At Madrid, the students will be introduced to packaging through workshops with specific goals, expert’s lectures and visiting companies related to the production of packaging. Pedagogic/didactic methods: Learning by doing is our main pedagogical frame, so the students will have the opportunity to use special tools that are used in a real packaging production companies. The teacher will explain them the software developed by ESKO, one of our partners in the project. They will follow this introduction using their own computers, to practice the skills used. The students must be familiarized previously with the use of basic software in graphic design (illustrator, indesign and photoshop). Once they have been introduced in this new tool, they will receive a briefing and they will have to create virtual packaging models using this ESKO tool. Purpose Why do we have this course with our students? In the area of packaging design, interesting tools has been developed in recent years, which facilitate to the professionals involved in the graphic industry, the possibility to create and display 3D prototypes and models. Our purpose is that students become familiar with the use of these new tools and applications. They will learn how to work with them and they will do so in international mixed groups, which force the students to talk and communicate in a foreign language. Which in the end will improve the employability of the students. Goal Describe the learning outcomes of the activity. Goal related to packaging: The student can develop and design a virtual packaging design for a t-shirt, using professional and specialized software. The students can be able to integrate their own designs in the group brand created as a prework. The students can develop and design labels for a wine bottle and finishing these. These designs must respect the basic requirements given in the briefing, regarding to the quality of the grapes, tastes, flavors and so on. The student can use a professional typographic program and its basic functions. The student can apply image and illustration programs for the manufacturing of packaging. The student has knowledge and can develop products based on the graphic quality parameters and with consideration of workflow and finishing. The student can engage in international cooperation and constructive contribution to a joint solution, to different requirements with a focus on basic package workflow.

Learning elements implemented in practical tasks / solutions:

• 3D virtual designs using Illustrator CS5 and ESKO software: • A cardboard box for storing packets of several t-shirts (multipack) • A primary packaging of individual t-shirt (it could be a bag, box or any other container) • Identification label for the t-shirt with washing and ironing instructions • Design and production of two labels for a given wine brand bottle (front and back label) • Labels design • Labels print • Labels finishing: prepare files for die-cut machine, cut labels and stick them in the bottle • Master class in packaging design for wines by a professional • Company visit with the delivery of die-cut files of the wine labels, to cut them with their

facilities. • Elaboration of the groups keynote presentations, and explanation of it to the teachers about: • The group prework • The virtual 3D packaging created • The wine labels design • Preparation of the final exhibition with some examples of the virtual models created

(printed) and the labels glued in their own wine bottles. •

Organization How will the workshop/activity be organized – timeline and content Monday: Task 1: The students work in the mixed groups created in the previous meeting. They have already done a previous prework using social networks, and now they have to put in common their findings, to assure that they are going to work in consonance with them. Task 2: workshop about the ESKO software to create virtual 3D models of packaging. A professional from ESKO company will explain them the tool and them, will be available to solve any doubts while the students are working with it. Task 3: The students start working in their own packaging designs using ESKO software. Everyone must design a cardboard box for storing packets of several t-shirts (multipack), a primary packaging of individual t-shirt (it could be a bag, box or any other container) and an identification label for the t-shirt with washing and ironing instructions. The students receives a briefing with this requirements and on it they are asked to keep their individual designs in accordance with the brand created by them as a prework.

Tuesday Students go further with task 3. Teachers observe their work progress. Task4: Teachers and students attend a master class about packaging design for beverages given by an expert in this field. After this master class, students going on with task 3. Wednesday Task 5: Students receive a briefing to start working in the wine’s labels design. They must have group meetings outside the classroom, to get inspiration about the briefing requirements, and after that every student must prepare, print and present to teachers their own moodboard. After being revised by the teachers, the students start working in the design of the two wine labels (front and back). They have a real bottle of wine, and receive specific instructions about the die-cutting requeriments in order to get a good printed and finished label. At the end of the evening, labels must be printed, ready to take them to the die-cutting machine the next day. Teachers revise the moodboards of the students and observe their tasks. Thursday Task 6: Visit a printing company Bus to The image Company This company is one of our partners in the project. The image Company has a great professional background and is now specialized in the production of POS (point of sale displays) and everything related to advertising and visual communication. Guided tour around the company and cutting at The Image Company cutting table of some of the wine’s labels designed by the students. Task 7: Students work in groups to prepare their multimedia presentations. They must explain and show their preworks and the work done during the week in Madrid. Friday Task 8: preparing the final exhibition. Students stick their wine labels in their own wine’s bottles and put them in a special stand built to show their works. They design and print some posters to show also their 3D virtual models for the t-shirts pack Task 9: Presentations by the students. Student groups explain and present to the teachers using multimedia keynote presentations, their prework and their works during this week. Production Witch specific products will be produced and how. What kind of equipment/software is needed to reach the goals and finish the products? Once the students have learned to use the appropriate digital tools, they must use it to produce: 3D virtual models of:

• A cardboard box for storing packets of several t-shirts (multipack) • A primary packaging of individual t-shirt (it could be a bag, box or any other container) • Identification label for the t-shirt with washing and ironing instruction
