Zürich as the pivotal point of SwitzerlandSituated in the center of Europe and right at the heart of Switzerland, Zürich has connections to more than 150 scheduled flight destinations thanks to Zürich’s international airport. Zürich’s Main Rail-way Station is just a 10-minute rail journey from the airport. Zürich is the ideal base for all top Swiss destinations; all of them are accessible quickly and easily due to the densest public transport network in the world.

More cultural highlights:

Zürich is rich in cultural highlights. Starting with the silhouette of the city on the River Limmat, there are eye-catching churches such as the Grossmünster Church with the Karlsturm, which is open to the public, and the Fraumünster Church with its world-famous chancel windows by Marc Chagall. Another historic sight in the Old Town, which is around 2,000 years old, is the Schipfe artisan street, one of the oldest city quarters, and St.Peter’s Church with the largest clock face in Europe.

Zürich is always on the move: in areas of the city such as Sihlcity, Neu-Oerlikon, and Zürich-West, where the clatter of machinery was once to be heard, converted factory buildings have been in-stilled with new life, offering a combination of cul-ture, shopping, gastronomy, wellness facilities, and overnight accommodation, with industrial charm. A culture center has been built in the time-honored shipbuilding halls in Zürich-West, incorporating a branch of Zürich’s Playhouse Theater, a restaurant, tower bar, and a jazz club. This area is spectacular in both cultural and architectural terms.

The same applies to the Swiss National Museum close to the Main Railway Station, one of over 50 museums in Zürich; the building, which is over 100 years old, is reminiscent of a fairytale castle. While numerous cultural events and concerts take place in the courtyard, the past comes to life behind the building’s time-honored walls. Here, the Swiss Natio-nal Museum houses the most extensive collection re-flecting Swiss cultural history. The Kunsthaus Zürich (Museum of Fine Arts) also invites visitors to go on a journey through time – offering everything from contemporary art to 15th-century masterpieces. The Museum Rietberg with its spectacular emerald-like glass pavilion is regarded as one of Europe’s leading museums of non-European art. The density of gal-leries is also typical of Zürich: with over 100 galle-ries and distinguished auction houses, the city on the Limmat is one of the world’s leading art trade centers.

Zürich’s cultural institutions seduce visitors with high culture on the stage. The opera house presents the greatest number of opera premieres in Europe as well as the fascination of Heinz Spoerli’s Zürich bal-let. Zürich’s Tonhalle Orchestra performs high-caliber concerts with first-class acoustics.

Culinary temptationZürich offers culinary temptation of the highest or-der. The city has everything from gourmet temples offering true Zürich classics to trendy venues, and from outdoor dining in rural settings to gastronomy in converted factory buildings.

A number of guild rooms belonging to the craftsmen’s guilds which governed Zürich from the 14th until the 18th century are now public restau-rants renowned for Zürich specialties in the classic style. What better venue can there be for sampling Zürcher Geschnetzeltes (sliced veal) than a historic guildhall? Globetrotters wanting to enjoy typical Swiss dishes like cheese fondue, raclette, or rösti get their money’s worth in Zürich – whether in a rustic Stübli parlor or enjoying summer temperatures at an outdoor venue – pulsating city life included.

Creative gastro entrepreneurs have made use of the space in empty factories in Zürich’s former indus-trial quarters to realize their innovative ideas. Here, old and new have combined in remarkable fashion behind old walls, for example at the Sihlcity former

paper factory, in Zürich-West or at the premises of the former Hürlimann brewery. Here, the charm of industrial buildings meets contemporary design, and cuisines from around the world delight the palate.

Zürich’s numerous outdoor restaurants make it pos-sible to experience great scenery and culinary treats at a single venue. A quarter of all restaurants extend their hospitality facilities with outdoor seating ar-eas during the summer months. The choice ranges from restaurants in romantic courtyards in the Old Town to garden terraces with breathtaking views, as well as to lakeside and riverside venues. Several of Zürich’s swimming pools are transformed into bars and lounges after dusk.

Brunching at the weekend has become something of an institution in Zürich. Numerous charming ca-fés and bars offer lavish buffets or extensive brunch menus on Saturdays and Sundays. Zürich’s residents start their free days with cozy get-togethers, chats, and feasting on whatever their culinary heart‘s desire.

