COMPLIMENTARY COPY Published Weekly By Joel Sater Publications www.antiquesandauctionnews.net VOL. 43, NO. 36 FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 7, 2012 orphy Auctions’ June 22-23 auction was devoted exclusively to things that go bang in the night – the antique and vintage fireworks collection of Pennsylvanian George Moyer. The 40-year assemblage of rare antique and vintage firecracker packs and labels; salutes, sparklers and other pyrotechnical rarities went out with a flourish during the two-day sale that realized $438,000. All prices quoted are inclusive of 20% buyer’s premium. The sale took place at Morphy’s Denver, Pennsylvania, Gallery. The Moyer collec- tion had been widely publicized in the main- stream media, both in the USA and abroad. Feature articles appeared in The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Washington Times and Forbes.com, and there was coverage on at least two television networks. “This level of media attention might not have seemed so unusual had it been a collection of Picassos,” said Morphy Auctions CEO Dan Morphy, “but we’re talk- ing about firecrackers – ephemeral objects that cost as little as one cent when they were first mar- keted.” Morphy’s “one cent” comment was in reference to what collectors call “penny packs,” which were manufactured to provide cheap thrills for financially challenged Fourth of July celebrants. In particular, these auction lots proved a penny-wise investment for Moyer. “There were over 40 packs in the sale that sold for individual prices of $1,000 or more, and several were penny packs,” said Morphy. “Not a bad return on George’s money.” Moyer started his collection at age 10, picking up wrappers that his older friends discarded after removing the crackers. The top lot of the sale was a rare salesman’s display board containing 20 sample sparklers, caps, and firecracker packs. It fin- ished at the midpoint of its esti- mate range, at $7,200. A second salesman’s display board contain- ing 12 fireworks samples from the R.F. Company of Rochester, N.Y., was considered historically significant because it presented an especially diverse overview of the firm’s product range, includ- ing elusive pinwheels and “bombs.” Against an estimate of $1,000 to $2,500, the assortment sold for $4,800. The appeal of firecracker packs, with their vividly colored labels and fantasy themes, cross- es over into many other collecting genres. Packs with depictions of athletes, soldiers, sci-fi and pop culture icons; Native Americans, clowns, cowboys, and Christmas characters are pursued by a wide range of collectors who do not specifically pursue fireworks. A Balfour’s 40-piece pack of “supercharged flash- light crackers” with a depiction of early, open- wheel Indy-style racers competing on a racetrack no doubt received a boost from automotive collec- tors. The pack raced past the checkered flag with a winning bid of $3,900. A packet of 32 Tally Ho! Firecrackers adorned with a vibrant image of riders on horseback, flanked by hunting dogs in full stride, finished at $3,300; while a Greyhound pack embla- zoned with the image of a sleek hound bolting across the countryside more than doubled its high estimate to reach $2,280. Manufactured by Tung Fong, a 24-pack of Jackass Brand Firecrackers from the company’s “Lucky Series” advertised its product as being “the cracker with a kick.” Possibly the only extant example, the lot was entered with a $500 to $1,000 estimate but was bid to $2,700. Another pack that may be the only known example of its type was the one advertising “Crax Boy Loudest Flashlight Crackers.” Executed in appealing primary col- ors, the label featured a knock-off character nearly identical to the Whitman’s Sampler candy messenger boy. But instead of choco- lates, Crax Boy deliv- ers packets of fire- works. Estimated at $500 to $1,000, the Crax Boy pack was bid to $3,025. The pack that Moyer said he found hardest to part with was the one called “Marine,” with a depiction of US Marines in a battle- field. “I had a senti- mental attachment to it because I, myself, served in the Marine Corps,” he said. The pack of 70 crackers – possibly a unique survivor – achieved $3,000. Seldom seen, a 16-pack of fire- crackers titled “The Wizard” had bidding paddles waving in the air. The brightly colored label depicts an Oriental version of the Wizard of Oz emerging from a plume of smoke, emit- ted by a large, upright fire- cracker. Below, looking on apprehensively, are Dorothy, the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion characters. Estimated at $200 to $400, the pack followed the Yellow Brick Road all the way to a $1,440 bid. With crossover appeal to col- lectors of space-theme col- lectibles, a 1937 pack of Buck Rogers “Disintegrators,” with an image of the futuristic hero in action, blasted its presale image of $400 to $800, bringing in $540. The image on the label (no pack) for “Round One” firecrack- ers could be described as ahead of its time, since it was issued a good half-century before Hilary Swank won an Oscar (in 2004) for her role in “Million Dollar Baby.” The firecracker label has a cartoon-like drawing of a woman boxer, dressed in shorts and a hal- ter top, wearing boxing gloves and sitting confidently in her cor- ner of a boxing ring. The label knocked down a winning bid of $1,020. The pack known as “Evergreen” features a large, snow-laden conifer and was described in the auction catalog as possibly being the only known example. Containing 16 fire- crackers, it appears to have been manufactured specifi- cally for “Northwest Jobbers Supply – State of Washington, U.S.A.” It was bid to the midpoint of its estimate, settling at $1,920. Other top lots included: Merry-Go-Round, $3,000; Mercury, $2,280; and China Goo Boy [probably an aber- ration of “Good Boy”] – $2,400. The image of a Native-American brave adorned the label on a pack of “Three Feathers” crackers, which sold for $1,440. Although many packs fetched amazing prices, there were plenty of tempting items for the beginning and inter- mediate collector. A great- looking 32-pack in vibrant primary colors featured an unauthorized image of Batman, complete with bat wings and the word “Bang!” exploding from the character’s chest. It sold within estimate for $180. Another pocket pleaser was “Home Run,” a 20-pack with the image of a baseball player at home plate, poised to swing the bat, and a full crowd in the Vintage Fireworks Collection Pops At Morphy’s (Continued on page 2) M M Top lot of the sale: salesman’s sample board containing 20 sample sparklers, caps and firecracker packs, $7,200. Dan Morphy commentedthat the bidding dynamic inthe June 22-23 sale was con-trary to that seen in mostother Morphy sales. “Themajority of bidding came inthe form of left bids on thewebsite. Internet live biddingthrough Morphy Live wassecond, and the phones werethird. But regardless of howcollectors chose to bid, theywere obviously eager to par-ticipate. They realized theopportunity this auction pre-sented. There is only oneGeorge Moyer collection.”

