• First Class Mail get air lift wherever possible without the customer paying any air surcharge .

• Second class mail will be air lifted only when the sender pays for it.

Rule No:

• Letters are mainly used for communication, Sending applications, documents etc• Embossed envelopes are sold in the post offices.• Privately manufactured covers are also accepted .

Maximum Weight - 2 Kilograms

LETTER

2.ILC• Used for communication

• Privately manufactured ILCs are also accepted if they are of the same type and size as that of the departmentally manufactured ones.

3. Post Card

• Most economical means of communication• Open communication on a card of prescribed size• For transmission within India only• Privately manufactured postcards shall not be

thinner or more flexible than an embossed post card• Will have the same size and thickness of embossed

post card .• Dimensions- Maximum - 15x 10.5 cms. Minimum - 10x 7 cms.

• Printed Postcard - A Post card is treated as a printed post card

If the communication is other than hand written or type written ie Printing, Cyclostyling or any other mechanical process .

• Meghdoot postcard - The portion next to the address is available for

advertisements.

4. Book Packet • Book packet articles may contain greetings, invitations,circulars,horoscopes,maps,pictures etc, without personal communication • Economical when compared to letter• Should be superscribed “Book Post” or “ Bookpacket”• Should not be closed against inspection of contents • Maximum Weight : 5 kgs

•Specifications same as that of book packet•It should be registered with the Registrar of newspapers, New Delhi •The registration number should be printed on the cover page or on the wrapper.

•Weight maximum- 5 Kgs

7.SAMPLE & PATTERN PACKETS

Contents prescribed •Should contain bonafide trade patterns or sample of merchandise without any saleable value or objects of natural history without commercial purpose

•No written matter should be enclosed in it except the name & address of the sender, trade mark no., price, weight, size or quantity to be disclosed of

8.Registered Newspaper

• A newspaper is one which is published in regular intervals containing political or other news with or without advertisements

• It should be registered with the Registrar of News Papers . • It should be published in intervals of not more than 31 days.• It should have a bonafide list of subscribers• When such a newspaper is registered with the Divisional

Superintendent to avail economical transmission by post it is called as a Registered Newspaper

• It must be sent by or to the blind • Size and packing is the same as that of book packets

AIR SURCHARGE IS LEVIED IF SENT THROUGH AIR

10.Parcel• Parcels are used for transmission of goods• In addition to the goods one communication can be sent

inside a parcel .• Must be presented at the counter only• If a parcel weighs more than 4 kgs it must be compulsorily

registered

PROHIBITIONS• Articles Prohibited from Transmission by Post• Anything injurious.• Explosive, dangerous, filthy, noxious or deleterious

• Tickets, proposals etc relating to unauthorized lotteries (does not include lottery organized or authorized by government.)
