We often know what we’re looking for, but sometimes, it sure is hard to find. The magi, King Herod, and his chief priests and scribes all in search of the King of the Jews. But none of them were searching for the same reason. The magi sought a King. Scripture tells us that the magi were from the East. They were academics who studied the stars, and studied prophecies as well, including Hebrew scripture with its promises from old. They likely would have read prophecies that pointed to the new king. (Micah 5:2) They showed a willingness to seek out the source of true wisdom. The magi didn’t know what to expect. The wise men sought out a king, and instead, they found their Lord, their savior, their messiah. King Herod was seeking a rival. Herod was a ruthless leader who chose to rule with fear. Herod was going to maintain his rule through any means necessary. He wanted to seek the King of the Jews not to honor Him but to kill him. Not everyone who seeks Jesus is doing it to praise and worship Him. What about us? What do we seek? Often what we seek can be distractions that pull us away from God. God is always there for us, even when our faith, or our heart, isn’t fully following him. You don’t have to have perfect faith to follow God. The magi weren’t seeking God. But that’s what they eventually found. Throughout the Bible we hear of people who struggled with their faith. Sometimes, we’ll take the wrong path. God is still there when we might stray away from Him. Repenting means to turn around and go the other way. But no matter how strong or weak our faith is, no matter what path we follow in life, and no matter how well we follow His directions, God still loves us, and He’s ready for us.

Questions: 1. Who were the Magi? What were they seeking? 2. Who was Herod? Why was he seeking Jesus? 3. What often gets in way with our walk with God?

Please pray for Zion Members in the Military.

Perhaps you’ve felt a desire to give

more to missions.

On the table on the back of the sanctuary is the

mite box of the mission-minded LWML

symbolizing the efforts of our organization.

If you’d like to help, please consider this

opportunity and place your mites inside.

Thank you to those of

you who spotted the

LWML mite box! We

certainly appreciate

your contributions for

mission work.

It might interest you to

Lutherans Engaged in Mission This year, LEM is going to be serving the community of El Cenizo, Texas (on the US side of the

border). This is a small, very poor community with a church we have helped in the past. We will

be there February 14-23, which is over Presidents’ Day, so students only miss 3 days of school.

We plan to drive on the weekends, and serve the church & community with VBS, donations, and a

work project on Monday through Friday. The group will stay at the Latin-American Lutheran

Mission site in Laredo as we have in the past. The cost is only $400 for the entire trip! Please

join us to learn more about how you might serve God as we prepare for the mission trip.

Here is a list of items that can be collected all year long & donated at either Messiah Lutheran

Church, or Zion Lutheran Church. Feel free to use these items as a Sunday School offering

project, or a church in-gathering:

• Layette Kits – Goal of 10

• School kits – Goal of 100

Pencils, pens, notebooks, crayons or markers, kid scissors, pencil sharpeners, erasers,

construction paper, rulers, backpacks

• Hygiene kits – Goal of 50

Full size towels (new or gently used), washcloths, bar soap, combs/brushes, toothbrushes,

toothpaste, shampoo & conditioner (even hotel size), band-aids, nail clippers, small lotion

bottles

• Quilts from church groups

• Clothing for kids & adults - Gently used & laundered shirts, undershirts, sweatshirts, jeans/pants,

practical shoes or flip flops (no dressy shoes, or heels please), socks in all sizes, undergarments, etc.

• Walmart gift cards to help with the cost of the volunteer meals, and to purchase dried beans and rice to

hand out as giveaways.

• Toys – small gently used toys work best. Some ideas would be small stuffed animals, balls (especially

soccer balls), outdoor games, blocks, bubbles, etc.

• This year we do not need suitcases because we are not crossing the border, but we would store them for

future years.

Ways YOU can help:

• We are looking for an individual or group who can gather, sort and label the clothing items!

• A volunteer/group to put together layette kits for new mothers. Many items have been donated already, they just need to be assembled.

• Help with maintenance or oil changes for our van

• Attend our “Fiesta Fundraiser” – details TBA • Sponsor one of the people going on the trip
