Daguerreotypes,

Ambrotypes & Tintypes Daguerreotypes have been treated lightly, forgetting the years of study and research which went into their discovery. They were invented and perfected in 1839 by a Frenchman named Daguerre, who received a pension from the French government for his contribution to the advancement of photography. We will not go into the lengthy chemical processes used, but it is interesting to know that the early pictures were exposed for twenty minutes. This did very well for landscapes, but was extremely trying for "sitters". The earliest pictures were taken on the roofs of buildings in the direct sunlight with eyes closed. Picture taking developed to such an extent that glass-roofed studios were built and equipped with mirrors for additional light. To help the subject remain still and relieve the tension on back and head, rests were used and even then the strained expression is apparent on some of the early pictures. Check out this early cartoon of this painful process.

Page 7: ~ 1 ~ Antiques from A to Z - thequeenofauctions.comthequeenofauctions.com/AA2Z/pdfs/a2z-volume4-def.pdf · Antiques from A to Z ... The Unofficial Guide to Making Money on eBay-Wiley

~ 7 ~

Antiques A to Z Cheryl Leaf Dralle ©2017 www.thequeenofauctions.com

With the advent of new chemicals, the time of exposure was reduced from 20 minutes to 5 minutes to 1 minute, and then to 30 seconds. Our own Samuel Morse, better known for the invention of the telegraph and the Morse code, had been interested in photography for some time. He went to France to visit Daguerre and brought back glowing reports of the new discovery. If made on copper they are daguerreotypes, if made on glass they are called ambrotypes and if made on tin or iron, they are called tintypes or ferrotypes. Tintypes appeared as late as 1900.

❀ Hot Tip ❀

The way to distinguish a Daguerreotype from a Tin Type is by

the base metal used. Daguerreotype used COPPER and a Tin

Type used Tin or Iron. The Daguerreotype looks like a shinny

mirror while the ambrotype and tintype look grey.

The edges of these pictures were bound to a glass cover and the whole mounted in an appropriate case, usually made of thin cedar with intricately tooled leather over it. The gay interior was of silk or die-stamped velvet. Tiny hooks and eyes held the covers in place. These cases were often highly decorative and elaborately tooled in gold. I asked two antique photo experts to help me with this section. Thank you to Morgan and Brad! Brad wanted to add that he wouldn't classify the interiors of these photo cases as "gay" since they were rather dark in color and quite somber. I had to LOL (Laugh out Loud) at that because it was the way my grandmother had referred to them in her writing so I didn't want to change the way she viewed these pieces.

Page 8: ~ 1 ~ Antiques from A to Z - thequeenofauctions.comthequeenofauctions.com/AA2Z/pdfs/a2z-volume4-def.pdf · Antiques from A to Z ... The Unofficial Guide to Making Money on eBay-Wiley

~ 8 ~

Antiques A to Z Cheryl Leaf Dralle ©2017 www.thequeenofauctions.com

Brad also cautioned us…. "It is NOT recommended to remove any photo from the protective glass and brass as the images are very delicate and can be easily damaged which will decrease the price drastically."

❀ Hot Tip ❀

Sometimes people did remove the photos from the cases and

I used to see quite a few of these for sale around my

grandmother's shop. It is worth noting, that even the empty

cases that used to house these Daguerreotypes, ambrotypes

and tintypes, can sell for big bucks.

Check out this Google image search I did for "le bon bourgeois daguerreotype." I used the French for "The good Bourgeois (middle class)" in my search because that is what the cartoon I previously shared with you was titled . I just love these amazing antique pictures.

At the time of the Word's Fair Exposition, held in New York in 1853, the making of daguerreotypes reached its zenith. Daguerre's originals sold for $24.00 each but by 1855 they sold in America for $2.50 to $5.00 each. "Sun pictures" have a definite place in the American scene. They were as popular in grandmothers (or great-great grandmother's day ) as our present color photography. The world owes a debt of gratitude to both Daguerre and his American colleague, Samuel Morse.

❀ Hot Tip ❀

Daguerreotypes sell for big bucks. The average selling price for the past 90 days on eBay was $99.30 with a 32.26% sell through.

Check out this one that sold for $2,750. Yes, you read that correctly. Isn't it amazing? It is a Daguerreotype of what looks like a Miner's wife who is holding a Daguerreotype of her husband on the table.

Title and Description: "Daguerreotype of Tinted Beautiful Gold Miner's Wife Holding Dag of Husband

Page 10: ~ 1 ~ Antiques from A to Z - thequeenofauctions.comthequeenofauctions.com/AA2Z/pdfs/a2z-volume4-def.pdf · Antiques from A to Z ... The Unofficial Guide to Making Money on eBay-Wiley

Up for auction is this GREAT 1/6 PLATE Daguerreotype of a possible Gold Miner's Beautiful Wife. This lovely beauty is wearing an off the shoulder short sleeve dress and is holding an open daguerreotype of her husband. She is also wearing what looks like Gold Nugget drop earrings, a Gold Nugget brooch, and a Gold Nugget bracelet. Her lips, cheeks and the pad on the Daguerreotype image she is holding have all been delicately tinted. The image is so sharp that you can see the lace clearly on her open fingered gloves as well as the details of the man in the Daguerreotype image she is holding. This is a remarkable Daguerreotype taken by a master that should highlight a special collection. She looks like she could walk off the plate. I will let the photo speak for itself.

Page 11: ~ 1 ~ Antiques from A to Z - thequeenofauctions.comthequeenofauctions.com/AA2Z/pdfs/a2z-volume4-def.pdf · Antiques from A to Z ... The Unofficial Guide to Making Money on eBay-Wiley

This early Daguerreotype image is in great condition with only tarnish around the mat opening. The plate when tilted is a perfect mirror surface with no spots. There is some dust under the glass that could easily be removed by the next owner and the plate is completely free of any debris and / or spots. The seals are present but I have never taken the preserver off this image. This has not been opened or cleaned in any way. The case has an intact but weak spine."

