From a thought to
an idea,
The ZNDC as we know it is a constellation of
pan Zimbabwean efforts to contribute a brisk to its
development. From NUST to UZ, from Chinhoyi to
Mutare and now in the heritage City, ZNDC has come
of this age.
In celebrating its fifth anniversary, let us ensure that
we concretise and propel its founding values of inclu-
sivity, tolerance and knowledge seeking attributes.
Viva ZNDC viva!

Zimbabwe National Debate Championship has proudly turned five.
The build up from the 2009 has seen many successes and challeng-
es that together have contributed to the quality of debate in Zimba-
bwe today.
The years passed have seen Zim-
babwe Debate Network growing
from convening four institutions
to 21 in 2012, successfully forward-
ing a team to the Worlds Universities Debate Championship in Ber-
lin, 2012/13, successfully convening the Pan African Universities
Debate Championship 2010, getting a green light from the Zimba-
bwean Government through the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary
Education to run debate in all institution of higher learning in Zim-
babwe.
Starting from the previous year, institutions have successfully con-
vened Zonal debate championships with two zones managing to
convene the Zonals successfully.
Did you know?
ZNDC is the largest none-
sporting event in Zimbabwe
VII
This was followed by a successful tournament that was hosted by
Mutare Teachers College. The tourney had a total of 72 teams and
an adjudication team that comprised of renowned adjudicators. The
Champions were a team from Bulawayo Polytechnic which then
won the ticket to represent Zimbabwe at the Worlds Universities De-
bate Championship in Berlin.
2013 saw an improvement with Bulawayo, Mutare and Harare
convening successful Zonals that led to the selection of the teams
that represent the institutions at this ZNDC. This then led to the
success of this fifth edition which is hosted by Masvingo Teachers
College.
For this edition, debaters can expect world class trainers and adju-
dicators, top drawer debates and quality debaters. Winners get a
ticket to represent ZDU in Chennai, India for the 34th edition of
WUDC while the team that breaks first after the preliminary rounds
will represent ZDU at the Worlds Universities Peace Invitational
Debate Championship in Malaysia.
That could be you…

PLACES TO BE IN THE HERITAGE CITY
Masvingo (before 1982 known as Fort Victoria) is a town in South Eastern Zimbabwe and the capital of Masvin-go Province. The town is close to Great Zimbabwe, The national monument from which the country takes its name. The town was known as Fort Victoria until 1982, when its name was briefly changed to Nyanda. Within a few months it was changed again to Masvingo when it was discovered that Nyanda did not translate very well between dialects. It is the oldest Colonial settlement in Zimbabwe.
