ARTIST CAMP / Dunaföldvár / 2003university project (2nd year)lecturer: Tamás Karácsony DLA

The site is located on a hill in the outskirts of Du-naföldvár in the neighborhood of fruit-trees. The area overlooked the river Danube. The challenge was to create an artist camp, which is suitable for local-made artworks to exchibit too. An entrance lobby with information, a cafe, a class-room, an exchibition room and stores were placed in a central buliding. Separated houses were estab-

lished for artists, where the living function and the atelier were placed to diff erent storeys. The sunk courtyards became the place of rest and relaxation, while the upper fl oors gave the calmness for cre-ative works. The buildings were pitched with local cutted stoneblocks and fi t with wooden window-frames. The ateliers were orientated to the north set up with sliding wooden shaders.

OPEN-AIR CINEMA AND MEDIA LIBRARY / Eger / 2006university project (4th year)lecturer: Tamás Karácsony DLA

Eger is a medieval town in the eastern part of Hun-gary. Two buildings of the library and musical col-lection from the XVIII. century lay on the edge of the downtown and facing to a common courtyard, but run separatly. Formerly the only open-air cinema of the town was operated in the garden, but nowa-days it is abandoned and out of function. My idea

was to revive the open-air cinema and fi ll the empty garden with life and culture. With one media library building, which consist of a cafe, a classroom, small media rooms and video editing spaces I linked the three buildings to each other. The new build-ing shows plastered facades from the street, but in the garden it is trying to be like a garden pavilion.

SPECIAL REHABILITATION SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN / Girincs / 2007university diploma projectlecturer: Tamás Karácsony DLA

For my diploma project I chose an existing mansion near to my birth place, northeastern part of hunga-ry. The mansion hosted a rehabilitation school for mentally disabled children, but the management of the village looked for a new place for the school to give the masion a new function. The masion was bulit in the XVIII. century and has a beautiful garden with sycamore trees. Children living here are tought to the basic household activities and gardening to integrate them into society. I found some old draw-ings shows that there was another french-style

garden next to the masion’s garden. I placed the new buliding complex to this garden following the guidelines of the old system. The complex contains a gym, few classrooms, a household building, a water therapy pool and sleeping rooms with community places. The volumes got rough plaster surface with smoooth parts around the windows and above the cutted volumes. Covered wooden strucures were designed on to the old garden pathes to link the separate buildings to each other and create com-mon outdoor spaces.

TIMBER STORAGE BUILDING FOR FORESTRY / Budapest XII / 2004with Gábor Turányi, t2a offi ce / fi rst built object /

During the university years I had the opportunity to work in the t2a offi ce for one summer as an ar-chitect assistant spending my traineeship and design my fi rst architectural object. This was a simple timber storage building, which was located

next to the forestry designed by Gábor Turányi. The geometry of the antracit metal sheet roof fol-lows an existing concrete retaining wall which forms the volume of the building. The build-up has wooden structure and timber covering.

TWO FAMILY HOUSES / Dunaharaszti / 2009preliminary plan with Tamas Vörös

The site is located at the edge of Dunaharaszti, in the neighborhood of a Danube canal. The plot is part of a newly allocated residental area. The cus-tomer’s request was to design two family houses, both sould have separate gardens and pools and

designed with integrated garages. The main task was to fi nd the appropriate intimacy between the two separate houses. The building has smooth grey plastered walls and white box-like windows.

VULCANO PARK MUSEUM / Celldömölk / 2009competition with Dániel Déri, Panni Bittó, 2nd prize

The vulcano park museum building was placed at the foot of the Kemenes hill, on the verge of the town and the natural enviroment. The basic con-cept of the building and the sorroundings was based on the hexagonal basaltorgans. We used the architectural abstraction of this naturally oc-curring structure. Focusing to the system, which is

using unit elements it involves diff erent meanings. At close it is a stirring park, built on the same ele-ments, meanwhile inside it shows a hardly defi ned fl owing space. The basaltorgan segment become divided park and building along a broken line. But the scheme is fully visible only from the mountain-top.

