Duke and #3W-Maryland will battle for the fourth time this season. Arizona and Maryland are facing their second straight #1 seed. Arizona in 1997 is the only team to beat 3 #1 seeds en route to the title.

The 7th HWCI NCAA Pool will be one of the most competitive. Twelve people have a chance at money and five have a chance to win first place. TEAM SAMURAI will win money as long as Michigan St. and Maryland don't both win and will clinch first place if Duke and Arizona go to the Final. BLUESTARS1996 and BINGO will definitely win money if Michigan St. wins. BINGO will get $275 if Duke and Michigan St. both play on Monday. ARMIN



TAMZARIAN is guaranteed to win something if Duke and Arizona both win. DUKKIE gets in if Arizona and Maryland both pull out victories. ZERV THE GREEK will share the dough if Michigan St. and Maryland advance. All others will depend on the result of the championship game and possible tiebreaker.

For the fifth time, someone will pick the correct champion as at least one person has pegged one of the Final Four teams to win it all. Sixteen people still have both of the final teams alive. On the other side, twelve people can't win any more points. Saturday will also see if PEEPS can keep alive a seemingly improbable run from last to first. PEEPS was dead last after the first round (59th), tied for 53rd after the second round, tied for 36th after Round 3, and now is tied for 14th after the Elite 8. PEEPS can win first if Arizona beats Maryland in the Final.

Being eliminated, I will be stress free and will watch the games with pure enjoyment. Good luck to those who are left.

`ZONA STEALS ONE FROM SPARTANS; DUKE RALLIES PAST MARYLAND

Team Samurai is crowned pool champion thanks to Duke's comeback

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)-- In both games today, one team jumped out to a big lead but one team held the lead and one team lost it. #2MW- Arizona began the second half on a 21-3 run to open up a 20-point lead it never lost. The Wildcats had most of their 12 steals (Gilbert Arenas with six) in the second half to whip #1S-Michigan St. (28-7), 80-61. The Spartans did come within nine (57-48) but turnovers helped Arizona (on a 15-4 run) blow the game back open. Arizona defeated their second straight #1 seed (def. #1MW-Illinois in Elite 8) and will try to duplicate their 1997 championship run of beating three straight #1 seeds.

#3W-Maryland (25-11) exploded to a 22-point lead (39-17) with 6:57 left in the first half but only led by 11 at the half. #1E-Duke methodically continued to whittle away at the Terrapins' lead until they finally went ahead at 73-72. The Blue Devils eventually made a 33-point turnaround, winning 95-84. Duke set an NCAA record with the biggest halftime comeback in Final Four history. Duke beat Maryland for the third time in four tries this season and will try to duplicate their 1992 championship run of winning the 1st/2nd round games in Greensboro, NC, the 3rd/4th round games in Philadelphia, PA, and the Final Four and Championship at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN.



Duke's incredible comeback gave the 2001 HWCI NCAA Pool title to Robinson C. (TEAM SAMURAI, 1st, 134 pts). TEAM SAMURAI had earlier clinched at least 4th place with Arizona's win. On the other hand, the Wildcats' win doomed BLUESTARS1996, KIM, ZERV THE GREEK, and INDY to wonder "what if?" and sent BINGO to no better than 3rd place. Duke's win meant PEEPS won't complete the last to first finish but still has a chance for 2nd place. Maryland's loss sent COLORADO BRUINS and DUKKIE home. Meanwhile, Lisa F. (ARMIN TAMZARIAN) will clinch at least 4th place and will win money for the second time in three years. Eight people went 2-0 but BINGO (chose Michigan St.) and PEEPS (chose Maryland) missed their chance to become the first people to go 7-0 for the Final Four. Thirty-nine people have reached 100 points.

Four people (BINGO, JAYHAWK FC, PEEPS, and JEFFERY) will fight for the final two money spots (with TEAM SAMURAI and A.TAMZARIAN clinching money spots) with a possibility of the tiebreaker coming into play.