After the sale, Moyerremarked that he found it

“very gratifying” that so many fel-low collectors had taken the time to

speak with him atthe auction. “Ihad a great timemeeting every-one and signedmany, many auc-tion catalogs, copies of the fire-works book Iwrote, and fire-works posters. Itmade all thoseyears of collect-ing worthwhile.”

This week’s item is aMoser style glass moonvase. It dates from the late19th century and it is 7-1/2inches high.

The Moser GlassCompany was founded in1857 by LudwigMoser inBohemia pro-ducing fineq u a l i t yglassware.Enameledd e c o r a -tion isone of theb e s tk n o w nstyles oftheir waresmade at theend of the19th cen-tury, but caution must be

taken as several otherBohemian glass housesmade pieces in a similarstyle.

Many of the Moserpieces are actually marked

and so unmarked piecesmay well be the

work of one ofthe othermanufactur-ers. I havevalued thisas a Moserpiece, but itwould needto be han-dled to con-

firm this, if itis not by

Moser then thevalue at auctionwould be closerto $150.

Value: $150 to $250.

The main building willhouse all periods of antiquesand accessories, in uniqueroom settings, all under theroof of a 19th-century build-ing located at 48 North MainStreet, in Mullica Hill. “Our3rd Floor,” says Rocco Doto,co-owner of Kings RowAntiques, “will have a themeof ‘Toys in the Attic,’ and willbe devoted to antique dolls, toys, trains and children’s fur-nishings.” The CarriageHouse located in the rear ofthe main shop, will be used forantique architectural itemslike windows, doors, shutters, hardware and exterior decorat-ing items and will be a “Past-perfect” Antique showcase. The “Potting Shed,” locatedadjacent to the CarriageHouse, will offer garden itemscontaining everything fromclay pots to potting tables. (Itwill be opening in the spring.)