SEMI-DETACHED HOUSE EXTENSION / Budapest XI / 2009-2010under construction

The existed building was located in Budapest’s XI. district in a characteristically semmi-detached housing pattern. The building was one-storied with pitched roof. The design program was to redesign the groundfl oor, remove the previous, low qualitied extension and extend the house with new spaces. The idea was to accomodate to the neighbor build-

ing with the roof geometry as far as possible from the street, and extend from the garden. According to this principle the building has plastered surface from the streets and timber covering from the gar-den. An additional wooden protecting roof covers the terrace.

AIRPORT OFFICE PARK / Vecsés / 2006design proposal, collaborated with Balázs Marián, Kertész Architectural Studioparticipated in conception and competition drawings, 3D

The aim of the design proposal was to develop a rentable offi ce building complex next to the main airport of Budapest, called Ferihegy. The investor’s demand was that the building has to be built in four phases. The volums has white plastered fa-

cades with bands of continuous windows enable complete fl exibility for the interior fi nish. Under the building complex a two-storied underground car park was designed.

YACHT CLUB AND LODGING HOUSE / Balatonfüred / 2006collaborated with Kertész Architectural Studioparticipated in building permission plans and construction drawings

The yacht club is a building complex planned into the port of Balatonfüred, directly to the lake-shore. In the close neighbourhood, towards the mole there is a historic building, a restaurant, on the other side a new, free standing development was made along the promenade, roughly simulta-neously with the clubhouse. The fi rst phase of the planned complex, its wing towards the promenade is already realized in which café and shops are in the ground-fl oor and upstairs apartments serving for guests of the yacht club are built. Further parts of the club function like ship storing, snack-bar,

sanitary blocks and further lodging places – mass quarters and apartments – belong in the 2nd phase. In its appearance the construction adjusts itself on principle to the surroundings with the plastered fa-çade of uniform surface, diversifi ed by large panels of wood covering, levelling windows and a series of shielding lamellas bordering the corridor in front of the rooms. Also a pergola joins to the building serv-ing as limitation for the promenade and port func-tions. With its high-quality details and timbering the erected wing of the building is a determinant object of the newly developed waterside parade.

RIVERPARK OFFICE BUILDING / Budapest XI / 2006-2009collaborated with Kertész Architectural Studioparticipated in building permission plans

This offi ce building is erected in a determinant re-gion of Pest on the bank of the Danube, on a place that can be excellently seen both from Gellért-hill and from the whole bank side of Buda. It consists of two buildings one of them is a characteristic of-fi ce building of vertical façade, set up in the 1920s, under the protection of historic buildings. Our task was its renovation and alteration. For the neigh-bouring vacant lot we have designed an offi ce building functionally united with the maintained building. We have planned an underground car park of 3 fl oors under the demolished building and

partly under the quadrangle. The new building is of balanced frontal appearance with stone face-work, showing a lattice-like structure, joining with its vertical elements to the next-door old house. Both wings of the building dispose of separate entrances and two independent communication cores, to these are connected the air-conditioned offi ce rooms which can be used as single-space offi ces or divided into offi ce cells. The fl at roofs will be pass-able terraces with mobile plants also a garden de-signed for high standards belongs to the building.

INFOPARK OFFICE BUILDING / Budapest IX / 2007-2009collaborated with Kertész Architectural Studioparticipated in building permission plans

The offi ce block will be erected on the bank of the Danube in Buda in the Infopark, a newly developed area built up with offi ce buildings. Its mass and ground plan are determined by a formerly elaborat-ed city-planning program. It consists of two blocks closely connected with each other and enclosing a quadrangle. in compliance with the planning pro-gram the lower block follows the line of the boule-vard with its arched façade covered with a curtain wall, while the higher block is straight and places itself on the major development co-ordinate of the area. On the roof of the lower mass there is a green surface, passable terrace, while on top of the higher

block we have designed a superstructure of charac-teristic form and metal covering surrounded by a ter-race. The façade is adjusted to the environment with its dark-coloured brick facing, in which the bands of continuous windows enable complete fl exibility for the interior fi nish. The band system is intensifi ed by the metal bands running in the level of the brick fac-ing. In some places we have established multi-story high glass surfaces disrupting the frontal order. In the ground fl oor there are three entrance halls for the offi ces from where the offi ce areas are accessi-ble in the general fl oors. Under the building a two-storied underground car park will be constructed.

