Welcome to the 2019–20 Zurich International Orchestra Series at Cadogan Hall.

As ever, we welcome acclaimed international orchestras and artists to Cadogan Hall, celebrating the best musical talent from around the globe. This season is no different, with orchestras arriving in Chelsea from Sweden to Siberia, St Petersburg to Prague.

Soloists this season include world-renowned familiar faces and rising young talent: from Miloš Karadaglić, Freddy Kempf and Jean-Yves Thibaudet to Pavel Kolesnikov, Yeol Eum Son and Alexandra Dariescu.

This season is packed with Russian music by favourite composers Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich, performed by a number of Russian orchestras including the mighty Mariinsky Orchestra with Valery Gergiev. We also look forward to presenting evenings of Spanish and French music, as well as two great Mahler symphonies – his First and Third.

I hope you enjoy browsing the 2019–20 season and look forward to welcoming you to Cadogan Hall.

Tuesday 12 November 2019, 7.30pm

Mahler Symphony No. 3

Ester Pavlů mezzo-soprano Pietari Inkinen conductor

‘Just imagine a work of such magnitude that it actually mirrors the whole world,’ said Mahler of his Third Symphony as he wrote it during his summers at a tiny cabin by the lake at Attersee. His surroundings certainly impacted him, and the pastoral themes of nature ring through the Symphony. This is not just a picturesque scene of birdsong and flowers though – Mahler’s ambitions were loftier than that – and his Third Symphony achieves them: depicting the forces of the natural world through to the heavenly beings that created them.