There are three types of EARLY antique photographs, the Daguerreotype, the tintype and the ambrotype. #1… 1839-60 The Daguerreotype is the rarest and most valuable as we have just seen. It was printed on a silver plated copper plate and has a reflective surface like a modern day hologram. It has a magical mirror like quality and can reflect writing on a piece of paper. If you look at it from one angle it can appear shiny and bright and from another it will look more matte and darker. A magnet will NOT stick to a Daguerreotype because copper repels a magnet.

Here is a recent sale for an actual Daguerreotype camera. It sold for $5,580. I did receive permission from the famous camera seller who is located in Japan to use these photos as I always do before sharing anything in an article, ezine or eBook.

This replica was made in France in 1839, the same year when the original one was made!" #2… 1854-1860 The Ambrotype was printed on a transparent glass plate with a black backing. To tell the difference between a Tintype and an ambrotype a magnet can be also be used however, please keep in mind that there were some ambrotypes that were printed on glass and backed with metal. The ambrotype will also have a three dimensional quality from the thickness of the glass.

Ambrotypes average selling price for the past 90 days on

eBay was $99.03. Not far behind the Daguerreotype.

Here is a sale of a recent ambrotype. Check out the subject matter. Yikes! The seller started this auction at $9.95 (brave if you ask me) and it got 17 bids and ended up selling for $896.99. Smart move starting it low!

Title and description….. "1860s POST MORTEM Deceased MAN in CASKET w WOMAN AMBROTYPE PHOTO in 1/2 CASE This is nice looking ambrotype photo from the 1860-70s era that features a post mortem image of a deceased young man in his casket while his young wife poses with him.

#3… 1860-1900's The Tintype was printed on a thin iron plate that looks like tin and the image will have low contrast and not much reflection. A magnet will definitely stick to a tintype. As far as casings for these three different types, the Daguerreotype was typically found in a case as shown above and sealed behind a thick piece of glass to protect the easily damaged silvery image. The case would be a wooden hinged case covered with embossed leather and lined with silk or velvet to face the picture. The Ambrotype would most likely also be housed in a case. The Tintype could be in a case but most that I have seen were not in any type of casing. In addition to no housing, tintypes can be found in cases, in a frame or in a paper envelope with a viewing window. Here is a sale of a recent tintype that sold at auction for $341.50 and received 3 bids. The starting bid price was $325.00.

”9th Plate Tin Type of Georgia Confederate in Half Case Nice clean tintype of Confederate from Georgia. Soldier wears a butternut brown shell jacket with single row of buttons and a stingy brim hat with one side turned up with a feather in the fold of the hat. I took the photo out of the mat and preserver so you could see the entire photograph. Nice clean and very stable tintype so look at the photos and ask questions."

❀ Hot Tip ❀

There are two ways of spelling Tintype. The correct way

Tintype and Tin type. Tintypes are nothing to turn your nose

up at either; however they don't go for near the high prices

that a true Daguerreotype will sell for. Average selling price

using Tin Type in the title for the past 90 days on eBay was

$25.78 with a 22.93%. Average selling price using Tintype in

the title was $40.86 with an 18.97% sell through. I would

encourage you to spell it both ways in your title.

Since all three of these types of photos were unique one-of-a-kind photographs there would typically be only ONE copy in existence and duplicates were impossible if not cost prohibitive to manufacture. WOW… Is all I can say! No wonder these are so rare and can sell for big bucks. Can't wait to dig through all of the boxes from my grandmother's antique shop because I just know that there is at least one Daguerreotype and numerous tintypes in those .

❀ Hot Tip ❀

The rarer the subject matter and the better the condition, the more money that can be commanded for any of the three types of photos. Examples of rare subjects…sports, military, burial, children, still life (think fruit) and animals.

I was very intrigued by the 1/6 plate mentioned in the Daguerreotype listing for the Miner's wife. I did some research and found that the metal or glass plates were manufactured then sold to the photographer or photography studio. The photographer could then use an entire plate to make a large photograph which would measure 6 ½ by 8 ½". Or as was more common, they would cut up the plate to make multiple smaller photographs. As a result, most tintypes have irregular cuts with crooked and clipped corners. This has definitely been my experience with tintypes and that is why I wanted to show the tintype of the soldier as an example since it was taken out of the case and you could see the uneven cut job. Here are approximate sizes for the plates. Sizes will of course vary based on the manufacturer of the plates but this is a good general guideline. The full plate is the rarest and then the half plate, etc. I have read that there have been examples of double full plates found. Crazy cool! I would LOVE to find one of those. The largest I think I have ever seen is the ¼ plate or about 3 ¼ by 4 ¼”. Full Plate - 6-1/2 x 8-1/2 1/2 Plate - 4-1/4 X 5-1/2 1/4 Plate - 3-1/4 x 4-1/4 1/6 Plate - 2-3/4 x 3-1/4 1/9 Plate - 2 x 2-1/2 Gem tintypes - 1 x 1 or even smaller Gem tintypes were in fashion in the 1860s and often came in card like envelopes. Kind of like those little pictures that would come with your annual school photos that your parents bought and then you would share those little "gems" with your friends. Here is one of mine that cracks me up and one of Indy that is darling ! Also, just found one of my dad that is probably so old it may be a Tintype LOL JK (Laughing out Loud and Just Kidding). Now, just need to find one of the Goose, aka Houston, my brother Lee, my sister Kiki and my mom.

Wow, if my grandmother had only known that all photos would eventually go digital and there would be no more film and no more prints unless you order those prints. And that our phones would take better pictures than most "real" cameras. So crazy how fast technology changes. As I get ready to move back to Bellingham, WA to reopen my grandmother's antique store, I have been diligently going through the boxes I inherited and I know that there are at least tintypes in those boxes, if not the rare Daguerreotypes. So far I have found an interesting drawing that was done in the 1800's that I did get listed. Excited to see what it sells for and I have to thank you all again for encouraging me to write this eBook and renewing my passion for antiques. I love the higher end ticket prices and the amazing history behind all of these special treasures. Here is a peek at that listing.