HALLER GARDENS OFFICE BUILDING / Budapest IX / 2005-2008collaborated with Kertész Architectural Studioparticipated in construction drawings

From historical points of view this region of Buda-pest on the bank of the Danube had an industrial character because of the mills and the former Dan-ube ports. Some old buildings are of high standard and represent appreciable architectural worth, and we were anxious to save and revive these assets in our newly erected offi ce building. The building is a development in unbroken row with a quad-rangle, in its mass showing simultaneously its closed character and openness. From Haller utca we have powerfully moved this block, at the cor-ner the main entrance is formed as a portal. The quadrangle enclosed by the wings of the building are „green” courtyards, we gave utmost attention to the air-space proportion. The indoor green gar-dens are connected by a passage system, from here open the restaurant, café and other public areas,

further 5 vestibules. A high value is given to the building by the roof-gardens, roof terraces from where excellent panorama opens to the city. The façade of the offi ce building has an exacting look, it is provided with a reddish sandstone covering. On principle the continuous windows determine the frontal surfaces in some places interrupted by vertical continuous glass surfaces or by vertically perforated stone-texture surfaces. Functional sys-tem of the building is clear and transparent. The offi ce rooms for rent can be well divided into cells, or they can be furnished as single-space offi ces. The tenants can almost freely develop the kitchenettes, servers, fi le departments. Under the building there is a three-storey underground car park, the engi-neering rooms are located primarily in the attic.

SHOPPING CENTRE / Hajduböszörmény / 2008collaborated with Kertész Architectural Studioproject architect, participated in building permission plans, 3D

The site is located in the downtown of Hajduböször-mény, northeastern part of Hungary. The shopping centre will be placed among historic, traditional buildings. According to the concept the buliding will comprise several small shops and a big food store at the ground fl oor. The shops will be acces-sible from a longitudinal “mall”. For evolving the

concept the greatest challenge was to integrate the buliding into the urban complex further to safe-guard the traditional development and scale of the town. The buliding complex has a coventional plas-tered frontage combined with stone facing, and has traditional pitched roo f to accomodate the neigh-boring buildings.

WEÖRES SÁNDOR THEATRE / Szombathely / 2008competititon, 4th prizecollaborated with Kertész Architectural Studio

Aim of the design competition was to establish a theatre and centre of public function in the down-town of Szombathely while – if possible – preserv-ing the existing hall built in the seventies. Our plan keeps the old stone-covered building and combines the old hall of public function and „stone block” of the new theatre by a trembling „folding screen” and simultaneously also separates them. The com-ing and going urban crowd invades the arising intermediate space, which can serve as open-air

theatre in summer, further café and restaurant will open here. Another function of this intermediate space is that it leads from the municipal square through to the park behind the building complex. The building front is transparent, but in certain places where the function requires, it becomes solid provided with a metal covering. The whole surrounding block has a metal-plated roof ascend-ing stepwise in a broken line towards the theatre.

Page 38: zsolt frikker's portfolio_2010

WEÖRES SÁNDOR THEATRE / Szombathely / 2009competititon, shortlistedcollaborated with Kertész Architectural Studio

The site and arrangement of the new theatre are de-cided both from architectural points of view and by reason of the intention of the Inviter of Tenders, very likely because of the lesson of the previous compe-tition and can be logically followed, respectively. That means that according to the construction site the planned theatre shall be erected next to the existing and remaining entertainment building. Although the contour of the construction site in legal terms enables to draw the building to the square, but as a result of the connection between Március 15. tér (square) and other parts of the town

structure the actual construction site is clearly the area neighbouring the entertainment building. According to our concept, taking into account also the above circumstances, we regard as an impor-tant aspect the outlines of the designed theatre building and the correct positioning of its frontal level. The primary consideration on our part is to ensure that the auditorium-stage-backstage axis of the theatre should coincide with the main ac-cess route. Thus there is a natural link among the main entrance, the foyer and the large auditorium.

