Consistently focused on professionals: Bosch Power Tools relies on connectivity Increased productivity and efficiency in day-to-day work
Seven new connected measuring and power tools for professionals
Cloud-based system, from products through to inventory management
Exclusive insights at the “Bosch Blue Innovation Summit” in Frankfurt
Frankfurt/Main – Bosch Power Tools relies on connected products to make day-
to-day work easier for professionals and increase the productivity and efficiency
of each individual tradesperson. “The construction and trade sectors are under
extreme pressure due to the continuous demands for high planning and execu-
tion quality,” explained Ralph Dammertz, Senior Vice President of Professional
tools for industrialized markets at Bosch Power Tools, at the “Bosch Blue Innova-
tion Summit” in Frankfurt. “It is here that our connected products and services for
professionals are being used: By linking a smartphone to a tool via Bluetooth,
tradespeople can optimize their work processes and rule out errors such as
those caused by the manual transfer of measuring values.”
Consistently focused on professionals
From autumn 2016, Bosch Power Tools will be offering a total of seven new con-
nected tools: A combi laser, two screwdrivers, two combi drills, an angle grinder
and a workplace light. Two laser measures and a thermo detector which, when
connected to mobile terminals, facilitate documentation are already available.
The tools are consistently tailored to users’ needs. “This is what we call our ‘User
Experience’ approach. We involve users in the product development process
from the outset and adapt the function and design of our tools to their needs,”
according to Dammertz. This is how Bosch Power Tools produces practicable in-
novations that are specifically targeted at areas where professionals have previ-
ously felt support was lacking. “From our analyses, we know, for example, that
tradespeople today only spend 30 percent of their working hours performing ac-
tual construction activities. The rest of the time is dedicated to preliminary or fol-
low-up tasks such as preparing the vehicle or preparatory measurements. One
solution that we therefore provide professionals with is ‘TrackMyTools’ – our
PI9287

cloud-based inventory management system, which is designed to help compa-
nies manage and locate their working equipment.” Via the tool's localization data
saved in the cloud, tradespeople know where their tool is at all times and whether
they have all the necessary equipment with them when attending a call-out or
working on site. This saves time – which the tradesperson can then spend on
productive activities such as screwing or drilling using the new Connectivity
screwdrivers and combi drills.
Innovative cordless technology simplifies work for tradespeople
“We are convinced that we will be able to continue offering tradespeople better
solutions in the future which, through networking, will provide more added value
– from the individual configuration through to remote diagnosis,” explained
Dammertz. In addition to utilizing technical capacities, Bosch is constantly deve-
loping them to benefit the user. Wolfgang Hirschburger, Vice President Enginee-
ring for professional tools in industrialized markets, demonstrated solutions which
Bosch has already successfully established on the market. The introduction of
lithium-ion batteries in power tools represented a milestone. This technology en-
abled smaller, more compact and at the same time high performance tools to be
developed and resulted in the 10.8 V class for professionals being brought to the
market in 2005.
Bosch is also the world’s first supplier to enable the advantages of inductive
energy transfer to be used with cordless tools. “Our 'Wireless Charging System',
with which we have provided tradespeople with new ways of working efficiently
using cordless tools, resulting in time and cost savings, has been in use since
2014,” according to Hirschburger. He claimed that the potential of cordless tech-
nology is far from exhausted. Since February this year, Bosch has been offering
the GEN 230V-1500 Professional mobile socket: Thanks to its innovative lithium
iron phosphate technology, it stores up to 1,650 watt hours of energy and pro-
vides a constant output of 1,500 watts – all without a mains supply. The latest
example of innovative cordless technology from Bosch is the high-performance
battery GBA 18V 6,3 Ah EneRacer Professional, which will be available from au-
tumn 2016. An improved power connector within the cells ensures lower internal
resistance, which means that higher currents can be drawn from the cells over a
longer time. The result is an increase in available power in a compact battery.
New technologies for user protection
“Rather than developing individual solutions, we think in systems,” explained
Hirschburger. To do this, in the field of sensor systems, for example, Bosch
Power Tools uses the expertise of other business areas such as Bosch Sen-
sortec and the Bosch automotive division. “We enable tradespeople to use this
expertise, such as in our ‘KickBack Control’ function for screwdrivers and rotary
PI9287

