1 Overview

1.1 Purposes

Project survey is an important step prior to engineering construction. It produces

reliable data for engineering design, network plan and site construction. Specialists

conduct the survey and determine whether the site is appropriate for base station

deployment and what would make a suitable construction scheme. The scheme should

take into consideration that whether construction cost is reasonable, whether expected

coverage will agree with original design, and so on.

1.2 Functions

The functions of project survey are as follows:

● To ensure accurate production plan and timely delivery.

● To be the basis for data debugging and testing of the device.

● To guide hardware installation and system debugging.

● The survey reports make a part of engineering completion documents to be

handed over to the user.

● To be a part of engineering standardization management

The failure to project survey or inaccurate survey result may result in:

● The production plan can not be timely and accurately worked out, thus leading to

delay in production and incorrect data configuration.

● The delivery is delayed or the delivery quantity is incorrect.

● The site work suspends as no equipment is available for installation, hence the

entire engineering progress may be affected and the user may refuse to make final

inspection of the engineering.

1.3 Principles

In the survey, the following principles should be followed:

Perform survey in accordance with the guidelines given in this Guide.

Page 9: ZXMBW BSS (V3.21) Project Survey Guide (V2009-06)

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION. 1-2

Survey results are real and clear.

Discuss with the user on any special requirements of the user. Report to System

Department of CDMA Division or the local ZTE office on issues in need of

further analysis and approval. Report the discussion results to CDMA Customer

Service Department for recording and also to the System Department of CDMA

Division for technical review.

Perform the survey with the participation of technicians from the user. They are

expected to help with and monitor the survey process and results.

Do not miss out or repeat survey items.

Do not enter the equipment room or check out equipment in the room unless

permitted to do so by the user.

Safety first. Try to avoid personal injury and equipment damages.

1.4 Output Survey Reports

At the end of the project survey, the following reports should be completed and output:

1. ZXMBW BSS Project Survey Report (Production & Delivery Data)

2. ZXMBW BSS Environment Acceptance Report

In addition, fill out the Contract Problem Feedback Table for any problem

(configuration error, for instance) found in the survey.

3 Environment Survey

3.1 Overview

The environment acceptance is to check the onsite engineering environment,

installation preparations, and peripheral conditions for equipment power-on. In general,

the environment acceptance will be conducted for two times. The first time is often

conducted at the same time as the project survey.

Works involved in the first time environment acceptance include:

Check all environment items against the Environment Acceptance Report.

For the compulsory items that are not satisfactory in the acceptance check, urge

the user to take necessary measures and negotiate with them regarding the

deadline of completion.

For the general items that are not satisfactory in the acceptance check, explain to

the user the consequences that may result from failure to meet the requirements,

and ask them to make improvements as many as possible.

3.2 Requirements for Environment Survey and Information Filling

Please refer to ZXMBW BSS Environment Acceptance Guide and ZXMBW BSS

Environment Acceptance Report for details.

Accurate information must be provided.

3.2.1 Check Environment of Equipment Room

3.2.1.1 Equipment Room Construction and Decoration

The equipment room, once built, is not something that can be moved or rebuilt easily, it

should therefore be considered for long-term use. The civil engineering and decoration

of the equipment room must be finished prior to equipment installation, and the

requirements are given in Table 3.2-1.

Table 3.2-1 Structure and Decoration Requirements

city, and the highest record in 50 years for an inland city).

10. How can people get to the roof, by way of ladders inside or outside the building,

and whether a locked door is unavoidable, if yes, who is to turn to (name and

contact information).

11. A pole would be needed if the antenna is to be installed on the roof. Whether the

pole is high enough as the network plan is concerned and whether its diameter

ranges 60mm~120mm as it should be. Also take wind protection and lightning

protection into consideration. Every pole used for antenna installation should be

protected from lightning strikes. Where the pole is connected to the ground cable

should be protected from rust and corrosion.

