St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Health Ministry January Newsletter

“…we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces

character, and character produces hope” (Romans 5:3-4)

Your Thyroid

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck, between the notch in your collarbone and the Adams apple. Note: women do have an Adam’s apple, although not as prominent as in men. The thyroid gland has 2 lobes and while it is small in size, it plays a huge part in the metabolic processes in the body. The 2 main hormones produced by the thyroid are T3 and T4. Over or under production of these hormones can produce havoc in the body. Have you ever wondered why your Primary Care Physician (PCP) asks you to swallow during a physical exam? The swallow test checks your thyroid and the PCP is looking for protrusions or bulges. In addition, a blood test is ordered. Beginning at age 35, a TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is ordered. If this is abnormal, a thyroid panel, specific to T3 and T4 is ordered. Depending on the results, you may be referred to an endocrinologist who specializes in disorders/diseases of the thyroid. Symptoms of under or over production of the thyroid mimic other disease processes, and for that reason you must be alert to changes in your body. The following is a list of symptoms that should be discussed with your PCP.

1. Fatigue: You sleep longer than normal AND take frequent naps.

2. Weight Changes: With under active thyroid, metabolism slows to the point of not being effective at

all; thus, weight gain. With overactive thyroid, you have difficulty gaining weight no matter how

much you eat.

3. Hair and Skin Changes: This is usually the 1st sign of thyroid problems. Dry hair, loss of hair, and

balding in both men and women occur, as well as dry, scaly skin.

4. Muscle and Joint Pain: Unrelated to physical activity or osteoarthritis. Key: Pain occurs in multiple

muscles and joints.

5. Bowel Disturbances: With under active thyroid, you suffer with chronic constipation. With over

active thyroid, frequent, loose stools accompanied by an urgency to get to the bathroom occurs. This

frequency occurs regardless of how little you eat.

6. Menstrual Disturbances: With under active thyroid, women may not have any period at all. With

over active thyroid, heavier periods, a shorter cycle, and spotting between cycles occurs.

7. Mood Changes: Mental sluggishness and inability to concentrate.

8. Cold Hands/Feet or Excessive Sweating: Regardless of seasonal temperatures or post-menopausal

changes.

9. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS): While this has created much controversy, studies have shown that

people with CTS who have been treated for an under active thyroid, no longer suffer with CTS

symptoms.

Your body is always alerting you to changes. Bottom Line: Know Your Body. Listen to Your Body.

January is National Thyroid Awareness Month. For more information visit: www.thyroid.org

Music Ministry

Did You Know?..."Once in Royal David's City" was originally written as a poem by Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) in 1848 to explain this part of the Apostles' Creed: “Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary.” Each stanza explores part of the contrast between Jesus' divinity and humanity. The first stanza contrasts the grand idea of “royal David's city” with the lowliness of a cattle-shed, and the second, the glory of heaven, from where He came, with the poverty of earth to which He came. The hymn ends by reminding us that Christ has ascended once again to glory, where we shall see Him, as He said: “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:3). Since 1919, the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at the Kin's College has begun its Christmas Eve service with this hymn as the Processional hymn.

“This is my wish for you: peace of mind, prosperity through the year, happiness that multiplies, health for you and yours, fun around every corner, energy to chase your dreams, joy to fill your holidays!”

Senior News

St. Mary’s Outreach Center (3900 Roland Avenue) proudly serves the greater Hampden community. Since its inception, SMOC’s work has been guided by the belief that older adults are valuable and contributing members of society. They also recognize that older adults are often the most overlooked members of society. Last year alone, they delivered $763,000 worth of services to 750 individuals. Their menu of programs includes assistance with gas & electric bills, food stamps, grocery delivery, healthcare & prescription drugs, and tax credits. They also sponsor social activities, health fairs, and wellness checkups. Call them at 410-366-3106 for more information.

Religious Education News

May you have the gift of faith, the blessing of hope, and the peace of Jesus' love, now and always. How can we best serve your Faith Formation needs? We offer youth and children's Sacramental Preparation and Religious Education classes on Mondays 7 to 8pm for Pre-K through High School. The RCIA process is for anyone who wishes to become Catholic, or to complete the sacraments of initiation, Eucharist or Confirmation. It also serves as a process of renewal for Catholics who have been away from the church for a while, to update their understanding of the Catholic Faith. Adult faith-sharing seasonal sessions (to be announced). Contact Susan Sousa at 410-366-4488 ext. 26 or [email protected] about any adult, youth, or children’s Faith Formation programs.

Respect for Life

* We sponsor a potluck luncheon and baby shower for the pregnancy center, in connection with the Feast of Epiphany, the gift-giving of the Magi to the Christ Child, and also in connection with the birth of our own spiritually adopted child. This year's event will be on Thursday, January 4 at 1pm in the sacristy. Shower gifts (new or used, wrapped or not) can be left in the bassinet in the back of the church. Please see the flyer in the back of the church for pregnancy center needs. Luncheon attendees enjoy a varied menu, good company, and the pleasure of seeing pregnancy center staff (including Deacon Monti) presented with gifts that will benefit babies and moms. If you can attend, please contact Marty Taylor at 410-235-4537 or at [email protected] to coordinate what you would like to bring to the potluck. * Words from our pregnancy center to the woman who is pregnant and needs help: "You're not alone. We offer the one thing you need most right now: an understanding and listening ear. Our trained peer counselors, nurses, and staff are here to help you make some of the most important decisions of your life. You deserve to know the truth, so you can make informed decisions. We commit to walking with you through the next steps. We will support you with material assistance, referrals, and genuine friendship. All free of charge."