Damascening Toledo, Spain was a center of Moorish, Spanish and Jewish cultures.Toledo sword blades were famous thoughout the world for their strength, elasticity and craftsmanship, the art was introduced by Moorish craftsmen and it is still carried on. During the Moorish period in Spain (8th to 15th Century) the art of damascening--incrusting gold thread onto steel--was taught to the Spaniards by their Arab conquerors. This was an art acquired by the Moors in the city of Damascus, Asia Minor, famous for its' steel since time immemorial. What does time immemorial even mean? Apparently, it means so far back in time that no one has any record or memory of it happening. Kind of like me not being able to remember what I ate for lunch? NOT! I wrote about Roof Top Antiques earlier in this eBook (when they were kind enough to share one of their listings with us) and now I follow them on Instagram. They have some really awesome posts. I saw this post recently, and couldn't wait to help them out, just like they had done for me earlier As soon as I saw this bird, I just knew it was Toledo ware or Damascening. Check out my post and their response.

Toledo, Spain is the center of damascening, although in modern times several families moved to other cities. This art has always been more or less a family tradition. They always remained faithful to the old standards. Damascening is not an industry in the modern sense of the word, but an art which, they say, cannot be learned. Even today it is confined to those families whos ancestors learned from the Moors--left it as a heritage to their descendents. Consequently the output is rather limited. In recent years, this ancient art has been skillfully copied and made available to the public in larger quantities in the "Arabesque Jewelry." While there is still considerable handwork involved in the enameling, the manufacturing has been greatly simplified by modern methods and by using brass (gold plated) as the basic material instead of the much harder steel. Even so the tasteful designs of this modernized version of damascened jewelry faithfully reflects the beauty of this ancient art.

I visited Toledo when I was living in Spain for my semester abroad with USC and that is why I knew immediately that the bird from Roof Top Antiques was Toledo ware. I brought back many wonderful trinkets from there …earrings, a cross, bracelets and pendants. Here is a photo of some of my pieces. Please insert jewelry.

Houston was lucky enough to visit Toledo when he walked the Camino de Santiago this past summer with Pepperdine. Before he and his group set off on their 500 mile trek from France to the coast of Spain, they were able to make a day trip to Toledo. This is a pretty funny story about Toledo from his professor's blog… "Saturday, June 19th, 2016, found us on the bus at 9am headed to

Toledo for a guided tour. This is where having a recollection of

something can sometimes create issues for you. For years, and I

mean years, groups always meet their guides at the Puerta de

Bisagra, one of the old medieval gates to the city. We arrived at

Bisagra, and no guide. So we drive around a bit and even the driver

is confused. We get out and walk around looking for the guide, as

my notes said to meet him at the mechanical stairs (escalators).

Now, I know what you're thinking: "They have escalators in Toledo?" Yep. I'm kind of amazed too. Here's the deal. Toledo, which is a town of 90,000 people, and which has a population in the walled old city of 6,000 now has to handle 4.5 million tourists a year. That's a lot. All those buses trundling around the tiny streets of the old city is problematic, but like most cities in Spain, Toledo is built on a giant hill, so making tourists climb up and down into the city is equally problematic. The solution? Giant banks of escalators that conveniently take you up and down into and out of the city. I'm a bit horrified by this, but this is "progress." Aaanyway, no guide at the escalator. So I call the company and they get in touch with the guide, who calls and assures me he's at the escalators. The OTHER escalators, that are new. The escalators I didn't know about. Problem solved. He was a great guide, the students enjoyed Toledo, and we happened upon a random crowd in the square outside the cathedral, with full on microphones and yelling and clapping. I distinctly thought "oh great, another strike or protest, or something annoyingly socialist." Nope. Just the Official Guinness Book of World's Records Largest Plate of Ham in the square. No big deal."

Here is a picture of Houston and his group in Toledo. Of course, my kid is the one making the goofy face…like he always does.

the title sold for an average selling price of $103.00 with a

19.73% sell through rate. Items with Toledo ware in the title

(which would include the newer items as well) sold for an

average sales price of $37.55 with a sell through rate of

15.5%. It is definitely worth looking for both new and old

Toledo.

Here is a Google image search to what some of the more modern Toledo ware looks like. Of course there are some older pieces sprinkled in but it is pretty easy to tell the newer ones.

My grandmother gave me a wonderful example of antique damascene Toledo ware. I remember the day she bought this box from Ruth Ellison (another antique dealer) at an antique show back when I was in the 8th grade. It was priced at $25.00 and my grandmother asked for her dealer discount and Ruth (in her Swedish accent) said "It is ALWAYS 10%" never any more. My grandmother always got such a kick out Ruth and her "10%" and she could imitate her Swedish accent perfectly! So my grandmother paid her $22.50 and the box came home with us. I told my grandmother that I admired it and of course, a few months later, there it was wrapped up for me as a Christmas gift under the tree. Can you believe how ornate this piece is?

Check out the base of this same antique box. Amazing that they continued the decoration to the bottom of the piece.

The inside is quite rustic and worn.

I am guessing this box is probably worth about $500. I may sell it someday but not today!

Deldare Pottery The Buffalo Pottery in Rochester, New York, made a highly decorated olive green semi-porcelain DELDARE pottery from 1908 to 1912. This was made to compete with similar English wares such as Doulton, Dvereux and Denholm, and the name DELDARE was coined to sound similar. Lewis H. Brown, the originator, searched through old books to find motifs for decoration. They copied English scenes and painted them in underglaze mineral colors in their first series in 1908 and 1909. Here is a link to the Ye Olden Days pattern by Buffalo China in Deldare ware on Replacements.com. Notice that it shows as being manufactured from 1908 to 1925. Love those high prices!

Condition: Please see photos. Item has been thoroughly cleaned. Looks great - no crazing, chips, repairs or hairline cracks. Very nice and a great, rare piece of Deldare to add to your collection!" "Fallowfield Hunt" scenes were used in their second series dated 1909. Here is a link to the Fallowfield Hunt pattern by Buffalo Pottery in Deldare ware on Replacements. Com. Again, it is stated that this pattern was manufactured from 1908 to 1925. I would beg to differ and suggest that the years for this pattern should be 1909 to 1925.

