Hospice care is ministration through the dying process and beyond for families. This includes an Interdisciplinary Team that meets the needs of every individual case, from anticipatory grief which is experienced during a loved ones journey toward death, the needs of the dying, and including the Gift of a Perfect Day, where the wishes of the one in process are granted by a very creative team. This work is an example of humans being the hands, feet and heart of God working to make the process of dying as beautiful as the experience of new life. It is very important for the Church to be involved in providing resources and counsel in this area, and though death is certainly not something we generally look forward to, it is very much a part of life. Hospice care provides honor, integrity, community and even fun in this process, helping families with the grieving process, which is unavoidable. This is something to think about. This is something to talk about. Blessings, peace, and love, Pastor Kristin

Those in whom the Spirit comes to live are God's new Temple. They are, individually and corporately, places where heaven and earth meet. ~N. T. Wright

Youth YakConfirmationConfirmation has been accomplished by your reading of this Lamplighter. Ty Wagner and Garret Fiegenbaum shared their personal testimonials on May 20, and gave all who heard tremendous joy and hope for the future of our congregation and the Church in general. May 27, Pentecost, the young men received their first Holy Communion and experienced the rite of Confirmation, becoming members of Zion United Church of Christ, and the wider United Church of Christ as well. It will be very exciting to watch where Spirit leads them as they continue to grow, seek, learn and experience our amazing God--Lord and Creator of us all. Youth Fellowship will take a break for the summer, and unfortunately we'll say goodbye to Vernon and Kimberly Koch as Youth Leaders for the past three years. We want to thank you so very much for your dedicated service throughout this time--our young people have benefited tremendously from their experiences with you. Blessings to you as you rest in Spirit's guidance! Pastor Kristin

Board of Christian EdVacation Bible School Operation Overboard will meet for one day, Saturday, July 28, from 9am3:30pm. June 10th a meeting to discuss Sunday School curriculum will be held after worship. Lunch provided! The Summer Worship Schedule begins June 3rd. Folks will gather at 8:45am for food & fellowship, activities starting at 9:15am, followed by Worship at 10 AM. Food for thought: Prayer for returning Sunday school teachers and finding new teacher and new youth fellowship leader. Being a youth fellowship leader is a great way to get involved with the kids. Its only a few hours a month and extremely rewarding! June meeting is scheduled for the 18th at 7:00pm

ChoirThanks so much to our wonderful choir and its extremely talented and fun director, Teresa Begemann. We will look forward to picking up our notes again in the Fall! Have a great summer everyone! The Choir will be on break for the summer, but will provide special music for Father's Day. Alice came to a fork in the road. Which road do I take? she asked. Zion DirectoryPLEASE UPDATE YOUR INFORMATION! We will have pictures taken for a new Zion UCC Church Directory in November, for sure. There just wasn't enough time to coordinate everything this Spring. The biggest part of putting this all together, is getting an update on everyone's information. Not all of the info will be in the directory, but it also is very important for our church records to be updated. So please at your earliest convenience, or even if it's inconvenient!, fill out the enclosed card and mail it back to the church, or fill one out on Sunday. Here's what we need-- Your Name/Spouse/ Children, Address/Phone(s)/Email, Birthdates, Wedding Anniversaries. Angie will put all on Excel, so it will be easily accessible for the directory. Thanks so much! Pastor Kristin and Angie

The Lamplighter MISSOURI ON THE M..O..V..E.. In Lafayette CountyRESULTSThe Zion UCC walkers completed the Missouri on the Move walking competition on April 28. Everyone on our team completed the full eight weeks and tallied 7,347,347 steps as a team. There were 16 members on our team. The top walker for the overall contest was Michael Lockhart from Odessa with 1,964,427 steps. Our top walker was Martha Hawthorne with 716,640 steps (not even close!) Several of our walkers had over 600,000 steps and that is an average of around 5 miles a day which is pretty fantastic. Almost all of our walkers increased the numbers of steps that they started with and achieved the goal of increasing their steps by 2,000 per day. The challenge is to now stay at that level and keep walking. 2200 steps is equal to about a mile. Hopefully all those walkers will sign up for the Habitat for Humanity Cannonball Run/Walk on June 16 at 7:30 a.m. Zion needs to have a big enough team to get the team trophy back! Thanks to all who participated and continued even through injuries and illnesses to complete the walk. KEEP WALKING AND STAY FIT THIS SUMMER. Martha Hawthorne

