“Their Eyes Were Watching God” is considered Zora Neale Hurston’s most noble best literature work. The novel became a television drama, starring Halle Berry as Janie Crawford.

Their Eyes Were Watching God Story of a women exposed to various methods

of living. The main character, Janie, suffers from being alone and controlled in life and is seeking liberation. Janie’s inner goal is to be happy with herself and live her life according to how she should and not by family, husband, and societies way of life. Janis is partially compared to Hurston. During her life, Hurston was also married more than once. Other similarities include spouse owning a general store as well.

Janie CrawfordA lonely girl lost in a struggle to find her voice. Janie has been dominated since early years, but eventually transition to woman and obtains love.

Nanny CrawfordGrandmother who starts the initial domination in Janie's life. Nanny wants the best for her Janie, but she tries to influence Janie to marry for materialistic things & not love.

Logan KillicksJanie’s 1st husband is selfish & irrational. Logan viewed his wife a possession & not his lover

Jody StarksJanie’s runaway with love & 2nd husband is deceitful. Jody lacks real love for Janie & uses power to feel dominant over everyone

Vergible “Tea Cup” Woods

Janie’s final husband allowed jealousy to take him over in rage. Although he was Janie’s 1st real love, jealousy led to his death.