ROBINSON C. BECOMES 7TH DIFFERENT POOL CHAMPION The ins and outs of the HWCI NCAA pool that could

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)- The 7th HWCI NCAA Tournament Pool will produce its 7th different champion, as Robinson C (aka, TEAM SAMURAI) used one of his three entries to HWCI-record $275 1st Place prize. Arguably the most competitive tournament, the five people who have at one time been at first place after each of the first four rounds won't win the top prize and only BINGO could salvage something (3rd if Duke wins). A record 12 people (including 5 with a chance for first) were still alive after the Elite 8. After a record-low win average for the first round (20.6), things picked up with a current average of 106.7 pts per entry, the highest average in five years.

Scott T's (THE FABONE 7) streak of three straight money-winning pools ended with Stanford's Elite 8 loss. Lisa F (ARMIN TAMZARIAN) will win at least 4th place for her second win (was the 5th HWCI NCAA pool champion in



1999). If she wins 2nd place, she will be the most successful pool picker at $330 ($245 if she finishes 4th). The pool, from its modest beginnings in 1995 when just 12 people participated, has almost increased the pot six times with $590.

A little history...

In 1995, the first year of the pool, just 12 people entered in a modest effort put forth by HW-UCLA and their close friends. Names like BAD ASS and LIVER BOY graced the pool. Of course, their interest was heightened because UCLA was favored to win it all. Indeed, 10 of 12 picked UCLA while 2 picked Kentucky. This pool featured the infamous LOSER WHO DIDN'T PICK UCLA (Dennis K) who set an all-time record with a 14-2 2nd Round to go from tied for 9th to tied for 1st before going 0-7 in the final 3 rounds to finish dead last (12th) with 98 points. TINA'S BOY (Mark C) became the first person to be eliminated when the 2nd round ended. He is, however, one of only 3 people (all in 1995) to correctly pick the two teams in the final and the champion. BIX PIX (Fernando B, 1st, 148) and MR. NELSON (Nelson, 2nd, 146) were the other two and claimed the top two spots, winning $70 and $30, respectively. THE MIGHTY MOBELFAKTA (Dave F, 3rd, 141) claimed third prize worth $20. All but one finished with 110 points or more, the highest scoring pool ever (130.6 average).

In 1996, 19 people participated in the pool. Without the HW-UCLA guys picking nicknames, we had some boring stuff like JAMES, JOSEPH, and HEATHER. That year, the total points tiebreaker was first used to settle ties. A newcomer, JAYBIAN (Jason S, 1st, 144) rode Kentucky to a first place prize of $110. He also set a record going 8-0 for the 3rd round and never looked back. BIX PIX TWEY (Fernando B, 5th, 129) hoping to duplicate last year's effort, fell short of winning money thanks to his loyalty to UCLA. JOSEPH (Joseph K, 2nd, 140) and JAMES (James L, 3rd, 139) won $50 and $30, respectively. Six picked Kentucky that year with just as many picking UCLA (who lost to Princeton in the first round- ouch!). This was the first year someone entered twice (Dave F) and ended up 11th (REALISTIC MOBELFAKTA, 113) and 16th (THE MIGHTY MOBELFAKTA, 106). MM and HATE THE DUCKS (Mark C, 12th, 112) became the 2nd and 3rd people to go 0-for-the- Final-Four. HATE THE DUCKS had a 64% chance of winning money heading into the 4th round, and 0% chance after. THE CHEF (Douglas H, 19th, 80) set an all-time low in points for a pool.

In 1997, the first real debate on whether to raise the pool fee to $20 from $10 was raised. Fortunately, it was defeated in a vote. But, three people did plunk down $20 to enter twice as 22 entries were received in the third annual pool. Like Dave F before them, the three people went moneyless (Tuan H- RODERICK (15th, 97) and RHODES (14th, 97); Alvin K- BAD ASS I (4th, 111) and BAD ASS II (18th, 93); and Dennis K- LENNY (6th, 107) and DUKE (12th, 99)). This was also the first year no one picked the correct NCAA champion. Arizona, who usually bowed out in the first or second round, surprised everyone, including Kentucky, in winning the championship in overtime. The #4SE seed beat three # 1 seeds, the first time that's happened. Twelve had picked Kansas and four North Carolina, neither which made the championship game. MAX (Sean D, 1st, 116) bounced back from a 15th place finish the year before to win the $125 top prize. The brothers Selander took 2nd (Brian S, THE FLYING ELVI, 2nd, 115) and 3rd (Jason S, JAYBIAIN II, 3rd, 113) for $60 and $35, respectively. Jason S became the first person to win money twice (1st in 1996). Just half (11 of 22) finished 100 points or higher.