“We are very excited aboutthe opportunity to expand onthe north end of town to bringto our dedicated community, and to our out-of-town follow-

ers that continue to visit usyear after year, an additionalstop.” “We also look forwardto continuing to help makeMullica Hill a ‘destination’ - ajourney to the ‘Mile LongAntique Country’” saysRocco. Rocco and his wife,Coleen, have been the proudowners of Kings Row foralmost 8 years. The coupledecided to expand in responseto the growing question, yearafter year, of many of KingsRow’s customers: “Is theupstairs opened?” BothColeen and Rocco hope thatthis will satisfy the thrill of thehunt and add to the destinationspot where satisfied customerscan say that they found thatperfect antique right here inMullica Hill.

Kings Court Antiquesanticipates a soft opening onSeptember 8th, 2012, with itsofficial grand opening to beheld on October 13th, duringone of two Ribbon CuttingCeremonies, in conjunctionwith the rebirth of “The Loft”formerly known as Murphy’sLoft, located right across thestreet at 50 North Main. AUCTION SALE BILLS

Many regard the tri-statearea surroundingPhiladelphia as the tenderloinfor antiques and fine art in theMid-Atlantic region. Thepedigreed furniture, paint-ings, jewelry and silver sofrequently found in homesfrom Philadelphia’s MainLine to suburban New Jerseyand Maryland, are soughtafter from coast to coast. Forthis reason, Stephenson’sAuctioneers’ annualSeptember Antiques &Decorative Arts Auction is anevent that unfailingly attractsa large and loyal following.Stephenson’s is located inSouthampton, Pennsylvania.

Scheduled this year forFriday, September 7,Stephenson’s fall sale willfeature approximately 600lots of quality antiques, art-works and vintage col-

lectibles from private resi-dences and collectionssourced in and aroundGreater Philadelphia. Theselling will begin with 100smalls and decorative objects, including crystal and glass;china, pottery and porcelains.A striking highlight of theopening section is aNorthwood carnival glasspunchbowl set comprised ofmore than a dozen pieces inthe Grapes and Cable pattern.Additionally, the saleincludes a NorthwoodWishbone water set,Waterford crystal and a largeset of Fostoria “Navarre”stemware that has been keptin the original wrappers since1950. With the holiday sea-son just around the corner, thetiming will be right to pur-chase Wedgwood dinner-ware, which also will be

offered.The decorative arts cate-

gory is rounded outby Oggetti (Italy)art glass signed by L.(Luigi) Onesto, aglass paperweightcollection, and sev-eral exceptionallylarge Lladrop o r c e l a i n s(Valencia, Spain)from a Delaware

County estate. “These Lladrosare not the type you normallysee. They are very impres-sively sized,” said CindyStephenson, owner ofStephenson’s Auctioneers.“The piece titled ‘In theGondola’ is 17-3/4 incheshigh by 31 inches wide, andthe one titled ‘A RickshawRide’ is 11 inches tall by 15inches wide, exclusive of itsbase, which is included.”

The unmistakable softglow of old silver is evident inthe nine sets of Americansterling flatware, led by aWallace “Grand Baroque”105-piece service for twelve. The suite is stored in its prop-er chest and includes manydesirable serving pieces.Estimate: $2,600 to $3,200.

Among the other notable sil-ver lots are five sterling teaand coffee services, includinga heavy and ornate Durgin

set; a pair of silver hol-lowware table pheas-ants, and variousEnglish and Russiansilver pieces.

“ I nparticular,there hasbeen a lotof interestin the

Russian silver spoons in thissale,” said Stephenson.“There are five spoons, eachwith niello and gilding, madeby the 19th-century silver-smith and assay master ViktorSavinsky.”

AUCTION SALE BILLS

The convivial atmosphereof a century-old corner tavernwelcomes visitors toMorphy’s southeasternPennsylvania gallery in therun-up to the big September21 to 22 sale of AdolfGrenke’s breweriana and beercan collection. More than 40years in the making, theapproximately 4,000-pieceGrenke collection will be sold

in its entirety and withoutreserve over the course of thetwo-day event in Morphy’sDenver, Pennsylvania, gallery.