Title and Description…. "1911 Buffalo Pottery Emerald Deldare Ware Dr. Syntax Plate 8 3/8" Vtg Antique • Please view each photograph for details and dimensions of this vintage Dr.Syntax plate. • No chips / cracks/ repairs. • Light crazing commensurates with age. • Light scratches - the finish remains glossy. • This plate is whimsical and lovely! " The fourth series called "ABINO" and made in 1912 was never as popular as the others and the company gave up Deldare Pottery to make Hotel China. I am sure we have all handled a piece or two of Buffalo restaurant china in our selling on eBay . BTW, I was unable to find an abino piece on replacements or on eBay. This may be the elusive and rarest of the four series. After WorldWar I Buffalo tried again to duplicate this interesting ware, but increased labor and material costs made the retail price prohibitive and it was soon discontinued. DELDARE Pottery is usually marked with the date, a picture of a buffalo and "Buffalo Pottery Emerald Deldare Ware - underglaze". It has very recently become a popular collector's item and brings high prices on today's market. It was made in Art ware as well as table service. The olive green base was achieved by the addition of oxide of chrome to the white body. My grandmother was right on with it being a popular collector's item and bringing high prices!

Since we have discussed the table service pieces in such detail, I would like to now show you a piece that I would consider Art ware. This candle stick recently sold for $1,640.99. The auction started at $499.99 and there were 16 bids.

I did consider this more "art ware" as opposed to "table ware" until I saw the signature…..Abino That elusive fourth pattern that was made in 1912 and I had not been able to find an example to show you. Very interesting!

The seller did add that Abino ware to the listing, but said that it was not Deldare ware. However, I would argue that it was the Abino ware line within the larger umbrella of the Deldare line. What do you think? The super nice seller that shared the cake plate with us was able to add much more detail to what my grandmother had written about Deldare ware. Here is what Jeff shared with me! Fascinating…. "Deldare refers to the body color - created by a mixture of English Ball Clay, Tennessee Ball Clay, and an oxide of chrome. It first appeared in 1906 and 1907, however mass production began in 1908, with the "Fallowfield Hunt" series based on author Cecil Aldin's work, and 'Scenes of English Life in Ye Olden Days, based on the books the Vicar of Wakefield' and 'Cranford.' These two lines were produced in 1909-1910, and the later ('Scenes of English Life...') was produced again after the war, from 1923-1925. Emerald Deldare, with it's art nouveau borders, was only produced in 1911, and much of it was decorated with Dr. Syntax scenes (based on watercolors by Thomas Rowlandson). There were fewer of these pieces produced because the decorations were much more time-consuming to produce - and as a result, these pieces are much more valuable. Abino Ware was intended to supersede Emerald Deldare as the prestige product of the pottery. It was produced in 1911-12 and the name refers to 'Point Abino', the spit of land in Ontario on Lake Erie, about 15 miles West of Buffalo. Only three artists worked on Abino Ware (Ralph Stuart, Charles Harris and W.E. Simpson). Today, it's the most valuable of all forms of Deldare. The Buffalo Pottery eventually became Buffalo China, and later Niagara China. It finally closed due to the impact of Chinese imports in 2013 and there is a movement underway to clear out the old buildings and re start the pottery."

Fantastic information! I can't wait to find some Buffalo Deldare pottery! I am sure you will also be on the lookout for this wonderful line of antique pottery. I LOVE IT! and quite frankly have probably passed some of it up because of my dislike for selling their restaurant china. It is typically a slow mover and takes up a lot of space. There is one set of Buffalo restaurant china that I have done exceptionally well with and it is this pattern. I think it has done so well for me because it was blue and white and has the Navy symbol. I purchased a set of about 15 pieces for $10 in Idyllwild and only have 2 pieces left to sell.

Here is what the Buffalo signature on this piece looks like.

Delft Delft, Holland--a town which rose to prominence in the manufacture of tin-enamelled earthenware in the 17th century and gave its name, in England, to pottery made in this technique in London, Bristol and Liverpool, altho Lambeth and London "delft" is often of much earlier date. The manufacture of tin-enamelled earthenware at Delft was unimportant until the middle of the 17th century. 23 workshops were in existence in 1659. In 1680, the number was possibly 30, employing a total number of workpeople estimated between 1500 and 2000. The 18th century saw a steady decline in the face of rival industries. By 1780 fifteen factories were working, 1794, ten, 1808, seven. By 1850 hardley anything other that the beatuiful wares themselves, survived of this once prosperous industry.

Condition: One professionally repaired rim flake on each charger (now invisible even under black light). A few small rim chips as always on old Delft. Please view the detail photographs." I also asked the seller for some clarification regarding English Delft versus Dutch Delft and whether it was usually signed. Here is what the seller of the chargers wrote back to me… "Hi Lynn, Yes, you may use the photo. Thanks for asking. English Delft was sometimes signed and/or dated, sometimes on the front, sometimes on the back. There was no standard system, and it can be hard to figure out if the name refers to the painter or the buyer. There was no standard system of factory marks. Nadine Carroll Buchanan St Antiques" I did find the reference in her description to the linear stilt marks (from the kiln) on the back of the chargers to be very interesting and a possible way to tell early Delft.

So the Delft type decoration was used by most of the European factories; much of it exported to the United States. The Dutch were not skillful modellers, and as a result the early wares were crude--always a definite faience type of ware and marked with intitials, the name or the mark of the owner. The owner's mark was usually the same as the sign of the factory such as a flower, star peacock, three bells, rose or some other symbol. The early Delft sells for high prices, because if its softness not much as survived. English Delft as compared to Dutch Delft definitely appears to be the more valuable but please keep in mind that Delft is still being exported out of the Netherlands (Holland) in large quantities. Much like Toledo ware from Spain has become, Delft from the Netherlands, is also part of a large tourist "souvenir" business.

Derby Porcelain Derby Porcelain, also known as Crown Derby, was founded in Derby, Derbyshire, England around 1745 by John and Christopher Heath. A few years later, William Duesbury became manager and sole owner. In 1760 he purchased the Longton Hall works and in 1762 secured control of the Bow factory. He bought the Chelsea manufactory in 1770 and operated it in association with Derby until 1784. His son continued after his death in 1786 and in 1811 it was purchased by Robert Bloor and operated until 1848. These names and dates are important to help you understand why there are 31 authentic marks on this porcelain, as well as some very early pieces which are unmarked. Here is a pair of spectacular Duesbury Urns that sold for $2,396.76.