In 1998, a record 28 entries tried their luck. ANNA COME LATELY (Anna, 1st, 126), the last entry we received,



seemed like the least likely to win, picking a Utah over UCLA final. Well, Utah surprised the 27 other entrants (no one else even had them in the Final Four) and gave ANNA COME LATELY the record top prize of $150. James L became the 2nd person to win twice taking the $70 second place prize (CAVEMAN, 2nd, 113) while THE FABONE (Scott T, 3rd, 110) won money for the first time in four tries to take home $40. For the first time, a 4th place prize was created and that went to SCOTTMAN (Scott H, 4th, 108), which was also the first time the tiebreaker played a part in the top spots as SCOTTMAN won the 4-way tie for 4th place. With Kentucky's rally and win over Utah in the final, this was the 2nd straight year no one picked the champion. Sixteen pegged UNC while five hoped for an Arizona repeat. UTHOPE (Donald G, 24th, 92) became the 4th person to go 0-7 in the last three rounds. ANNA COME LATELY's 13-point win was the largest margin of victory ever. Tuan H once again entered twice with the same results- no money (STRAIGHT BUTTER, 10th, 106 and EN FUEGO, 13th, 104) extending the drought for dual entries to 0-for-5.

In 1999, a record 36 entries (18 NCAA pool newcomers, 13 pool newcomers if you include those who participated in the World Cup Pool) were received with two dual entries (Scott T- THE FABONE V and FREE FABONE and Gareth M- CARSERONI and MAJERUS FOR SDSU). Mark C (DARKSHARK) became the first person to go 0-for-7 in the Final Four twice (1996). SHARY BOBBINS (Lisa T, 1st, 146) and CARSERONI (Gareth M, 3rd, 120) became the 12th and 13th different people to win HWCI NCAA pool money. Scott T (FREE FABONE) and Gareth M (CARSERONI) broke a streak of winless dual entries with a 2nd and 3rd Place finish in one of their entries. James L (BIG GAME, 5th, 117) bid to go 3-for-3 in winning money came falling down with Duke's stunning loss. Three of four people who picked UConn (29 picked Duke) to win it all won money. Fernando B (BIG SPIDER BECK, 4th, 118) had just a 4 in 132 chance to win money and took 4th, his second winning entry ever. Loretta A (TRUE BRUIN, 36th, 67) finished with all-time record low in points.

In 2000, a record-tying 36 entries once again tried their luck as 14 newcomers entered. Sam N (MORALES' MOUNDS, 122 pts) becomes the sixth different champion after finishing 26th and 31st in the previous two years. He became the first person to either be tied or in the lead after each of the six rounds. After a record breaking first round that saw two people get 30 of 32 first round games correct, the brackets started to fall apart as no one got more than 3 of 8 Sweet Sixteen games correct and eight people will go 0-7 in the Final Four (just six have done so before (117 entries)). Just one #1 and one #2 seed advanced to the Elite Eight. Dave F (THE MIGHTY MOBELFAKTA) returns to the winner's circle with a 2nd Place finish. Scott T (FREE FABONE and THE FABONE VI) won money for a record third straight pool. Beth S (BETHEON, 36th, 62) shattered the all-time low in points. Fourteen people pegged Michigan St. as the correct champion. Craig E (CRAIGS99) won 4th place in his first pool.

