On September 7, 1949, India’s Department of Posts and Telegraphs introduced theinland postal card as an economical form of in-country communication. Using theprint-free area adjacent to the postal indicium for advertising was a laterdevelopment, first appearing June 5, 1975. A little over two years later, onOctober 31, 1977, the first of these with a malaria message – Fever! May bemalaria. Take chloroquine tablets – was released. Numerous additional cards witha range of malaria messages have appeared since.

Aside from the malaria messages, which were printed in as many as 13different languages or dialects for each message type, printing on the cards is inboth English and Hindi. Prior to 2003, post offices received cards in vertical stripsof at least 3 cards that could be separated via coarse rouletted connectors. Startingwith cards issued in 2003, cards were delivered to post offices in panes of 4 (2 x2) with much finer rouletting than previously.

First day cancels were applied using stock philatelic counter devices with dateadjusted as appropriate. The cancels are presented here alphabetically by city ofuse. For each cancel type, the dates and cards on which it was used are alsoprovided. In general, cards with a given language/dialect were supplied only tothose offices serving a significant population of speakers of that language/dialect.

No first day cachets have been reported.Cards with first day cancels are presented chronologically, then by language/

dialect of malaria message, and then by office. They are numbered in the sequencepresented.

Numerous cards can be found with special event cancels. Those thus far reportedare listed chronologically by cancellation date under OTHER USAGE.