Derby first made soft paste porcelain tablewares, ornamental pieces and figures. They had a reputation for biscuit figures and groups and produced them in quantity, though because of their age, there are few of them to be found today. A distinctive feature was a transparent blue banding, transfer-printed decoration and painted landscapes, figures and fanciful scenes which sometimes included portraits of popular heroes. What the heck is a biscuit figure? From Britannica.com… "When feldspathic glaze and body are fired together, the one fuses intimately with the other. Porcelain fired without a glaze, called biscuit porcelain, was introduced in Europe in the 18th century. It was generally used for figures. In the 19th century biscuit porcelain was called Parian ware." OK, I think I am even more confused. But a Google image search for antique biscuit figure versus antique Parian figure quickly helped me to see what they are talking about and say "aha." The term used today is definitely Parian and it really just means a figurine made in white and unglazed bisque…hence the original term biscuit.

Parian figures are something to be on the lookout for as well.

The average selling price for the past 90 days on eBay was

About 1790, the earlier soft paste porcleain was replaced with bone china. Many elaborate dinner services were decorated with Imari patterns liberally enhanced with gilt. The early porcelain made at Derby was unmarked. After 1770, various marks were the following: A crowned "D" with crossed batons and six dots between the "D" and the crown in blue, crimson or purple.

An anchor traversing the "D" in red or gold is the usual Chelsea-Derby mark of 1770-1784. From about 1755 to 1770 figures were made in the Meissen style and tablewares were made in the style of the Chelsea wares marked with a red anchor and were often decorated with Meissen flowers (as we discussed in the earlier Chelsea section).

Here is the maker's mark on that piece. You may think that I took a terrible blurry picture but that is actually the way the maker's mark looks .

My mom just proofread this section and offered a very helpful suggestion. She said to make sure that I tell you all that it is NOT pronounced Crown Derby, but rather Crown Darby. I told her that I had never heard it pronounced that way in MY LIFE. She explained that grandma always called it "Darby." Of course, I had to check it out and yes, my mom was correct. Here is a link so that you can hear it yourself with both the British pronounciation and the American. I personally LOVE the British way of saying "Daaaaaby."

Enamel ENAMEL is the name given to the hard vitreous compound applied and fused on the surface of metallic articles at a low temperature. The name is also given to the metal article which is ornamented with enamel. The compound is a form of glass consisting of silica, minium and potash, which is melted and mixed with metallic oxides to produce various colors. There are many processes in the manufacture of enemals, but in all of them a glassy paste is applied to the metal base and fired. The enamel covering is in fact a form of glass and the story of the development of enamels is one of constant struggle by the craftsmen to find a method of associating the two materials, glass and metal, so different in their physical properties, in such a way as to form a durable combination. The brilliant results that can be achieved with enamels, perhaps only surpassed by those of stained glass, a somewhat similar combination of glass and metal, must have been a constant spur to the ancient craftsmen, in spite of the difficulties of the process. Enamels were undoubtedly made in the first place as a substitute for precious stones in jewelery. Different colors were used to simulate the stones--for instance, cobalt blue glass was a substitute for lapis lazuli, an opaque bluish-green glass for turquoise and red-brown glass for garnet or carnelian. At first the glass was cut to shape and mounted in the same way as the natural stones, but afterwards it was secured in position by just melting it sufficiently. Later still, cells were prepared into which glass fragments were placed and fired until they melted to form a true enamel.

Some specific types of enamels that we have already discussed include Battersea, Champleve, and Cloisoinne. We will discuss Plique-A-Jour in the "P" section. It seems like in this section my grandmother wanted to highlight the use of enamel within jewelry making, since that was one of her passions. One of her many passions LOL! Here is a color photo of my grandmother sitting on the couch in her living room holding strands and strands of beads that she had strung. This is the same green couch that now resides in my office and I LOVE it! Quite a few of you have actually sat on this couch .

Now that we know why my grandmother loved beads, it is time to do some research on enamel jewelry. Since not many sellers would actually put enamel jewelry in their titles, I had to narrow it down in a different way to do my research on eBay. I chose enamel bracelets and of course "beads" for you know who!

❀ Hot Tip ❀

For the past 90 days on eBay enamel bracelets had an average selling price of $48.38 and a 21% sell through. Those are decent numbers.

Here is a fantastic snake enamel 18k gold bracelet that sold for a best offer of $7,500!

I just used the same gold calculator for this piece and the melt value was $658.31.

❀ Hot Tip ❀

Notice how this item had two bids placed on it but still just sold for the opening bid price of $1,899.00. When I checked the history I could see that the two bids were placed by the same bidder. What this means is that the bidder would have paid MORE, than the starting bid price. Whenever, you have an item and the same buyer bids multiple times, you will know that they will pay more than you are asking. Don't leave money on the table and price high and watch it fly!

When I sell beads from my grandmother's collection I always

try and take the photos so that the beads take up the entire

frame. Just like this seller did with the coiled pictures…this is

the best way to take photos to sell beads and necklaces. Of

course, the buyer will want to see how it looks in a strand,

but the most important photo (I believe) should be the beads

all together.

To wind up this section on enamel, I want to share one listing I have for an Austrian enamel plate so that you can see how enamel transcends all mediums…not just jewelry. Just remember, that enamel is glass fused onto a metal surface.

LOL! I had to laugh…that is the shortest title and description I have shared with you during this entire eBook. That is me…Lynn Dralle…just call me "blunt" or "to the point." OK, before moving on to the next section regarding French enamel, I went to one of my display cabinets and started pulling out all of the French enamel pieces to take photos. Inside that cabinet was a pile of some type of enamel beads or cylinders that I am not sure what they were made for or their purpose. I have never tried listing them for sale and probably won't unless they are worth a small fortune. But I find them extremely interesting and a great transition from enamel beads to French enamel !

What are these? I have never been able to figure it out. They look like they could be beads, or doll house parts or who knows?

