RESEARCH PROFILE Current Research Activities and Interests

Tissue engineering and stem cell technology

Bioreactor technology for tissue culture and stem cell expansion: To develop membrane bioreactors for bulky tissue culture, for stem cell culture, and micro-bioreactor technology and to develop mathematical models of tissue culture bioreactors Cryopreservation of stem cells and engineered tissue: To study the technology and underlining science in cryopreservation and vitrification to preserve living cells and engineered tissues to ensure the off-the-shelf availability to clinicians. Tissue engineering monitoring: To develop micro membrane probes, nonlinear near infrared laser optical methods, and microsensors for the monitoring cell metabolism and functions, tissue formation, and stem cell differentiation Bioseparation and bioprocessing

Protein fractionation using ultrafiltration: To separate, fractionate and purify therapeutic proteins and macromolecules using membrane technology Virus filtration: To remove viruses from bioproducts, water, and to recover viruses as products (vaccine) using ultrafiltration Freezing and freeze drying or bioproducts: To study the link between processing conditions and the biofunctionality of bioproducts (proteins, enzymes and biomass) Membrane Technology

Water treatment using membranes and Membrane bioreactors : To develop the next generation of water and waste water treatment technology, based on membrane technology, with outstanding features such as antifouling operation and low cost. Functional membranes: To fabricate functional polymeric membranes for specialised applications. Membrane bioreactors for bioerengy: To develop integrated systems for efficient biofuel production and separation

on Cui’s research outcome. With £1M investment from Chung Nam Co, a Hong Kong based global precision engineering company, Zyoxel was launched on 10 July 2009. The main business of Zyoxel is to commercialise TissueFlex microbioreactors and apply into
