Pastor Ryan Eikenbary

Grace and peace to you all, This time last year I was interviewing to become the pastor here at ZLC. I am grateful for the trust you placed in me in calling me to be your pastor – I love being here and having the privilege of ministering among and with you all! It is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of our first year together and I am excited what the coming years will hold for us as a community that seeks to worship God and live the gospel. This fall commemorate, the 500

th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Please make sure

you mark down the events going on October 28-29. That weekend we will celebrate the 75th

anniversary of ZLC, burn our mortgage, and celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation,

though celebrations and worship! It is a weekend to take time out from the business of life and celebrate the faithfulness of God in our lives. I hope many of you will join us for the festivities. The heart of being a product of the Reformation is that we acknowledge that we as people and communities need God to “always be reforming” us for the sake of the mission to which we have been called in our baptisms. Adult Education will resume on Sunday September 17. We will spend the fall looking at the 10 Commandments. These Commandments are at the heart of our faith life as they instruct us in living into Jesus’ call to each of us to “love God and neighbor.” I encourage those of you who have not taken advantage of the education hour to come and participate. In light of this class, we will be confessing the Commandments in worship and they will be the basis of the children’s sermons for the fall as well. Blessing to each of you as we enter into another season of life. Peace,

Pastor Ryan

Women’s Retreat

The women’s retreat will be held from October 6-8 at Eagles’ Rest in Twain Harte. The topic

will be Biblical Women and Todays Challenges. The discussions will be how we are different

and still the same. The presenter will be Carolyn Hinshaw, the same lady who presented last

year.

The cost for the retreat will be $125.00, the same as it has been for a few years. The money is not due until October but save the date. If you have questions call Sharyn Carr-478-6032 or Vaness Kuhlmann-473-3001.

From the desk of the Zion Lutheran Music Director: Well it's a busy busy time here at Zion as we in the music ministry swing back into our Fall schedule! The ZLC choir will be starting weekly rehearsals commencing on Wednesday, Sept. the 6th at 7pm, following our evening worship service at 6:30pm. Have you ever been interested in singing in choir for part of the year or a liturgical season? If so, join us; all commitments are welcome and reading music is not a necessity. Only a love for music and music-making is needed. I'm pleased to announce that for the "For the sake of art" fundraiser on Sept. 23rd the Alex Reyes Band will be performing. Alex Reyes is a graduate of the jazz performance program at the University of the Pacific and now teaches there. His band will be soulful, bluesy and jazzy all in one performance, make sure you come out for that. On October 13th we are glad to have the pleasure of the talented cellist Erik Urbina hosting a recital for both him and his students here at Zion in our main sanctuary at 7pm. Concerts by Erik are eagerly an-ticipated, you'll want to make sure you come out for this special event. On October the 15th I will be giving a lecture during the adult education house on Martin Luther's German Mass. Deutsche Messe, or The German Mass, (Deutsche Messe und Ordnung des Gottesdiensts) was pub-lished by Martin Luther in 1526. It followed his Latin mass, Formula missae (1523) The German Mass was completely chanted, except for the sermon. Research is ongoing, and will be part of our celebration at Zion Lu-theran of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. In celebration of that 500th anniversary I will be performing an original composition for Organ in the style of J.S. Bach called "English suite 8 and 1/2" ( a little inside joke since Bach only wrote 8 English suites. I figure my modest suite will be worth at least a 1/2). This will be a world premiere, and it will be performed as a prelude for the Reformation service on October 29th, which we hope to see you all at! Enjoy your Fall, may the blessings of the Lord shine upon you and find you in grace and love. May the Lord al-ways be with you! Your Music Director Rhondda Nunes

During the summer when families and individuals go on vacation, attendance at church is less. Now that we are entering fall there are more activities each month. Be sure to read the newsletter so you can take part in more events. When you are entertaining in your home you may want to borrow items such as chairs, tables, table cloths or coffee pots. You are welcome to borrow articles if you wish to, however, it is necessary that they be checked out with Genevieve in the office. When you return the items please let her know. The monthly church clean-up is the second Saturday of the month from 8:30 – 10:30. Just like at home, at church we must keep up with the clean-up. If we all help it will not be a problem. Contact Stephanie Hensley (762-7752) to see what needs to be done. In Christ, Vaness Kuhlmann Congregational President

Buildings and Grounds I wanted to thank everyone who showed up on Saturday, August 12, for the August work-day. Also a big thank you to Burke for filling in for me since I was not there as I was attending a fundraising event to fund research for my Dad’s cancer. September’s workday will be on Saturday, September 9

th beginning at 8:30am. If you cannot

be there during that time, I will be signing volunteers up to do tasks sometime during the month. These tasks will include everything from erasing writing in the hymnals to repair plumbing (these are just examples, we do not need any plumbing work that I know of). October’s work day will be on Saturday, October 14

th beginning at 8:30am. I will post a list of

tasks to be done in the narthex. Sincerely, Mrs. Stephanie Hensley

Vacation Bible School This past July Zion's campus was bustling with excitement and preparation for the Maker Fun Factory 2017 Vacation Bible School. Twenty two children arrived each day to hear how they were created by God and built for a purpose. There were 10 Crew Leaders volunteering to guide the children through 6 different stations where the children were greeted by 11 wonderful volunteer Station Leaders and Helpers. Children and adult volunteers sang songs about God's Love for them. they heard how God has a purpose for their lives. They heard Bible Stories, created amazing structures, played outdoor team games, watched videos hearing other children's stories about God working in their lives, Each day a different group of kids prepared yummy snacks for everyone at the Snack Factory. It was an amazing week! Thank You to each volunteer and to each child and the family that participated! Each of you made a difference Thanks for your hours of preparation, enthusiasm and love for the children, Sincerely 2017 V.B.S Director Doreen Spohn

