    Zombie_bob.

    In this issue:

    As 2009 progresses

    the wiki gets busier

and busier. It soonbecame apparent that

    we could use the help

    of an extra Administrator.

    Especially with

    the hectic Summer

ZSDW GAZETTE IS BACK AFTER 5 MONTH BREAK

The past few months have been

    hectic, so unfortunately the news-

    letter

    was put on hold. Hopefully,

    now that things have calmed

down, I can continue writing this

with the aid of my new co-author

    Zombie_bob.

    Zombie_Bob joined the wiki last

February and has started to make

his name as an active member of

    our community. His contribution

    to the ZSDW Gazette through

    his knowledge of weaponry can

    only make this newsletter better.

    JamesRascal, founder of the

    ZEEST; Zombie Encounter Strike

    and Survival Team has suggested

that we work together on the

    next issue.

This should allow for a more in

    depth newsletter with a wider

    variety of articles and more

    interesting reports.

    With the additional support from

    John_234 and the moderators we

should be able to have the Zombie

Survival and Defense Wiki in an orga-

nized and easy to use state by the end

of the Summer . We appreciate the

patience of the community during the

next few weeks as we delete, merge

    and move redundant pages.

    ARTICLE OF THE WEEK!

EostreRites has complied a very detailed and

complex survival plan. We recommend that

you follow the link in the picture and check

    out her plan.

Here is an extract from the page:Plan A is

contingent on my identifying non-local zom-

bie activity quickly, and planes not yet be-

ing grounded. It is the part of my plans that

is least likely to be feasible, but if enacted

offers a high survival probability. It simply

involves ying to a safer location to dig-in.

Upon realizing that the zombie apocalypse

has begun, I will grab my BOB and head for

the airport. I will head for one of ve loca-

    tions, including location NAV-R.

GUN OF THE WEEKM4A1 CARBINEOne of the most common and popular

weapon systems in the world today is the

M4A1. This weapon system is light

    weight, compact, accurate, with medium

stopping power. There are many different

variants of this rie, such as the AR-15

w/ collapsible butt stock, M4A1 Car-

bine, Colt 920 and 921. The M4 ModularWeapon System (MWS) res the NATO

standard ammunition of 5.56x 45mm. Its

    characteristics include: gas operated, air-

    cooled, magazine-fed, selective re, and

    a 4-position telescoping stock. The M4 is

ideal for survival situations as the weapon

system is durable, accurate, easy to main-

tain and use. It has a max effective range

on an area target of 800m, and 550m on a

point target. With a muzzle velocity 2,900

ft/s (880 m/s) the M4A1 is deadly andaccurate. The main difference between the

M4 and the M4A1 is the replacement of

the burst function with the Fully Automat-

ic function. The has caused for some hang

ups in the system, the carbon build up

inside the upper receiver has signicantly

increased with the rate re causing more

jams and double feeds. With a rate of

re of 700-950 rounds/min at the cyclic

rate, the integrity of the hand-guards was

noted to be weakened due to excessive

    heating. Many believe an automatic

function on an assault rie is unneces-

    sary.

    THE GOOD

The focal point of the M4A1 is its

    customizability, with the added rail

system interchangeable hand grips. And the ability to interchange be-

tween a carrying handle, ip sights,

or an optic of your choosing has made

the M4 variants a favourite among

    militaries and enthusiasts alike. End-

less options such as light attachments,

    laser sights, M203 attachments, and

    the M26 MASS shotgun attachment

make this a very personal weapon sys-

tem. With a full magazine this weapon

    only weighs6.9 lbs (3.1 kg).

    THE BAD

The aw of the M4A1 is the ease of

the weapon system to jam. A small

amount or dirt, a few grains of sand,

or excessive carbon inside the cham-

ber will cause several problems until

you have the time to clean it, the most

detrimental of the problems is the

double feed, two rounds are pushed

into the chamber at the same time, usu-

ally denting and rendering one, if not

    both rounds useless.

    OVERALL

With a longer list of good and bad fea-

tures than were mentioned, the M4A1

stands out as an excellent weaponsystem due to its ability to be what the

user wants it to be, from a sniper rie

to the breach and clear rie of choice. I

uses the standard NATO round and has

    civilian counterparts, making ammo

    and modications or replacement parts

easier to nd. This by far is not the best

rie or theworst, but it is still an excel-

lent weapon system in a x.

    WEAPON OF THE WEEKTHE SHOVEL

Z-day just breaks and you are just

starting to mobilize, and you now

need to ght your way to cover or

weapons; what could you use? You

nd a shovel; light weight, has an

edge, and has good reach. Is this a

good choice for you weapon of op-

    portunity?

    The shovel has several advan-

tages for a weapon of opportunity.

Perhaps the greatest is reach. You can

hit and chop your way though the un-

dead with out getting in arms reach.

However, to use it most effectively

youll need to hold it higher up the

    handle, bringing you closer. The

length of the shovel allows for sig-

    nicant amounts of damage using

the leverage of the handle in your

swing. The face can be used either

to cause blunt force trauma, or on

edge to hack open the target. Since

the shovel is not a blade, however,

its not the most effective way to

use it. The biggest drawback of a

shovel is its durability. The face of

the shovel can detach after re-peated use, the shovel handle itself

    may break after repeated impact

stress. And it can splinter giving

you open wounds in a scenario

where you will most likely not

want a way for blood to get in. The

    shovel is recommended if...

You can hit and chop your way

    through the undead without

    getting in arms reach
