The Monarch is in Trouble.Here's Why.

We're killing Our Monarchs.

Monarchs made headline news when thenumber of monarch butterflies hibernatingin Mexico plunged to its lowest level ever. Inearly 2014, monarch butterflies were foundin only 1.7 acres - compared to a high of 45acres in 1996.

The reason is because milkweed plants aredisappearing all across the U.S. Milkweed isthe monarch butterfly's only source of sub-stance. Their habitat is disappearing.

What's Happening to Milkweed?

The milkweed plant is a hardy plant that usedto be common among roadsides, grasslandsand cornfields from Mexico to Canada andall across the U.S.

It's the only plant that the monarch caterpil-lar will eat. After hibernating in Mexico, themonarchs begin their journey north in Feb-ruary or March. But butterflies only live twoto six weeks, when they mate, laying its eggson a milkweed plant.

So the monarch butterflies seen by people inthe northern U.S. and Canada are actually adifferent generation than the monarchs thatleft Mexico!

Monarch caterpillars need the milkweed plantsto grow into monarch butterflies. No milk-weed, no monarchs. It's that simple.

No Milkweeds. No Monarchs.

The milkweedplant is threatenedby many factors:urban develop-ment is a primaryreason.

Some people cutdown milkweedbecause... well, it looks like a weed.

Some estimate that the number of milkweedplants has declined by as much as 80% withthe widespread spraying of weed killer.

The habitat is disappearing ... and so is ourmonarch butterfly.

Monarchs in Mexico.

Down in Mexico, there's another problem:illegal logging of Oyamel fir tress is killingthe monarch butterfly's winter shelter. But-terflies clump together by the thousands inthese trees after making the final trek downin the fall.

At last count, monarchs only covered 1.65acres in the forests west of Mexico City,compared to nearly 3 acres the year before.In 1995, at their peak, monarchs covered 44acres.

"The (monarch) migration is definitely provingto be an endangered biological phenom-enon." Lincoln Brower, a leading ento-mologist at Sweet Briar College in Virginia.