Pulsating city life day and nightZürich offers the liveliest nightlife with the highest density of clubs in Switzerland: everything from par-ties at the legendary Kaufleuten to the best of the 1980s at Mascotte, the city’s oldest club, and the alternative scene around the Rote Fabrik.

Lift off at night, dive in during the day – in which other metropolis is it possible to bathe right in the city center in clean river and lake water? With the highest density of swimming pools in the world, Zürich makes this possible – for example, at the women’s pool at Stadthausquai, the Seebad Enge lakeside pool, or at the riverside pools of Schanzen-graben and Oberer Letten. These bathing facilities are transformed into smart bars and lounges with cultural programs at dusk – creating the ultimate meeting places for warm summer nights.

In April, the summer season is heralded by Sechse-läuten, the most traditional of Zürich‘s festivals: riders in historic costumes, a snowman figure re-presenting winter, the so-called Böögg, and flowers are characteristic of this spring festival of the guilds. Highlights of Zürich’s events calendar during the summer include the Street Parade, the most colorful house and techno party in the world, and the Zürich

Festival, a unique mix of opera, concerts, drama, dance, and free theater.

Open-air concerts featuring national and interna-tional stars such as Live at Sunset and open-air ci-nemas such as Filmfluss complete the program for the summer. And when summer draws to an end, the Zürcher Theater Spektakel (international theater festival) presents the highlights of the magical open-air season once more in the form of one of the most important European festivals of contemporary dra-matic art. This is followed by the 11-day Zürich Film Festival featuring international celebrities, as well as numerous Swiss and foreign films – premieres, new discoveries, and classics. In winter, Christmas mar-kets provide inspiration for unusual gift ideas, with Christmas events creating a magical Advent atmo-sphere throughout the Zürich region. Guests and re-sidents welcome the new year with New Year Magic, a magnificent display of fireworks, hosted by the Zü-rich hoteliers. The cameras of the sporting world are also trained on Zürich several times a year at events such as Weltklasse Zürich (international athletics meeting), where the entire international athletics elite stands at the starting line.

Shopping in Zürich provides inspiration for both lovers of exclusive brands and followers of fashion. Zürich is famous for its luxury goods, international brands, the rich tradition of many of its shops, and sophisticated Zürich labels. “Lädelen” is what Zürich residents call strolling through the city’s many di-verse shopping districts.

Some 150 years ago, part of the city’s fortifications were transformed into what is arguably the most fa-mous Station Road in the world, the Bahnhofstrasse, linking the latter with Lake Zürich. Exclusive depart-ment stores, boutiques selling international fashion labels, and high-quality jewelers line the street like a string of pearls.

Trend and tradition meet in Zürich’s Old Town on the banks of the Limmat. Trendy shops, jewelers, Zürich labels, and fashionable hairdressers can be found here alongside craft shops, antique retailers, book-

shops and florists. This mix of many different spe-cialist shops, which can only be found here, makes the Old Town a truly unique shopping area.

The former industrial quarters of Zürich-West & Aussersihl will appeal to fashion lovers. Here, de-signers surprise their clientele with new creations every day, causing international furor with their sophisticated Zürich labels. Shops, restaurants and galleries under the former viaduct arches invite cu-stomers to linger and browse for a while.

The shops at the airport and at Zürich’s Main Railway Station are open 365 days a year, selling fashions, souvenirs, Zürich specialties, and upmarket watches. In the duty-free area beyond passport control at the airport, passengers can buy duty-free goods and benefit from the savings made compared with high street prices.

In Zürich, nature can be found not only outside the city gates but can also be experienced at innu-merable locations in the city itself. With its nu-merous parks and gardens, idyllic oases such as the Lindenhof viewpoint and the Schipfe artisan quar-ter, as well as boat trips on Lake Zürich and the River Limmat, Zürich makes the hearts of friends of the natural world beat faster. And in the wilderness of the Sihlwald natural forest, indigenous animals such as deer, woodpeckers, eagle owls, foxes, and others can be experienced in their natural environment.

The Uetliberg, Zürich’s local mountain, is a breath-taking viewpoint offering panoramic view of the city and the region to the snow-covered Alps on the horizon. After traveling a short distance, it is even possible to touch snow and perpetual ice, for example on the Titlis or the Jungfraujoch. It is also worth making a detour to the Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest waterfall. In fact, from Zürich, Switzerland’s top destinations can easily be reached on short or day trips, making it possible to experience the com-

Green oases in and around Zürich

bination of Swiss sights during the day and the wide range of culture, gastronomy, and nightlife after re-turning to Zürich. Both Goethe and Mozart enjoyed Zürich as the gateway to the Alps in their day.