12. The horizontal distance from the lightning arrester to the omni-antenna should be

no less than 1.5m. The antenna feeder should be covered in the protective range of

the lightning arrester, which is 30º for open area and mountain top, and 45º for

other landforms. The lightning arrester of a directional antenna can be installed

directly at the top of a pole.

13. GPS antenna should be installed at an open place. Preferably it is clear within 150º

of the GPS antenna’s elevation angle.

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION. 4-4

Fiber Interface

Fiber length: the distance from BBU fiber port to the user’s fiber access point.

The common types of fiber interfaces opposite to BBU include FC, SC and LC. At the

BBU side, the interface is LC.

As for fiber type, single and multimode are available, which should be selected based

on the user’s fiber type.

The common fiber connectors are described as follows:

FC: with metal housing and threaded body, mainly appearing on ODF.

SC: for connecting GBIC module and mainly used in routers. It is square shape

design, with push-pull latching mechanism.

ST: applicable to ODF. It is round, with twist-lock bayonet coupling (for 10Base-F

connection, the ST connector is often used.)

LC: for connecting SFP module and mainly used in routers. With modularized RJ

latching mechanism, it is easily operated.

The fiber connectors are illustrated below:

Page 27: ZXMBW BSS (V3.21) Project Survey Guide (V2009-06)

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION. 4-5

4.2.6 BBU-RRU Fiber

The connection between BBU and RRU is done in one of the two ways: direct

connection with a single fiber and connection via an ODF. The later is suitable for long

distance connection.

Direct fiber connection

Fiber length: The fiber is single mode by default, at a rate of 1.25G or 2.5G,

depending on the RRU type. The length of the fiber is the distance from BBU to

RRU, which should be surveyed for each sector. The cabling route should be

considered.

Connection via ODF

Confirm with the user if ODF from BBU to RRU is required. If yes, determine the

installations positions and measure the distance.

From BBU to ODF: the cabling distance from BBU to specified port of ODF

From RRU to ODF: the cabling distance from RRU to specified port of ODF

Common fiber connector types include: FC, SC and LC.

4.2.7 Length of BBU’s Power Cable

If M07 cabinet is configured, the length is 2m.

If the user provides -48V DC power supply, it is the distance from BBU to the power

terminal of the user’s -48V power supply. In any case, the power cable should not

exceed 30m.

Page 28: ZXMBW BSS (V3.21) Project Survey Guide (V2009-06)

ZXMBW BSS Project Survey Guide For Internal Use Only▲

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION. 4-6

4.2.8 Length of RRU’s Power Cable

The length RRU power cable should be surveyed for each sector.

If M07 cabinet is configured, it is the length between RRU and M07 cabinet.

If the user provides -48V DC power supply, it is the distance from RRU to the power

terminal of the user’s -48V power supply. In any case, the power cable should not

exceed 150m.

4.2.9 Length of AC Power Cable for M07 Cabinet

length of the ground cable is the distance from the equipment to the nearest grounding

busbar.

B9100: 10m2 cable with a default length of 0.5m.

M07 cabinet: 16m2 cable with a default length of 5m.

Simple gantry/HUB cabinet: 16m2 cable with a default length of 5m.

RRU: 16m2 cable with a default length of 5m.

4.2.11 GPS Feeder Length and Pole

It’s the distance from BBU to GPS’ mushroom. The distance should not be greater than

100m; otherwise plan for another location for the mushroom.

By default, the GPS pole and its installation parts will not be delivered. If they are

required, indicate in the survey report. The GPS pole should be vertically installed,

applicable to the scenario where GPS is installed on a roof.

4.2.12 Main Feeder Length

RRU should be installed at a place as near to the antenna as possible so as to reduce the

fading.

At present, 3m and 5m ready-made feeders are available. If a feeder longer than 5m is

required, it has to be made at the site.

The principles for feeder selection are as follows:

2.3~2.7G: If the required length is less than 19m, use 1/2" feeder; if the length is

between 19m and 25m, use 5/4" feeder; if the length is greater than 25m, it had

better not using the feeder.

