Dear District 11 Zontians, Greetings to everyone as we move through Spring and into Summer. This Winter and Spring have been difficult for our clubs in the northern part of our District. Winter brought un- usually cold, wet, snowy and icy conditions to our northern Areas. Spring has seen a record number of storms and tor- nados to generally those same Areas. Montgomery, Tusca- loosa and Birmingham, AL, but particularly, Tuscaloosa, have experienced major damaging tornados. As I write this letter, I understand that all our Zontians in those areas are safe, although some members experienced varying degrees of property damage. One member of the Tuscaloosa Club had her business, a family Pharmacy, totally destroyed. I know we are grateful for everyone’s safety and are saddened by the property damage experienced and the destruction of communities in those areas. Our thoughts go out to our members struggling to help their affected communities. Now Tennessee is grappling with flood conditions along the Mississippi, particu- larly Memphis Our thoughts go out to our Zontians in that area as well. On a brighter note, we have almost completed or Area meetings which were fairly well attended thus far. The meetings were interactive, with suggestions made and experiences shared, as well as positive comments received from those attending. Some suggestions have been made, especially in terms of including a more com- prehensive program on social networking, since ZI has embraced and developed a policy statement re: the use of social networking as a form of communication. Some clubs have already used some of the information gained to assist their clubs in moving forward with some of the challenges they face. Suggestions made dur- ing Area meetings will be used as we plan the 2012 Area meetings. Thank you for your attendance and the suggestions made. Moving forward into the second year of this biennium, the Zonta Club of Sanibel/ Captiva are working diligently on preparing a great District Conference to be held on September 23 rd and 24 th at the Sundial Beach & Golf Resort on Sanibel Island. Dear District 11 Zontians,

Greetings to everyone as we move through Spring and into Summer. This Winter and Spring have been difficult for our clubs in the northern part of our District. Winter brought un-usually cold, wet, snowy and icy conditions to our northern Areas. Spring has seen a record number of storms and tor-nados to generally those same Areas. Montgomery, Tusca-loosa and Birmingham, AL, but particularly, Tuscaloosa, have experienced major damaging tornados.

Now Tennessee is grappling with flood conditions along the Mississippi, particu-larly Memphis Our thoughts go out to our Zontians in that area as well.

On a brighter note, we have almost completed or Area meetings which were fairly well attended thus far. The meetings were interactive, with suggestions made and experiences shared, as well as positive comments received from those attending. Some suggestions have been made, especially in terms of including a more com-prehensive program on social networking, since ZI has embraced and developed a policy statement re: the use of social networking as a form of communication. Some clubs have already used some of the information gained to assist their clubs in moving forward with some of the challenges they face. Suggestions made dur-ing Area meetings will be used as we plan the 2012 Area meetings. Thank you for your attendance and the suggestions made.

Moving forward into the second year of this biennium, the Zonta Club of Sanibel/Captiva are working diligently on preparing a great District Conference to be held on September 23rd and 24th at the Sundial Beach & Golf Resort on Sanibel Island. We look forward to seeing you there. District Conference is a time to do the work of Zonta District 11, gain and share information, visit with Zontians around the Dis-trict, renew friendships and gain new Zonta friends.

Come join in the fun!! Hope to see you there.

Wishing all of you an enjoyable Summer.

District 11 Membership News Tami Page, Lt. Governor/OMC Chairman

What a year we have had! We started this year with 930 members and 17 late renewals for a total of 947 members. As of May 7th we have 92 new members – 28 resignations – 2 transfers out and 4 transfers in. This translates into 1013 current members and 44 clubs. Last year at this same time we had 1064 members and 45 clubs. Can we retain more members this year to keep our num-bers up? What are you doing in your club to encourage members to stay on? Don’t let members walk away without at least talking about the reasons they are leaving. Be open to finding solutions for the issues at hand. If costs are an issue – can you restructure your dues schedule so members do not have to pay everything at once? If mem-bers are having a tough time finding their niche in your club – put together a meeting that showcases all of your pro-jects and programs and let members sign-up for something that captures their interest. There are many ways to en-gage folks. It is our job to be open to finding solutions for retaining our members.

If members decide to resign please ask them to complete our district exit survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QYHVFJH. This will allow us to see what the trends are in regards to members re-signing. The survey is anonymous (unless a member chooses to leave their name). If they do leave their name then I will personally follow up with them.

We are still looking for resources and tools that clubs use to recruit, retain and recognize members. If you have a brochure, outline, flyer or handout that you have used in your membership program please send it to me at

[email protected]. I am especially inter-ested in mentoring program materials. All of the items we receive are going to be vetted by the District OMC Commit-tee (to make sure we do not give out personal information and are in line with Zonta policies) and will then be posted on the District website as a resource for all clubs.