If you feel thirsty in Zürich, you can simply take some refreshment at the next fountain: with around 1,200 wells, Zürich is one of the cities with the greatest number of fountains in the world. The quality of the water is also very good in the River Limmat and in Lake Zürich, inviting residents and guests to take a dip in numerous lakeside and river-side pools in the middle of the city.

As soon as winter comes and the first snow falls, the footpath to the Uetliberg is transformed into a to-boggan run, and, in the city, ice-skating rinks provide opportunities to enjoy winter sports. But when tem-peratures are cool, it is still possible to immerse your-self in a tropical environment, thanks to the Masoala rainforest, Switzerland’s one and only rainforest, a conservation project managed by Zürich Zoo.

Visit Zürich’s discovery region: Baden, Winterthur, Lake Zürich, and Zug can all be reached by public trans-port in a very short time and offer a diverse range of cultural and leisure pursuits.

Zürich – the discovery region

Baden: city of diversityThe Romans were here. Then came Goethe, Nietzsche and Dürrenmatt to top up their energy levels in 47 ºC/116.6ºF thermal waters. These gush forth from 18 springs and made this small town on the Limmat a lively resort. Nowadays, Baden offers a wide variety of attractions in well-tended urban green spaces, as well as international culture festivals, a diverse theatrical scene, relaxing wellness oases, and the Grand Casino.

Winterthur: photographic capitalWinterthur houses 16 museums, which are often located in romantic parks. The Oskar Reinhart collections, the Villa Flora and the Art Museum have achieved international fame. In addition, this city of culture is re-garded as the European competence center for photography, thanks to the Photographic Museum and the Swiss Photographic Foundation. Winterthur’s heart pulsates in the pedestrian zone of the picturesque Old Town – shops, restaurants, markets and festivals breathe life into the historic walls.

Lake Zürich: pure enjoyment by the waterThe region around Lake Zürich is a natural paradise. Sports enthusiasts can discover this diverse region by hiking around the Lake Zürich Trail. There are numerous sights worth visiting and impressive natural attrac-tions along the route, as well as restaurants offering regional delicacies to be discovered. A boat trip on Lake Zürich is essential for those who want to take it easy. A visit to the medieval town of Rapperswil with its castle and Switzerland’s longest wooden bridge is also highly recommended.

Zug: combination of city and countrysideZug is welcoming and full of attractions. The historic center features castles, towers, magnificent villas, and the Zytturm (clock tower), landmark of the city of the Kyburg. Numerous specialty restaurants delight the palate, and the two lakes invite visitors to take easygoing boat trips. The Höllgrotten caves are some of Switzerland’s most beautiful dripstone caves and a popular destination. Zug invites visitors to experience unforgettable moments.

History 15 BC: the Romans set up a customs post known as “Turicum” on the Lindenhof; today this area is a

popular vantage point, offering views of the well-preserved historical Old Town. During the Middle Ages, Zürich was an important pilgrimage site as the burial place of the remains of the

martyrs Felix and Regula, Zürich’s patron saints. Zürich was granted the right to be a free imperial city in the 10th century. In 1336, Rudolf Brun founded the Constitution of the Guilds. In 1351, Zürich joined the Swiss Confederation. During the 16th century, under Huldrych Zwingli, Zürich became the starting point and center of the

Reformation in German-speaking Switzerland. In 1833, the city fortifications were razed to the ground. In 1847, the “Spanisch-Brötli-Bahn” took its first trip from Zürich to Baden. With the construction of

Zürich’s Main Railway Station and the Gotthard Tunnel, as well as the founding of the Kreditanstaltbank (today Credit Suisse), the Swiss statesman Alfred Escher created the necessary structures to promote transportation and business in Zürich. In 1855, Gottfried Semper built the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich (ETH). For centuries, Zürich was the starting point, home and stopping-off place for such avant-garde writers

and artists as Mozart, Goethe, Lenin, Georg Büchner, and Thomas Mann. In 1946, the people of Zürich voted in favor of building Zürich Airport, which today serves as a major hub

for international flights. Towards the end of the 20th century, the former industrial district began to be instilled with new urban

life. Numerous new experiential and party centers are developing as a result.
