The horror ! The horror !
Marlow, a seaman and wanderer, recounts his physical and psycho-
logical journey in search of the infamous ivory trader Kurtz. Travelling
up river to the heart of the African continent, he gradually becomes
obsessed by this enigmatic, wraith-like figure. Marlow’s discovery of
how Kurtz has gained his position of power over the local people
involves him in a radical questioning, not only of his own nature and
values, but those of Western civilization. A haunting and hugely influ-
ential Modernist masterpiece, Heart of Darkness (1899) explores the
limits of human experience as well as the nightmarish realities of
imperialism.

The works on paper featured in this handsome volume highlight the major themes that have
governed her artistic practice: the role of architecture as a founding point of ref-
erence; the importance of mechanics and structure; and references to nature. As author Jonathan Fineberg demon-strates, Aycock is an artist who thinks on paper. Her works are often equal
parts engineering plan and science fic-tion imagining. Visualizing such contradic-tions allows us to, in her words, transport
ourselves “farther into another place.”
Alice Aycock (b. 1946) emerged onto the New York art scene in the 1970s and is best known for her large-scale pub-lic sculptures that often combine an in-dustrial appearance with references to weightlessness as well as to science and cosmology. Aycock also has embraced the practice of drawing throughout her enormously productive career. Al-ice Aycock: Drawings is the first explo-ration of her spectacular drawings, which include elements of mirage, fantasy, and science, and evoke both abstract thinking and bodily sensation.

NEW YORK,
A charismatic pres-ence in the New York avant-garde since the early 1970s, Alice Aycock, who
studied with Robert Morris and Tony Smith at Hunter College, is well known for her monumental, architectonic and often outlandish public sculptures, such as East Riv-er Roundabout (1995) in midtown Manhattan. Towering above the FDR Drive, this whitewashed alumi-num structure with several arcing trellises resembles a disused roller-coaster. Studies for this and other major sculptures were recently fea-tured in "Alice Aycock Drawings: Some Stories Are Worth Repeating," a two-venue show constituting the artist's first-ever museum survey. It may seem odd to focus her retro-spective on works on paper rather than sculpture, but drawing has always been central to Aycock’s process.
A m o n g the 104 pieces on view, spanning over four decades, there were a wide variety of drawings—from quick sketches to computer-generated pieces—as well as a number of maquettes for large-scale sculptures and installa-tions, plus photos and other doc-umentary material. Organized by Parrish adjunct curator Jonathan Fineberg, the exhibition, though in-conveniently divided chronological-ly and geographically in two parts, offered an in-depth and ultimately satisfying exploration of Aycock's achievement. Sober and cerebral, the Grey Art Gallery presentation focused on works from the 1970s and early ‘80s.

Aycock's Earth art pieces and site-specific structures—such as Maze, a circular wood labyrinth 32 feet in diameter, temporarily installed on a Pennsylvania farm in 1972 and documented here with photos and drawings—demonstrate a preoccupation with the body's movement through space and time. Along with her peers and mentors, including Rob-ert Smithson, Gordon Matta-Clark, Mary Miss, George Trakas and Dennis Oppenheim (to whom she was married in the early 1980s), Aycock initially focused on creating open-ended situ-ations in the landscape, to be completed by the viewer. By the late 1970s, she began to incorporate machine imagery into her work, especially forms that suggest the circular motion of fan blades, waterwheels and windmills. The maquette and studies for The Savage Sparkler (1981), a large-scale sheet-metal sculp-ture that closely resembles a turbine complete with a revolv-ing drum, were among the highlights at the Grey. The Parrish segment of the show was more colorful and playful. Complex and mesmerizing, the works of the later 1980s, such as the large watercolors The Celestial City Game and Navajo Whirling Rainbow Game (both 1988), are standouts, reflecting Aycock’s interest in devising complex systems.
The former consists of a receding red-and-yellow checkerboard surrounded by a band of keyhole shapes in blue and white, evoking game board as much as city plan. Aycock embraced computer-aided design in the early '90s, which amplified and accelerated her steady stream of public sculpture commissions, such as The Star Sifter (1998), recently reinstalled in Terminal One at New York's JFK International Airport and represented by several studies in the show. Digital technology assisted in the production of some of her best recent two-dimensional pieces, including one of the Parrish's high points,Rock, Paper, Scissors (India '07), 2010, a hallucinatory image showing a tower based on the 1799 palace Hawa Mahal in Jaipur, set against a flaming red background filled with small pinwheels and turbine blades. Throughout her oeuvre, Aycock returns again and again to architecture and machinery, and she has kept these themes evolving in a remarkable way.

Known for her monumental, site-spe-cific sculptures that conflate aspects of architecture, machinery, and natu-ral phenomena, Aycock has long been fascinated by wave movements and whirlpool formations. “I was always looking for structural patterns that were alternatives to right angles and the grid and that type of organization-al system,” the 67-year-old artist says. She remembers her father, a builder in the hydroelectric industry, taking her to the beach during storms to watch the waves and joyously playing the piano in the basement as a hurricane blew through the open windows of her childhood home in Harrisburg, Pennsyl-vania. As devastating weather events have become more frequent, Aycock has plumbed the compositional forc-es of such energy. For her new series, Aycock began with diagrams of cy-clones, tornadoes, and origami shapes that she would twist, crush, elongate, and multiply on the computer to cre-ate a kind of random disorder. Then she would analyze the intersections of her arrangements to determine if they could be built with aluminum sheets. The largest of the sculptures, at 70 feet long and 12 feet high, required more than 500 individual pieces of cut and curved metal, which were welded to-gether in a seemingly weightless flurry.“To me, if these things work, it will be like stop-motion,” Aycock says. “As if it was twirling, and then—stop. Just at that instant, you’ve caught it.”
Like super twisters, spinning tops, and crashing waves, Alice Aycock’s forthcoming public sculptures will seem to race along a Midtown
stretch of Park Avenue, New York’s sym-bolic canyon of money and power and aspiration. “I see that part of Park Av-enue as a real cauldron of activity—of intense intellectual activity, competitive activity,” says Aycock, who was recently inductedinto the National Academy. “It is a visualization of that invisible ener-gy—mental, kinetic—all that hot air.” Titled “Park Avenue Paper Chase,” the series of seven large works is scheduled to be unveiled the first week of March.