HOTEL, RESTAURANT AND CONFERENCE HALL / Budapest IX / 2008collaborated with Kertész Architectural Studioparticipated in construction drawings

The planned building of 283 rooms, consisting of ground fl oor+7 stories, will be erected on a vacant corner lot in the downtown of Budapest as a mem-ber of the three-star Campanile hotel chain. The building mass evolved in compliance the stringent local regulations, reacts sensitively to the corner situation it widens and makes spacious the mouth of Lenhossék utca. Its façade is simple with plas-tered architecture and stone-panelled footing in two stories. The aperture order is uniform, grated, where parapet glass fi elds determine the size of apertures. A striking detail of the building is the ar-

cade-like two-story high curtain wall in the ground fl oor-1st fl oor towards Üllői út, which in the 6th-7-th fl oors of the introverted façade returns as a real withdrawal in the form of terraces belonging to the rooms. In the building there is to be found an un-derground car park in 3 levels. In the ground fl oor of the hotel there are vestibules and a restaurant attending the hotel guests, while the part of the fi rst fl oor towards Üllői út is occupied by a fl exibly transformable conference hall. We will develop a pleasant garden in the quadrangle where an out-door terrace will be provided for the restaurant.

MARKET-HALL EXTENSION WITH OFFICES / Budapest XI / 2007-2009collaborated with Kertész Architectural Studioproject architect, participated in building permission plans and construction drawings

The old market, constructed in the seventies was situated at the corner of Fehérvári út and Október 23-a utca, in a signifi cant traffi c junction point in Buda. In 2000 our offi ce reformed this building. The new construction top it, enclosed it and provided for a modern frame. Later, in 2007 the new exten-

sion fully enclosed the old market construction add-ing goods distribution at downstairs and two fl oors of offi ces upstairs. The new extension was provided with white-polished concrete panel covering as the recent extension was.

ART, CULTURAL, EDUCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL CENTER / Siófok / 2010competition with Kertész Architectural Studioparticipated in conception and competition drawings, 3D

The local government of the Balaton town an-nounced a tender for the reconstruction, extension and landscaping of a former bakery that currently operates as an exhibition facility instead of its origi-nal function. The bakery is located in a one-family-house neighborhood, in the middle of an irregularly shaped plot. This condition had signifi cant eff ects on our architectural approach. In our work, the old brick-coated building remains an exhibition area

and an individual theater and conference building, a creative workshop and a building for the perma-nent exhibitions will be built additionally. The con-cept expresses the organic concord of the old and the new buildings as if a casting had been placed on the central building of the bakery, and then been cut into pieces and pulled apart. The prevailing ma-terial in the new buildings are copper plates, which matches the reddish colors of the bakery building.

FOOTBRIDGE / Békéscsaba / 2010preliminary plan with Kertész Architectural Studioparticipated in conception and preliminary drawings, 3D

During the full structural renovation of the railway pedestrian overpass, our architectural task was to create a covered bridge. This task was fulfi lled us-ing spectacular, colored polycarbonate plates. The

alternating blank and covered surfaces and the col-ors that become brighter and brighter towards the center of the bridge give playfulness to the project.

DAY NURSERY / Törökbálint / 2010competition with Kertész Architectural Studioparticipated in conception, competition drawings and 3D

Törökbálint is a permanently growing town of Bu-dapest’s agglomeration. Few years ago the town established a new kindergarten and then a new nursery was planned to be built. A suburban green area with existing trees has marked out for the nurs-ery. The program was to set up 6 group rooms and the necessary services. Our concept was to design a friendly place which can be a transition between the scale of a family house and a public building so

that the children could feel like at home. One of the most important part was the approach of the house so that we kept a group of large existing trees and established a courtyard in front of the buliding. The group rooms had coloured plaster rendering and were directed to the southeast with full glass. The other part of the building - consist of com-mon spaces and services - covered in wood.