3.4~3.6G: If the required length is less than 16m, use 1/2" feeder; if the length is

between 16m and 21m, use 5/4" feeder; if the length is greater than 21m, it had

better not using the feeder.

4.2.13 Cable Tray

Survey this item if a cable tray is required to be installed or added.

First decide whether an indoor or outdoor cable tray is required, and then measure the

length and width of the cable tray.

Page 30: ZXMBW BSS (V3.21) Project Survey Guide (V2009-06)

ZXMBW BSS Project Survey Guide For Internal Use Only▲

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION. 4-8

Indoor cable tray: It is used for indoor cabling, and each section is 400mm (width)

x 1.5m (length). Its height can be adjusted with the hanging and lengthening parts,

ranging from 0.7m to 1.4m.

Outdoor cable tray: Each section of cable tray is 200mm (width) x 100mm (height)

x 2.0m (length). The cable tray should be installed 150mm above the ground.

4.2.14 Quantity of Feeder Windows

If the feeder has to run through the wall (for RRU installed indoors), the feeder

window is required.

For 1/2” feeder, use 4-hole 1/2” feeder windows.

For 7/8” feeder, use 6-hole 7/8” feeder windows.

For 4/5” feeder, use 4-hole 4/5” feeder window.

4.2.15 Quantity of Copper Grounding Busbars

Determine the quantity according to the actual situation.

4.3 Typical Installation Scenarios

The WiMAX system adopts BBU+RRU architecture and mainly works on 2.4GHz and

3.5GHz bands. The high frequency bands may result in high feeder loss. As a result, it

is suggested to install RRU at an outdoor place near the antenna.

hardware and clarify the hardware details, so as to prepare for the installation design

and onsite installation.

The hardware survey covers the networking diagram, equipment installation,

equipment room layout, detailed cable distribution diagrams, equipment power

connection diagrams for this phase, and present slot layout of the equipment whose

capacity is expanded in this phase.

5.3.1 Equipment Room Environment

Most BTS equipment rooms are unattended. In addition to meeting related

requirements of the equipment, the room should be fireproof, safe, waterproof,

dampproof, shockproof and lightning.

Page 37: ZXMBW BSS (V3.21) Project Survey Guide (V2009-06)

ZXMBW BSS Project Survey Guide For Internal Use Only▲

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION. 5-2

The bearing capacity of the room should be no less than 450Kg/m2.

The net height of the room should be no less than 2.7m. If it is difficult to meet

this height requirement at an office, the height can be lower so long the equipment

can safely run.

The heights of the lamps: The lowest standards are 150 ~ 200LX at the horizontal

plane and 30 ~ 50LX at the vertical plane. The horizontal plane is 0.8m above the

ground, while the vertical plane is 1.4m above the ground.

Reinforcement measures should be taken during equipment installation.

The surface of the room should be horizontal, with an error no more than 30mm.

The surface of the room should be leveled, and the fluctuation should be no more

than 2.0mm for every 2.0m.

If there are windows, dustproof, fireproof, waterproof, heat-insulation,

wind-resistance and light shading measures should be taken.

5.3.2 Cable Hole

The lead-in window should be directly and reliably installed on the wall or a

window.

Waterproof measures should be taken between the lead-in window and the

wall/window.

All unused holes on the lead-in window should be filled with plastics.

The opening of lead-in window should not damage water pipes, beams or other

structural parts of the building.

Unless specifically indicated, the lower level of the lead-in window should be at

the same level as the indoor cable tray.

If other windows are to be opened, ask the user for approval and take necessary

fireproof and safety measures.

5.3.3 Power Supply

The equipment room should be equipped with special AC power distribution box

or cabinet.

The power supply system should be reliable and properly grounded.

Page 38: ZXMBW BSS (V3.21) Project Survey Guide (V2009-06)

ZXMBW BSS Project Survey Guide For Internal Use Only▲

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION. 5-3

Two kinds of lighting systems should be installed in the equipment room:

common and emergency.

220V power sockets should be available in the equipment room for routine

maintenance and rush repair in the night.