PRETZEL TidbitsThe pretzel is believed to have been invented by an Italian Monk in the 6th century who rewarded church-going youngsters with this doughy bribe. The word pretzel probably descends from the Latin word "Pretzola," or "little reward," and evolved into the Italian word "brachiola" which means "little arms." Legend has it that the pretzel represents arms crossed in prayer, and that the three holes represent the Trinity. The pretzel probably traveled to America with the Palantine Germans who were later known as the Pennsylvania Dutch. Not too surprisingly, the German word for pretzel is "bretzel".

SAILSAIL was honored to provide a banquet and program on Friday evening May 18th for Garrett Fiegenbaum and Tyrel Wagner and their parents and siblings. Garrett and Tyrel are being confirmed on May 27th. SAIL continues meditating on The Beatitudes each month at their meeting. In May, Juanita Wright led the discussion on Matthew 5:6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled." In June, Ruth Dierking will lead the discussion.

The Lamplighter The Wooden BowlA frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-yearold grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult.. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. 'We must do something about father,' said the son. 'I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.' So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, 'What are you making?' Just as sweetly, the boy responded, 'Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up. ' The four-yearold smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks.. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled. Q: Who was the greatest male financier in the Bible? A: Noah . He was floating his stock while everyone else was in liquidation!

WEEK OF JUNE 10On June 10, after the luncheon and discussion of the Sunday School curriculum for Fall, my family and I will be leaving for a brief trip to Muskegon, Michigan, for a wonderful celebration. My grandmother, Verna Aardema, was the author of 33 children's books, retellings of African and Mexican folktales. She did all her research at Hackley Library in Muskegon, and on June 12 the library will become a Literary Landmark because of author Verna Aardema. There are only 100 Literary Landmarks in the country. In 1976 WHY MOSQUITOS BUZZ IN PEOPLE'S EARS won the Caldecott Award for illustration. It was told in animation by actor James Earl Jones at one point. Her book WHO'S IN RABBIT'S HOUSE was told by former first lady Barbara Bush to a group of youngsters in the later 1990's, and Mrs. Bush entertained my grandmother at the White House for tea. Verna Aardema's books have been published worldwide and in many different languages, and WHO'S IN RABBIT'S HOUSE (which is a play) performed in schools all over the country. Austin and Donovan, as her youngest great grandsons, will unveil the plaque presented to Hackley Library, and there will be a grand celebration at the Muskegon Museum next door to the library. On May 31 I read WHY MOSQUITOS BUZZ... at the Higginsville Library, and have shared two more of my grandmother's books with kids there previously. So, we will be gone the afternoon of June 10, and hopefully return no later than the 15th--it is a very long drive, but I can still be reached by cell phone at 660-641-1038. Blessings and love to you all in Christ! Pastor Kristin

Butterfly RoomWith fathers day this weekend I think of my dad who was the ultimate fix it guy. A few months back the garage door opener at the house went on the blink. So I get up on the ladder and take it apart, because this is what guys do, and I find a 3 cents plastic dohickey thats broken. I just happen to have the manual for this thing. I look at the parts diagram and find that the 3 cent plastic do-hickey is part of an assembly. Ya just cant buy the do-hickey, ya have to buy the assembly for $20. At this point I think to myself, What would Al do? Al would be my dad. Every time someone in the family had something that broke it always wound up in Als possession. I mean there wasnt anything he couldnt fix, repair or replicate. If ya asked him if the repair would last, his standard answer was I think it will last a coupla weeks. I cant remember anything ever coming back for a 2nd fix. With Fathers day this week-end I just thought an article on my dad would be a nice tribute. My father always told me to take pride in whatever you do in life. Whether youre the CEO of some fortune 500 company or digging a ditch, give it your best shot. Every time I finish some project at work my boss always asks me, how do you know how to do all this? I just tell him, I learned from Al. So, if your dad is still around give him a call or if youre close enough, give him a hug. Me, I will be launching a coupla balloons this week-end thanking the guy who made me what I am today. See ya next time.. Oh yeah, I rigged the plastic do-hickey and the garage door is back in service, Al woulda been proud of me. Pierre Milot, Ph.D. E-Mail: [email protected] Life is no brief candle to me.
