Our new president was sworn in at the May board meeting. Welcome Vanessa! And a huge Zonta thank you to Carla Percia, outgoing President! Your vision and leadership set the stage for our future.
EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH SERVICE & ADVOCACY
President’s Message…
Dear Zontians:
A special thank you to all for your support and dedication to the Zonta Club of Utica. I am honored to be a part
of such an amazing group of professionals, advocates, enthusiasts; women! Once again we have done a lot of
great work. The service, membership, and advocacy committees have gone above and beyond developing
community projects and providing supports. As we move forward, we will continue to build on the things we
are doing well and find new ways to advance women’s advocacy, education and health.
It was wonderful to see new faces at our May meeting! Welcome new member Shannon Cayea, CEO Hospice
& Palliative Care. There are also 2-3 prospective members that we anticipate joining by September! Please
continue to think Centennial as prepare for an amazing celebration of Zonta. It’s not too late to serve on the
centennial committee. I will be sending out email over the summer for a planning meeting. It’s going to be
fabulous and fun!
As the year comes to a close, we will celebrate with our annual picnic on June 20th at 5:30 pm catered by
Seymour’s diner at Schuyler Commons. Enjoy our beautiful newsletter, and your summer! I look forward to
seeing you soon!

Refugee Community Health Presentation –
Joan Gallimo, Marina Kistner ( Immunization Coordinator for Oneida County Health Department ) and myself presented to
19 Refugee Women from Sudan and Mylasia and spoke Arabic and MyMy. An interpreter was present, but the women
appeared to understand well. Some Local volunteers who assist the Refugee Women were present also.
Joan presented on preconceptual health and how to maintain health during pregnancy.
Marina presented on immunizations for children, pregnant women, and adults.
I spoke on Women’s Health, breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer, the importance of screening and the Cancer Services
Program for uninsured individuals.
At the end of the presentation we gave each of the ladies a bag. The bag contained personnel care items and some
kitchen items. The presentations and bags were well received by the Women. It was a very rewarding experience and
much appreciated by all present.
Thanks,
Bea Allison
Women’s Vets Project
On May 31st, members of the Service Committee, Trish, Susie, Bea and Joan gathered to create Zonta Bags with
personal items for our Women Vet’s. Our new Zonta “grocery” bags were used and filled with shampoo, conditioner,
body wash, lotion, feminine products, a scented candle and a personal item. The bags were filled right at the center and
delivered. A total of 60 bags were provided.
WERC TO WORK Graduation
On June 8th, we once again participated in the graduation program for WERC, recognizing the efforts of the 9 graduates
with special Zonta bags made up just for them. The bags included a gift card from Burlington Stores and contained items
that would give these graduates a start on their new career. The WERC program teaches women skills that they need to
return to the workforce or to enter it for the first time later in life. We are pleased to continue to support them and I
was honored to be able to represent the club.