In 2001, a record shattering 59 entries were received by 53 people (21 new people). Robinson C (TEAM SAMURAI) won the biggest prize ever of $275 after finishing 3rd to last (34th) last year. He entered three times and it worked. Three others (Scott T, Mike K, Fernando B) went winless in both of their entries after the last three people to enter twice won money (3-8 overall for those with 2 entries; Robinson is the first 3-time entry-er). Sam N (B-S FC), last year's pool champion, and Dylan R (DYLAN) become just the 3rd and 4th people to not get at least half the games correct. Four people went 0-7 in the Final Four (just 18 people have done so out of 212 entries) with Donald G (UTHPOPE) doing it for the second time (Mark C is the only other person with this dubious distinction). Eleven different teams were picked to be the champion with 18 picking Stanford, 15 Duke, and 8 Arizona. DUNLEAVY'S THREES HELP COACH K TO THIRD NCAA TITLE, 82-72

Bingo and Jayhawk FC capture final two money spots

LA MIRADA, CA (smt)- Though the refs may have helped Duke (apparently, shoving off with your forearm is NOT a foul) keep Jason Williams in the game, it was Mike Dunleavy's barrage of threes (including 3 in 45 seconds to give Duke a 49-39 lead and all 18 second-half points in a 7-minute span) and all-around play of Shane Battier that helped #1E-Duke (35-4) hold off #2MW-Arizona (28-8), 82- 72, in the Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN (er, Twin Cities). Duke completed the same trip as in 1992, their last title, by winning in Minneapolis. The win gave Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski his third NCAA title (won 1991 and 1992). Arizona center Loren Woods, who usually settles



in the background and lets his guards do all the scoring, had to step up and had a great game. The Wildcats went just 4 for 22 from 3-point range (missed their first 10 attempts) while Duke went 9 for 27 (Dunleavy 5 for 9). Arizona failed to duplicate their amazing feat in 1997 of beating three straight #1 seeds.

Duke's win eliminated Wildcat pickers PEEPS (21st, 118) and JEFFERY (22nd, 118) and gave 3rd and 4th place to Bing F. (BINGO (140)) and Sam P. (JAYHAWK FC (139)). Lisa F. (ARMIN TAMZARIAN (141)) took 2nd place and increased her career pool earnings to $330 and becomes the first person to top 140 points in two separate pools. Robinson C. (TEAM SAMURAI) already clinched the $275 first place prize on Saturday. Fifteen picked Duke to win it all while eight who picked Arizona go home unhappy. Forty people have topped 100 points (a record) and TEAM SAMURAI's 146 points ties for 2nd highest total ever. Seven people went 3-0 in the Final Four including CORNDOG (110) who moved from 56th place to 30th. The tiebreaker didn't break many ties. Three different sets of people remained tied (same point difference)- this has only happened once in the previous five years (the first year used no tiebreaker). The three people tied for 16th all guessed 144 points (chosen by five people). FYI, total points was 154 and no one guessed it correctly (another oddity, only two people in 200 entries have guessed correctly).

Topsy-turvy pool settles with Robinson crowned champ

EL SEGUNDO, CA (smt)-- The Duke Blue Devils had to go through three Pac-10 teams (would've been four if Stanford didn't choke to Maryland) to capture their third NCAA title in 11 years. The preseason #1 and 2 (Arizona and Duke) met for the 2001 Final. Arguably one of the most exciting first rounds in recent memory, the last three rounds featured some great games but no buzzer beaters. In fact, in the last 31 games (last 5 rounds), only two games were decided by less than four points- and one of those games, BC decided to go for two points against USC instead of trying for a three to tie- therefore a lack of drama. Which brings us to the final thoughts on the tournament.

● BONEHEAD PLAY: #3E-Boston College's Kenny Harley with seconds left, going for a layup instead of trying a 3-pointer to tie vs #6E-USC.

● GREATEST MOMENT: #15W-Hampton coach Steve Merfeld jumping up and down and being carried around by his players after stunning #2W-Iowa St. in the first round.

● UNDERRATED TEAM(S): A haphazard USC team pulling together wins over #3E-BC and #2E-Kentucky. A tough #11S-Temple team beating a #3, #6, and #7 seed to make the Elite 8.