hammers.” Bosch sensors – which are used especially for this purpose – can re-
duce the risk of injury caused by kickback and are a good example of how new
technologies are being applied in the interests of user protection. User comfort is
also playing an increasingly important role. With the new Connectivity products
for professionals, Bosch is well-positioned: Tradespeople can, for example, indi-
vidually configure their connected tools and save their settings for future tasks.
Intelligent displays directly on the tool, known as HMIs (Human Machine Inter-
faces), will also make working easier. “The long-term goal is to network all of
Bosch’s professional power tools and thus to offer users added value.”
“It's in your hands” – Users are the focus of communication
The quality of professional power tools from Bosch is based on a precise analy-
sis of the user’s needs, their day-to-day work and permanent dialog with profes-
sionals. In terms of communication too, there will be increased focus on the user
in the future: “It's in your hands” – this is the main idea behind the new brand
communication which Bosch presented at the “Bosch Blue Innovation Summit”.
Martina Ehrmann, Regional President Europe and Asia for professional tools in
industrialized markets, explained what Bosch means by this. “The professional
has the expertise – we provide them with the right products and services to opti-
mally use this expertise and thus to perform their activities as efficiently as possi-
ble.” Bosch considers itself to be a partner for trade and industry. “For us, 'User
Experience' means that we bundle together our expertise and that of the profes-
sionals to achieve a common purpose: Optimum work results and maximum
productivity.”

Increased efficiency and productivity: Bosch expands Connectivity system for professionals Networking provides improved performance and results
Seven new networked measuring and power tools
Clear information for users, from products through to inventory management
Connected products can be configured and controlled using a single app
Bosch is consistently expanding its expertise in connected measuring and power
tools for professionals: From autumn 2016 onwards, a total of ten networkable
tools – seven new tools and three that are already on offer – will be available for
tradespeople, from laser measures with integrated Bluetooth modules through to
angle grinders. The power tools are compatible with the cloud-based “TrackMyTools”
inventory management system, which is designed to help companies manage
and locate their working equipment. With these tools, Bosch is responding to the
trend towards digitization in the trades and is offering professionals a complete
system, from products through to inventory management, that can be used to op-
timize procedures and enables all tradespeople to work more productively. Users
of networked power tools from Bosch can for instance personalize their tools via
an app, set up a custom configuration for them and save these settings for future
work. Users also receive information regarding the status of their tools as well as
tips for troubleshooting, for instance if one of their tools shuts down due to over-
heating. In addition, the app provides clear information about when and for how
long each tool has been used. In some cases, the app also functions as a remote
control, enabling tradespeople to save time and unnecessary walking.
Overview of all connected measuring and power tools
Bosch already offers connected measuring solutions with the GLM 50 C Profes-
sional and GLM 100 C Professional laser measures and the GIS 1000 C Profes-
sional thermo detector, which can be coupled with mobile terminals to facilitate
documentation. This range is now being expanded with the inclusion of a combi
laser with a rotating mini-tripod that can be controlled remotely using a smart-
phone: the GCL 2-50 C Professional. This provides tradespeople with a conve-
nient way to align the laser – even when using a ladder.

The new networked products in the area of professional power tools include an
18-volt drill/driver and an 18-volt combi drill in the ‘robustseries’– the GSR 18 V-
75 C Professional and the GSB 18 V-75 C Professional. Two more tools, this
time in the ‘dynamicseries’, will follow in January 2017 – the GSR 18 V-60 C Pro-
fessional and the GSB 18 V-60 C Professional. These tools enable tradespeople
to configure custom settings for their tools and adapt them to suit specific tasks –
a particularly useful feature for challenging applications. Users can, for instance,
set the ‘KickBack Control’ function to trigger earlier via their smartphones. Users
also receive warning messages via the app when the motors of their tools are
stopped, for instance due to overheating.
The GWS 18V-125 ISC Professional cordless angle grinder also offers this fea-
ture. In addition to the information and settings that can be accessed via smart-
phone, this tool is equipped with an electronic HMI color display on the top of the
tool. This ensures that tradespeople always have direct access to information re-
garding the status of their tools and important tips for identifying problems, such
as the remaining running time of the new GBA 18 V 6.3 Ah EneRacer Profes-
sional high-performance battery.
The GLI 18 V-1900 C Professional worklight offered by Bosch quickly provides
ideal lighting for work spaces. The brightness of this worklight can be convenient-
ly changed using a smartphone, enabling tradespeople to prevent shadows, for
instance. The brightness values for this cordless light, which can achieve a
brightness of up to 1,900 Lumen, can be customized and then saved for use the
next day, saving time that would otherwise be spent adjusting it again.
Connected products can be configured and controlled using a single app
All measuring and power tools in the Bosch Connectivity system can be conve-
niently configured and controlled using a single app: the Bosch Toolbox App.
This app also provides tradespeople with access to “TrackMyTools”, the “Meas-
uring Master App” for documenting measured values, and the existing functions
of the Toolbox App such as a measurement camera, a building documentation,
a unit converter and the mobile catalog for professional power tools from Bosch.
Extensions to the Bosch Toolbox App are available for free in the Google Play
Store and in the Apple App Store for smartphones with Android and IOS operat-
ing systems.
The new Connectivity tools will be available at specialist retail outlets from
autumn 2016 onwards. The combi laser and the drill/driver and combi drill in the
‘dynamicseries’ will follow in January 2017. The Connectivity system is being
continually expanded.