Communications and For The Sake Of Art Ministries As I write this, we are deep in the planning and set-up stages for the upcoming season of clas-ses and events for For The Sake Of Art Ministry. Our children’s classes (for grades 1-8) will start on Monday, September 11

th from 4:00-5:30 p.m., and the first of our Saturday adult classes (high

-school students are welcome) starts on Saturday, October 7th from 10:00-12:00 p.m. As always,

all of these classes are free to attend, and no prior artistic experience is necessary. On an art class project-related front, we are asking for donations of ‘junk drawer’ items (i.e., but-tons, beads, nuts, bolts, washers, empty thread spools, etc.) for an upcoming children’s found item art class. The theme is centered around ‘steampunk’, which is a sub-genre of science fic-tion / science fantasy that Includes technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19

th – century industrial

steam-powered machinery. Then on September 23

rd, we will hold our 5

th Annual Art & Wine Show at the Crawford residence

in Morada. Tickets (with location information) are still available for this event, which will help us raise the money that pays for guest artists and supplies for the free classes we do for the chil-dren and adults. This year, we are also adding a flavored olive oil tasting in addition to our two featured wineries for this year’s event, Jesse’s Grove Winery and Omega Vineyards Winery. For tickets and information, please contact the church office or Christopher De Roos at (209) 915-3208. On the communications front, we are publishing the newsletter now on a bi-monthly basis. We hope that this change will provide you, the reader, with a better and more informative publication. And for those of you who contribute supplies and time to the Friends of the Armed Forces (FOTAF) Ministry, you will now be able to place a face with the names that are read every week with the prayers of the people. Starting on September 3

rd, we will have the faces of soldiers,

along with where they are currently stationed, appear with the announcement slides before the start of service. Until the next issue, God bless Christopher De Roos

Altar Guild

A meeting of all Altar Guild Volunteers will be held at 9am on September 7 at Bobs at the Marina (next to

Garlic Brothers). This will be a chance for us to discuss our Ministry for Zion, to talk about any changes

and to answer any of your questions. Coffee will be served on the patio and you buy your breakfast at

the counter as you arrive. Please come and enjoy some time together as we get organized for another

year at Zion Lutheran Church.

Newsletter

We are trying something new with the newsletter by putting it out every other month. The next issue will be for November/December and will go out first week of November. Everyone will have to make sure that all important dates are in and will take a little doing at first. This will save money and labor hours. Thank You Genevieve

Friends of Armed Forces Care packages are one of the biggest projects of the Friends of the Armed Forces. We currently have 5 airmen deployed to different parts of the world. In late April, Evan Costa was deployed to Africa, and is expected to be there until late October. Matthew Delgadillo left July 12

th, Rafael Olmo-Castillo left July 16

th and Jed Burlando left July 23

rd,

each for six-month deployments to the Middle East. On July 6th, I was informed that Danielle

Ziemke has again been deployed, this time to Cyprus. A list of suggested items for care packages can be found on the kiosk in the narthex or contact Jodi Landa for ideas. I have been told that zipper baggies in snack and sandwich sizes, and Lysol hand wipes are really needed. Any donations can be left in the big wicker container with patriotic ribbon sitting in the narthex. Congratulations to Rafael Olmo-Castillo who has been promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant! Please remember especially Philip Hawthorne and Joe Martinez. Both were assigned to the USS John McCain when it collided with the merchant ship. They are both ok. Philip was on leave at the time, so he was not aboard the ship when the incident happened. Joe, however, was aboard the ship. He lost everything but his passport and his computer. On Veteran’s Day Sunday (November 12) please bring pictures of your veterans to add to our mili-tary display. We have a lot of veterans in our congregation, so please don’t be shy about adding your picture!! We will also be having a special collection to support the Friends of the Armed Forc-es Ministry. Please bring items to donate for care packages and/or add a special monetary offer-ing to the offering plate to help cover the cost of shipping care packages. There will be a Red, White and Blue dessert coffee hour right after service. f you have a Red, White and Blue dessert that you would like to share, please bring it!! A free will offering will be collected here, too, so there will be many ways for you to choose how you can help. Four airmen will still be deployed during the holidays. We would like to send some special holiday care packages. Thanksgiving packages will need to be sent by Nov. 1. Christmas packages need to be sent right after Thanksgiving. Special lists of items will be added to weekly bulletins in Octo-ber and November. Please remember to pray for all active military forces, and as always, thank you for your generous support! In His service,~Jodi