There is a wonderful quote in the book If Women Ruled the World that has really spoken to my heart. The quote comes from Dr. Dawna Markova and says;

What are your inner gift and talents? Most of us reasona-bly articulate about our deficits and weaknesses – how many we got wrong on our spelling tests, how many things we failed to accomplish during any given day. We become fluent at explaining our incompetencies, but look straight at our gifts and talents and then mutter, “Oh, that old thing?”

I challenge all of you to not only recognize your own gifts and talents but those of the other women in your club as well. And don’t stop there. Once those gifts and talents are recognized they must be put to good use or they will never fully be appreciated. How successful could your club be if each member began to recognize and use the gifts and talents they have? How much happier and more ful-filled would members be if they felt their gifts and talents were truly being used and appreciated? How many mem-bers would be retained if we made this simple act a prior-ity?

In partnership and service,

Legislative Awareness and Advocacy Information: Current projects for District 11 clubs

Jean G. Bryant, LAA Chairman

We have a full agenda of important legislation to get passed in Congress and in Florida and hopefully other states.

CEDAW Ratification: High on our priority list!!

Thank you to all who participated in efforts in November to encourage the Senate Foreign Relations Committee & sub-committee to ratify CEDAW. Zonta International had excellent representation at the Committee hearing (which I hope most of you joined on the web).

Our President Diane Curtis submitted documents highlighting Zonta’s support of CEDAW, and attended the hearing with Jason Friske from the International office. In addition, a number of Zontians from clubs near Washington DC also at-tended – helping to create an overflow of CEDAW supporters in meeting rooms adjacent to the Hearing room.

After the hearing, President Curtis submitted an additional document to the Chair of the Sub-committee that countered allegations by some CEDAW opponents who argued that CEDAW supported abortion. The document reiterated state-ments by a series of Administrations that each had concluded that CEDAW was neutral on the abortion issue. Our Dis-trict President, Jane Addams and I also submitted an additional document supporting ratification to the Committee chair.

As a result of Zonta’s strong presence and support of CEDAW, Zonta International is now officially part of one of the ma-jor US groups supporting CEDAW ratification.

I will be submitting several CEDAW template letters that Zonta members can download from the ZI website once they have been approved and posted. This plus a contact list of Senators should make it easy for our members to urge Senators to vote for CEDAW ratification.

IVAWA-2010 – International Violence Against Women Act of 2010

This is a comprehensive bill to enable the US to engage in multiple coordinated efforts to address violence against women around the world. This bill will also be posted on the ZI website along with documents of a series of Congres-sional hearings that addressed ways in which the US can combat gender violence. Equally important, the hearings re-veal that all branches of our government are committed to helping end global violence against women in a coherent way.

In addition to the documents, I will create letter templates that members can use to advocate for passage of this impor-tant comprehensive bill. I will also submit these documents for posting on our District website.

FLORIDA RATIFICATION OF THE ERA: Equal Rights Amendment

Hopefully other states that have not yet ratified the ERA will join us in the effort this year.Information will be forthcoming re. contacts for key legislators and advocacy steps that clubs can take.

In the meantime, try to get your local Chamber of Commerce & groups such as Lions and Rotary, etc. to join the effort to grant women equal rights under the U.S. Constitution.

A REMINDER: Club Presidents: Please send me [email protected] the name & contact info of your LAA Chair.

YWPA District 11 Scholarship Winner Shelly Olkey, Young Women in Public Affairs Chairman

The committee wishes to thank the 15 clubs who participated in the YWPA scholarship program this year.

These young women are all outstanding and making a decision was difficult.

We are pleased to announce our 2011 YWPA winner is Carolina Echeverri submitted by the Zonta Club of the Boca Raton Area.

Carolina’s personal goal is to earn a degree in law, and study and work in the field of political science, in particular international diplomacy. She would love to work in the State Department.

She carries a heavy academic schedule of AP, Honors, and dual enrollment (college) courses and manages to maintain an A average. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and won the state competition for the Spanish Club.

At the same time, she has put in over 1000 volunteer hours. She is the LT. Governor of the Key Club. She oversees and plans monthly service projects for over 100 peo-ple in 12 high school Key Clubs. These included a field day for people with disabili-ties, and partnered with Kiwanis, the Special Olympics and Best Buddies Organiza-tion. It was a huge success, and is now a new tradition in Broward County. She also volunteers at Children’s Harbor, a home for children who have been abused and neglected by their parents. They take them to the zoo, fly kites take them to water parks, and celebrate birthdays.

She is also class Vice President, and as such has organized many fund raising events, for many causes and student activities.

Currently Key Club and Kiwanis is partnered with UNICEF to diminish Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) from the planet by 2015.

“Being a leader shows a woman how great they can be and the impact they can make on others.”