Enamel-French or Limoges The art of enameling, particulary champleve, flourished in Limoges, in central France, during the 12th, 13th and later centuries, and is still being made today. Though the classical period extended from the beginning of the 16th century to about 1580, perhaps the best works were produced during the 12th and 13th centuries. Limoges enamels, brilliant in color and strong in composition, were divided into two main periods: the ecclesiastical period, with few examples remaining, and the secular period. They were also divided into two main groups: enameled figures on a plain background, and plain figures on an enameled background. In a French technique, Limoges enamelers added brilliance and depth to certain enamel colors by inserting between two layers of transparent enamel thin foils of silver and gold, called paillons. The first enamelers covered the Paillons with drops of FONDANT (colorless enamel) to achieve the effect of small cabachons. I couldn't believe how many pieces of French enamel I own when it came time to write this section. OK, let's start with my hands down favorite piece. It is a card or cigarette case with an ivory page on the inside to write down notes with a gold pencil. My grandmother bought this in 1969 in the Netherlands as shown on her note…well actually the note is in my handwriting because I asked her where she got it and back then she paid $100. That is A LOT of cash in 1969 dollars. Think about it. I just did the research and $100 in 1969 is worth $680.09. Can you imagine paying that for anything to resell? WOW! My grandma had moxie!

It is interesting to read what my grandmother wrote in her handwriting. She wrote Dolls, Patch Boxes, Seals, Vienna Bronzes, Lynn, Lee, Vi, Joanne etc. My sister wasn't born yet so there was no Kristin on the list, but I almost think this was a European shopping list. She wanted to buy Dolls, Patch Boxes, not sure what the Seals refers to and Vienna Bronzes. The people she was buying for were my brother and I and her two very good customers Vi and Joanne. My brother, my mom, dad and I were on this trip with her when she did buy this. WILD! Here is what this amazing French enamel cigarette case/card case looks like from the front. Isn't it lovely?

Before I show you the back, which is the perfect example of Guilloche, I want to explain Guilloche. Guilloche is a decorative repeating geometric pattern done by a machine on a metal material and placed under a harder exterior. The repetitive patten is engraved and is delicate and precise. It is used quite often on French enamel pieces.

Fairy Lamps Samuel Clark was a famous candle manufacturer and in 1844 Clarke's manufactured night-light candles. To further the use and sale of these candles Samuel Clarke drew supplies of glasses, shades and other fittings to form candle-lamps. He brought to the marked an almost infinite variety of Fairy-lamps. Shades were made of glass, translucent porcelain, silk and parchment. Fairy-lamps were developed for elaborate stands of nickel-plate, brass, cut-glass, porcelain and silver-plate. These stands were designed to carry from one to seven lamps. Ceiling pendants to hold sixteen lamps were also available. Then, as though this were not enough, the firm presented porcelain food pannikins with the Fairy-lamps held in metal stand beneath. These were used for feeding children and invalids. The heat from the Fairy-lamp was used to warm suitable aromatic mixtures which Clarke also supplied under the name, "Bacillus Destroyer" and "Clarke's Pine Inhalation." It is difficult for us to imagine that the items mentioned in the preceding paragraphs were supplied with shades of Burmese and Nailsea glass, tho' they had different names in those days. The catalog speaks of "Queen's Burmese Ware" and "Verre Moire" the picture of the latter glass shows, however, that it is what we now refer to as Nailsea.

The different sizes of Clarke's Fairy-lamps were gauged entirely by the size of the candle they were intended to burn.

The "Pyramid" candle was referred to as the "Burglars Horror," and a verse used to advertise its efficiency reads:

"When nighs are dark, Then think of Clarke, Who's hit the mark precisely, For his night lights, Create light nights, In which you see quite nicely." "Fairy" size candles burned ten hours, the "Fairy-Pyramid" size for six hours, these both had double wicks. About 1887 the business was converted into a Limited Company under the title of "Clarke's Pyramid and Fairy Light Company, Ltd." The business, under Clarke's name, ceased to operate in 1910. The increase in labor costs and the fact that the mechanical techinques had gradually superseded hand craftsmanship, spelled the end of Clarke's Fairy-lamps as we now collect them and know them. The era of Victorian Art-glass was drawing to a close. In the catalogs the old price is crossed off in ink and a new higher price is given; style after style is marked "discontinued." So the march of higher wages and organized labor is etched on old price lists for the future to read. Dorothy Tibbets, authority on Fairy Lamps and author of the books "Clarke's Fairy Lamps" has the following to say in regard to reproductions: "In Europe, England the the Scandinavian coutries, electrification is not nearly as widespread as in America and the use of candle-lamps has never completely ceased, only lessened. The only fairy-lamp the dealer and collector should watch is the pattern known as 'Diamond-point.' This pattern, in Pyramid and Cricklite size has been produced for home consumption steadily since 1890 or perhaps earlier. This is the only type and pattern to my knowledge which has continously been produced." Hobbies, May 1953

My Grandmother is still talking through her notes….( I have news for Mrs. Tibbets--they are making other paterns as well….) OK, I officially LOVE my grandmother even more than I already did….if that is even possible . She called out the authority on Fairy Lamps in her class notes. Why? Because my grandmother was in the trenches….going to gift shows, ordering fairy lamps from Fenton, Imperial, etc and knew the reproductions that were already in market…not going to market, but available to purchase to sell in the CURRENT market. Thanks for cracking me up as I write tonight….Grandma Cheryl Leaf…More affectionately known as Grandma, G or even Abuela. I think G was my favorite nickname for her. Just an FYI, about 50% of these Fairy Lamps pictured I would NOT call antique…although they are about 50 years old, many are made by Fenton and from the 1970's. As far as Fairy Lamps go, I can NOT in all good conscience call a 1970's Fairy Lamp antique. And that green bisque satin owl that you see in the lower right hand middle corner….That is Fenton and I actually had that in my bedroom growing up! UGHHHHHH! I feel so old.

The very plain pressed glass colored fairy lamps do not sell for

as much as the highly decorated Fenton ones, the antique

Burmese or Nailsea ones and the very unique. LOOK for

unique as I suggest you do with everything you purchase .

