‘So, 1956 was the rock ’n’ roll year, the year in which popular music history had its greatest musical upheaval, revolution and transformation. In the events of that one year, music changed the landscape of the world in a way it hadn’t before and hasn’t since. It blew up as a youth movement, riding the then novel emerging adolescent culture and in giving voice to a mass dissatisfaction with the status quo, and in doing so called for a new way of living. It was a reflection of a changing world, an expression of the post-Second World War American landscape. ‘

‘Musically, it was a blueprint year, a year of records and artists who drew on everything that had come before and set up everything that came after.’

RevolverBy The Beatles(Overleaf)

‘It is virtually impossible to summarize a decade as tumultuous as the sixties. The media reflected that confusion, with music in particular serving as a means of expression that heretofore did not exist. English bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones introduced America to the essence of its own culture by building unique styles from their interpretation of black musical forms that had previously gone unheralded in America. Bob Dylan invented a new form of social protest and personal expression by writing songs that demanded a sense of awareness from the listener. James Brown and Aretha Franklin brought Black awareness front and center, while seemingly ‘innocent’ bands like the Beach Boys crumbled in the midst of cultural upheaval.’

The 70s.

‘Music suffered in a manner that was unthinkable in the sixties. With no visionary leaders to unify the masses, pop culture began to splinter into sub-divisions. Instead of a wealth of ideas, the resultant diversity often resulted in ignorance and a polarity of tastes, while pop music redefined itself as a means of lighthearted, and often simple-minded, escapism. By decades’ end, a new generation of rebels tried to break down the cultural atrophy with an angry, revitalized form of rock and roll known as ‘punk music’, but mass acceptance wasn’t forthcoming until it was de-fanged and diluted into something that came to be known as “The New Wave”. Despite all attempts, nothing was able to reclaim music from the hedonistic grasp of disco.’