At the core of the remark-able single-owner collection -which also includes 400 beertaps and a selection of adver-tising signs, artwork and pro-motional items - are some500 antique and vintage beer

cans, many of which areexceedingly rare. “A fewkey examples are expectedto exceed $50,000 each,”said Morphy AuctionsCEO Dan Morphy.

A former plasticsindustry executive andpresident of an elevatorcompany, Grenke becameaware of beer cans as acollectible in 1972 after hiswife took their two youngsons to an educational lec-ture sponsored by theparks department in hissuburban Chicago neigh-borhood.

“The fellow makingthe presentation was aMeister Brau salesman. Hewas there to encouragekids to collect beer cansand even handed out sam-

Morphy’s enlisted the ser-vices of noted brewe-riana expert DanMorean ofwww.breweri-ana.com toappraise andcatalog thebeer canportion ofthe sale.M o r e a n ,who hasbought andsold some ofthe mostimportant beercan collections ofthe past few years, said the Grenke collection is“the first major beer can col-lection to be auctioned otherthan on eBay - and not thatmany major ones have hiteBay, either.”

Collectors look for rarity,

appealing graphics and supe-rior condition. Many

cans in the Grenkecollection meet all

three criteria,Morean said.The onlyknown exam-ple of an

ultra-desirable Gibbons Bocklow-profile cone-top can isestimated at $30,000 to$50,000. Two differentKrueger Bock cans ($15,000to $20,000; $18,000 to

ple cans,” Grenke recalled. But it wasn’t until later, whileon a family vacation in Texas, that Grenke himself caughtthe collecting bug.

“We were on our way tothe Alamo when one of mysons spotted beer cans onthe side of the roadnear a golf course.I was all dressedup, but wepulled over, and soon Iwas in the

mud pulling up beercans right along with mysons,” Grenke said with alaugh.

After a few years of col-lecting and watching theprices escalate on vintagecans, Grenke joined theBCCA and Worldwide BeerCan Collectors, which heknew would open doors to amuch wider network of col-lectors through club meetingsand conventions. He becameknown as a serious buyer whowould pay the price to own

the rarest cans, but ironically,he only rarely drank beer.

Grenke’s collectionincludes many cans chosenfor inclusion in top referencebooks because they were thebest of all known examples.

“Adolf was always a con-dition collector,”

Morphy said.“Whenever a

new book onbeer cans wasin the works,i n v a r i a b l ythe authorand photog-rapher would

end up atAdolf’s home.”

G r e n k e ’ sfavorite cans include

a rare Apache Exportcan from Arizona - avery desirable low-

profile cone-top can withNative American imagery. Itis one of only five or sixknown and is expected tomake $25,000 to $35,000 atauction. Grenke also favorsan olive drab Peter HandMeister Brau can that is theonly known example of itstype. “During World War II,Meister Brau sent their beeroverseas to United States sol-diers,” Grenke said. “As faras anyone knows, this is thesole survivor.” It is estimatedat $12,000 to $18,000.

The Grenke collec-tion includes spec-tacular 19th- andearly 20th-century

features animage of threehorses jumping a fence, maywell have been a salesman’ssample, as no particular prod-uct is shown on it.

An excellent assortmentof beer tap knobs will beoffered, as well as a selection

of trays, knobs and “smalls,”including promotional but-tons, watch fobs, match safesand pocketknives.Breweriana expert Les Jones, who cataloged the items, explained that the smallswere company giveaways orgiven to customersat bars, while oth-

A l s oincluded inthe collectionis arguablythe finestknown assem-blage of pre-P r o h i b i t i o nbeer glasses frombreweries in Chicagoand other Illinoiscities. Each of the 200

glasses had the name of abrewery or type of beer acid-etched onto its thin, fineglass, so relatively few sur-vived over time, Jones said.A grouping of pre-Prohibition brewery or beer-

branded steins will also besold.

Dan Morphy remarked:“This collection is absolutelyintact and unpicked, andeverything is a condition 9,9-1/2 or better. Everyonewho has come in to the

what really sets this collec-tion apart from anything elseout there.”