OMG, after I finished writing this section I found a picture from the old shop…the one with the pink walls where nothing was classified by type or style and one of the display cabinets had a LOT of fairy lamps inside it. BTW, it looks like more Fairy Lamps because of the mirror in the back LOL. I also saw a Peking glass base, Evesham dinnerware, rosewood figurines, antique lamps, satin glass, cups & saucers, Royal Copenhagen Easter plaques, Bing & Grondahl, stretch glass and Toby jugs. What a wonderful testament to the amazing items my grandmother used to sell in her store. And the WONDERFUL fact that she imported so many of these great items from Europe back in the 1960's. So excited to leave for Europe in a few days and retrace some of her foot steps…or make some new foot prints and bring back some AWESOME things to sell on eBay.

OMG, I just sold a cranberry candy dish base that had applied rigoree. I didn't even realize it until it had sold but, it was a FAIRY LAMP BASE…..WOW. What a crazy coincidence and thank goodness the lady who bought it let me know that it was a fairy lamp base because I have another one that I just changed the description for and raised the price. WOW! It had been listed since February of 2012 and that is why I had it marked at 50% off. It probably would have sold A LOT sooner and for money if I had identified it correctly.

Findlay or Onyx Glass While it appears to be plated (or cased), it is really homogeneous. Like the shaded opalescent, the opalescence was achieved by quickly cooling the bulb of sensitive opal glass melt, then reheating at the glory hole. Two or three additional platings were applied over the original bulb of opalescent glass from the same pot of metal, each developing in color as the first but with a different degree of opalescence. In this way the inner casing, being reheated the most, developed a denser color. The pattern-molded article after being properly annealed, had the raised floral design painted in a platinum luster, then fired in a muffle to fix the stain. The density of color was determined by the amount of platinum luster applied. Onyx glass was made in Ruby or pink, amber, orange, orchid and purple, and green. Avoid trying to polish the luster with abrasives or subjecting them to excessive washings. This beautiful and interesting glass was made in Findlay, Ohio in 1899 and many collectors refer to it as Findlay Glass. I actually remember my grandmother always calling this glass Findlay Onyx and that is how I know it to be termed. We handled quite a lot of it back in the antique store but most was a very pale yellowish amber color. I don't remember ever seeing the vibrant colored pieces she writes about.

Every piece that I just researched on eBay was the same beige color I just spoke about. The average selling price for the past 90 days was $100.93 with an 8.44% sell through rate. The ASP is great…sell through not so great. There are always trade offs between ASP and sell through rate. Don't forget that .

From my research it appears that they mainly made toothpick holders, tumblers, sugar bowls, creamers, celery vases, covered butter dishes, syrup pitchers and sugar shakers in this pattern. Here is a current listing for a wonderful piece of colored Findlay Onyx in a spooner shape. For those of you who don't know what a spooner is, it was originally made as a table decoration in Victorian times to hold the silver spoons on the table to show that you were ready to host guests . Seriously? Can you believe that?

Flow Blue Also called Flow or Flown Flowing Blue is a stone china usually decorated with oriental (Asian) patterns. It was first made in Staffordshire England in 1825. The flowing color is produced by action of volatile chlorides on ceramic colors. The designs are applied to the china surface with ceramic colors, and in the kiln they are exposed to a chlorinated atmosphere. Kind of reminds me of an indoor swimming pool where the chlorine in the air is so thick you can smell it. I turned out for the swim team (yes it was called turned out, not practice back in the day…my kids make so much fun of me when I ask them if they have "turn out" for a sport after school). I hated the indoor pool at the YMCA where Sehome High School's practice was held. I can still smell that chlorine. I lasted one week on the swim team which consisted of doing intense laps and in the process lost 10 pounds. I didn't need to lose 10 pounds in high school. Oh, those were the days! I decided then and there that I would rather work at my grandmothers "fun" antique store every day after school instead of "turning out" for the swim team. Tennis was another story! I love tennis and achieved my goal of making varsity by senior year! Here I am in our yearbook as a varsity tennis player! Yayaya!

But back to that chlorine smell in the air and the chlorinated atmosphere required to make Flow Blue. Makes sense doesn't it? Like a swimmer cutting though blue water in a flowing manner. The vapor causes the color to spread and blur. Flowing brown and Flowing purple were also made. Cobalt oxide is used for blue and nickel oxide for brown. Some of the well-known names you will find are Kyber & Tonquin by Adams (impressed), Davenport with anchor (impressed), E & J Mayer, Wedgwood, Ridgway (printed stoneware, J R or J W R), J & J Alcock and T. Walker and many many others including a company from Holland. Flowing blue was a popular ware and a great amount was made. A late pattern was made in Morning glory and marked "Lancaster." Flow blue is the term that we all use today instead of the "flowing blue". Kind of like "turning out" versus "practice" LOL.

I currently have only 9 listings on eBay with Flow Blue in the title. You know why? This stuff sells and will continue to sell when other antique items fall out of favor. Do you want to know why? Because anything in Blue and White is classic and is always a favorite. Just my personal opinion, but blue and white…whether linens (I was the comforter buyer for May Department Stores LA and had a $4 million budget), clothing or dinnerware…Blue and White is the KING or QUEEN However you want to view it. Frankoma Pottery I know we talked a bit about Frankoma in the Christmas Plate section, but I couldn't resist adding this tidbit from my grandmother's handwritten notes. It cracked me up. Owner/artist John Frank's Pottery in Sapulpa, Oklahoma has been in business there since 1938. They applied for a permit in Tulsa but were refused. Kind of like my grandmother and her conditional use permit for the shop. She wanted to add on a huge addition to make the shop with one large floor of over 2,500 square feet for store space. The city refused saying she could only keep the store in the small old house, but could build an addition for her to live in. She built that addition and it was HUGE. She also left the main living area very large and only included a tiny bedroom, bathroom and kitchen at the far corner because it was her dream to someday move the shop into that area.

Here is a photo of the original TINY house and shop. I couldn't find a picture of it when it was pepto pink with turquoise trim. Darn it!