5.3.4 Main Equipment Installation

Determine the type and number of main equipment required.

Make clear the dimensions and weight of the equipment.

Determine the location and arrangement of the equipment, where future expansion,

facilitation of installation and maintenance should be taken into account.

Make clear the wiring terminals of the equipment, avoiding incorrect connection

of signal cables and power cables.

The arrangement of the equipment has direct impact on the routing, so be

carefully and try not to interwind the cables that may interfere with each other.

The main equipment should be reasonably arranged to save space in the

equipment room.

Certain space should be reserved in front of the equipment for operation and

maintenance, for example, opening the door or plugging the boards.

It is forbidden to install other devices above the main equipment, such as lighting

and smog sensor.

For details, please refer to the hardware installation manual of each product.

5.3.5 Outdoor Cable Tray

Measure the three dimensions or sizes of outdoor parts of the building that are

related to cable routes, as well as their relative distances and relative positions to

the cable tray. These parts include water storage tank, pipes and other facilities.

The outdoor cable tray's height should be determined based on site situations, but

in any case, it should not exceed 500mm, preferably 300mm.

The installation of outdoor cable tray should follow these principles: save

materials, be in good appearance, try to avoid winding, be secure and reliable, and

facilitate maintenance.

Page 39: ZXMBW BSS (V3.21) Project Survey Guide (V2009-06)

ZXMBW BSS Project Survey Guide For Internal Use Only▲

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION. 5-4

The width of a cable tray is often 400mm. The space between cross bars should

not exceed 800mm.

Survey the specific location of each support. The space between supports should

not exceed 4000mm in case the cable tray is installed at a lower place or 3000mm

in case the cable tray is installed at a higher place. There should be supports at any

bend or at the starting and end points of a climbing.

In addition to normal grounding points, the cable tray should be grounded at any

bend or extending part.

5.3.6 Directional Antenna

The horizontal spacing among the antennas of the three sectors of a BTS should

be no less than 1m.

The antenna of ZXMBW BSS cannot be opposite to the antennas of other systems,

they should keep a distance, either horizontal or vertical, of at least 1m.

The diameter of the pole for antenna installation should range from 60mm to

114mm.

The actual hanging height of the antenna should be consistent with the network

optimization result, and its installation location should meet engineering design

requirements.

The antenna should installed in the protection area of lightning arrester, which is

within 45° of depression angle of the antenna in normal cases, or 30° in case of

mountains or lightning-stricken areas.

The antenna should be reliably and firmly installed to resist certain wind speeds.

The error of antenna’s azimuth should be less than ±5°, and that of pitch angle

should be less than ±1°.

5.3.7 GPS Antenna

The GPS antenna should be installed in an open area so that the antenna can

receive the GPS satellite signals as many as possible. Often, it is installed on a

roof or lower part of an iron tower so as to shorten the feeder and reduce fading.

Page 40: ZXMBW BSS (V3.21) Project Survey Guide (V2009-06)

ZXMBW BSS Project Survey Guide For Internal Use Only▲

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION. 5-5

The GPS antenna is often installed within the 45° protection area of the lightning

arrester. If it is not in the lightning protection area, it must be equipped with a

separate arrester.

5.3.8 Relative Position of ZXMBW BSS Antenna to Satellite Antenna

Try not to install the BSS antenna and the satellite antenna on the same platform.

If they have to be installed on the same platform, the BSS antenna should not be

installed within an area of 150° in the front of the satellite antenna, so as to

prevent the side lobes’ interference.

If the BSS antenna has to be installed within the area of 150° in the front of the

satellite antenna, remember to keep a safety distance of over 20 wavelengths

(mobile antenna wavelength), and control the height of antenna strictly so that the

valid part of the BSS antenna is placed out of the visible range of the satellite

antenna.

5.3.9 Relative Position of ZXMBW BSS Antenna to Microwave Antenna

Try not to install the BSS antenna and microwave antenna on the same platform.

Page 41: ZXMBW BSS (V3.21) Project Survey Guide (V2009-06)