● NO FOOLING US: No one except the NCAA committee (who gave them a 12 seed) was fooled by Gonzaga as they made the Sweet 16 for the third year in a row.

● OVERRATED TEAM(S): Aforementioned Iowa St. and BC, who thought they deserved a higher seed. Wrong! Stanford once again fell short (losing in the 2nd round the past two years) of "their" year.

● MONKEY OFF THE BACK: #5W-Cincinnati, a lower seed than in previous years, makes the Sweet 16 for the first time in five tries. #4MW- Kansas avoiding their fourth straight 2nd round loss.

● WHAT THE HECK?: #10MW-Butler had a 43-10 halftime lead over #7MW-Wake Forest? Temple led 50-28 over #5S-Florida? #3W-Maryland exploded to a 39-17 lead over #1E-Duke? USC jumped to a 31-10 lead over Kentucky? Something's in the water. Only Duke rallied to win.

● CAKEWALK: #1S-Michigan St. got to play a #16, #9, #12, and #11 seed to get to the Final Four. Temple demolishing their first three higher-seeded opponents, leading by 20 or more in the second half in each game.



● ANNOYING MAN: Someone should tell CBS analyst Billy Packer to call Duke "Duke", not "Duke University" and also to take his lips off Duke's ass (is he looking for an honorary doctorate from Duke?). Duke's a great team but CBS's bias towards Duke (as well as the refs) made the game less enjoyable to watch. Oh yeah, tell CBS that EyeVision doesn't work for basketball games (in the Super Bowl is was *sometimes* useful).

● MISNOMER: The intentional foul. Now, isn't any foul in the last minutes while your team is down an intentional foul? Maybe it should be called a flagrant foul. But it was called so randomly by the refs during the first two rounds that I didn't know what to make of it.

● GROUP WINNER: Apparently, the Pac-10 rules except for Cal. The conference's other four teams went 13-4 for the best conference record (13-5 with Cal's loss) in the tourney. The ACC went 11-5 and he Mighty Big 10 went 10-7.

● CHANGE THE RULES: Hey, no more than « your conference's teams should make the tournament. So the Big 10 with 11 teams gets no more than 5 teams. Or at least have the team win half its conference games (Penn St. was 7-9 in Big 10 play). Get rid of the "Opening Game"- what a joke (only 6,813 fans were "announced"; less showed up). Let more mid-major conference teams in. They make the tourney exciting.

● ODD: ESPN/USA Today released their Top 25 coaches' poll today. Why? Isn't that why we have a tournament? (FYI, Duke, Arizona, Michigan St. and Maryland were the top 4- what a surprise. though UCLA was ranked 12th and USC 14th).

● BEST HAIR: Arizona's Eugene Edgerson.

And my final pool thoughts:

● CONGRATS: Robinson ($275), Lisa ($150), Bing ($100), and Sam ($65).● FOOLED ME: Kudos to those who picked Maryland over Stanford. You saw something I didn't. Also to

those who didn't believe the BC hype.● AMAZING PICKS: Dan S. (NICKNAME) picking Temple to beat Penn St. in the Sweet 16. Three people

each picked Kent St. and Indiana St's upsets (but no one thought Hampton would stun Iowa St). Two (DYLAN and TABBY) people actually picked USC to make the Elite 8.

● MOST BIZZARE PICKS: Although one of his entries won, Robinson C.'s HE HATE ME TOO's entry had Gonzaga winning it all. Sam N. (B-S FC) had Bulter in the Final Four.

● OUCH: In the first 11 games, Catrina B. (DECEMBER) had two of her Final Four teams knocked out (Ohio St. and Indiana).

● SURPRISES: Only six of 59 entries were eliminated after the second round. Thirteen were eliminated last year and we only had 36 entries.

● ONE YEAR: Sam N. won the 2000 HWCI NCAA Pool but finished 58th this year. Robinson C. finished 34th (of 36) last year and won this year's pool (albeit he needed three entries to do it).