Page 94: ~ 1 ~ Antiques from A to Z - thequeenofauctions.comthequeenofauctions.com/AA2Z/pdfs/a2z-volume4-def.pdf · Antiques from A to Z ... The Unofficial Guide to Making Money on eBay-Wiley

Here is the after photo which shows the original TINY house with the HUGE addition built next door during one of our "World Famous Yard Sales" and trust me….they were World Famous!

We did accomplish my grandmother's dream around 1995 when we broke through a wall into the addition (unbeknownst to the city ) and expanded the shop. My grandmother LOVED that we were getting away with this! That room became our Christmas room and it was year round Christmas! We carried Midwest of Cannon Falls, Dept. 56, Yankee Candles, Sadek, Crabtree & Evelyn, Manhattan Toy Company and many other wonderful vendors.

In the far right corner you can see part of the door (and a mail slot…remember those?) that she had put in place to be able to use that entire new addition for the shop. But the city just wouldn't allow it, so we created our "own zoning" rules 20 years later . Back to John Frankoma and his turn down in Tulsa. On he and his wife's way home, they stopped at a restaurant to eat and after telling the owner they were turned down in Tulsa, he replied "What the hell is wrong with Sapulpa?" Their earthenware is made of native and clay and is beautiful, distinctive and practical. John Frank has developed special glazes. We talked about the Green glaze in a previous section, but I just had to add the crazy fun history about the evolution of Cheryl Leaf's home and shop and now a few more fun Frankoma facts.

My question is, how would you know that this is Frankoma? There was no makers mark and on most of the early figural pieces there weren't any marks. I guess I will answer my own question. Google image searches are my best friends. We can visually learn so much in a matter of seconds with this WONDERFUL tool. Here is a Google image search to Frankoma Ivory.

Take some time to study these different shapes and become familiar with them so when out sourcing you can spot one from "a mile away."

Fry Foval Art Line The versatile H.C. Fry Glass Company operated in Rochester, Pennsylvania from 1901 until about 1933. Their production included oven glass, cut glass, lead blanks for the cut glass trade, motion picture lenses (How cool is that? I did not know this ), table tumblers, stem ware and cylinders for gasoline pumps. The company employed between 450 to 500 workers at their peak production period. Many of them were Swedish. In 1922 the Fry Glass Company filed a patent application for a HEAT RESISTING GLASS suitable for oven ware. The cloudy condition resulted from the suspension of aluminum at a given temperature. PEARL OVEN GLASS was made into custard cups, ramekins, pie plates, casseroles, biscuit trays, and various other pieces. The rough edges were smoothed as they came out of the molds. The signature was pressed into the bottom with the words FRY OVENGLASS and sometimes the number of the piece with its size and sometimes patent dates. PEARL ARTWARE was made with the same formula as the ovenglass, but it was blown rather than pressed into molds. The word "FOVAL" was a coined word using the letter "F" from FRY, "OV" from OVENGLASS, "A" from ART, and "L" from LINE. Here is that typewritten page from my grandmother's notes.

Page 99: ~ 1 ~ Antiques from A to Z - thequeenofauctions.comthequeenofauctions.com/AA2Z/pdfs/a2z-volume4-def.pdf · Antiques from A to Z ... The Unofficial Guide to Making Money on eBay-Wiley

PEARL ARTWARE, or "GOLDEN GLOW", has a color of PEARL BLUE where no other color has been added. It is however, also found in pink, blue and green. Other colors would be considered rare. Most of it has a fiery opalescence when held to the light. Here is a Google image search to Fry Foval. Isn't it beautiful?

Much of the FRY FOVAL is composed of at least 2 colors. The stem, rim, base, handle, wafer or finial is often an almost transparent to opaque green, blue or pink. It may also be found with applied colored reeding, iridized, a pulled drape pattern of another color or a colored crystal lining. It is sometimes cut and engraved, with applied prunts, enamel trim and gold or silver overlay.

A firm of "Rockwell" decorated some of this glass and can be found with their name on the bottom. (This firm, however is still in business, so ever piece of signed "Rockwell" certainly cannot be attributed to Fry!) My grandmother wrote this back in the 1960's. Rockwell was well known for their sterling silver overlay. Their pieces are BEAUTIFUL. Here is a Rockwell silver overlay vase that recently sold for $203.50 on eBay. The photos are courtesy of this very kind seller who won the eBay 2016 Family Business Shine Award. How cool is that? But back to Fry Foval and my grandmother's notes . PEARL ARTWARE is found in candlesticks, toothpick holders, vases, compotes, tazzas, perfumes, tumble-ups, plates, syrups, creamers, baskets, bowls, wines, goblets, tumblers, teapots, trays, finger bowls, cups and saucers, lemonades, light globes, shades, lamps, punch cups, demitasse cups and saucers, sherbets and juice glasses. It may be found with a pontil mark or with one that is rough, smoothed or polished. About 1 piece in 500 was ever signed with an acid etched signature like this.

WTF is a Tazza and a Tumble UP? I do know what a Finger bowl is but not those two. For those of you who don't know, a finger bowl was a Victorian invention that would be placed at each persons table setting for them to dip their fingers in water between messy courses that were eaten with your hands.

Page 104: ~ 1 ~ Antiques from A to Z - thequeenofauctions.comthequeenofauctions.com/AA2Z/pdfs/a2z-volume4-def.pdf · Antiques from A to Z ... The Unofficial Guide to Making Money on eBay-Wiley

OK, a Tumble Up now makes complete sense! Here is a Google image search for Tumble Up. Of course, it is some type of pitcher, decanter or carafe used to hold liquid (most likely water) that has a tumbler for a lid so that you can easily pour yourself a glass of water. Cool! My mom just explained to me that most tumble ups were kept by the bedside so that a drink of water would be easily accessable without leaving the bed. Personally, I keep two Starbucks plastic thermal tumblers with ice and water next to my bed for the same reason. LOL. Maybe I should get myself a tumble up ?

Not sure what that wind surfing dude is doing in my tumble up search, but whatever! A Tazza is a shallow base or cup on a pedestal and comes from the Italian word for cup. It is often used to describe compotes. Here is an eBay search for Tazza with the highest priced items first. Interesting new word….at least to me!
