Family Fun! Hi Students & Families! Here is a great ART activity that can involve your whole family. Many of you remember this from our art unit on Mental Health. It involves basic supplies (paper, pencil, permanent ink/markers) and it can help relieve some stress & anxiety people at home may be feeling.

So prepare to relax!

Set up a comfortable work space, play some favorite music, pour yourself your favorite hot chocolate, and begin. Remember, there are NO mistakes with Zentangles. Just enjoy and relax!

At first glance, a Zentangle can seem intricate and complicated. But, when you see how it is done, you realize how simple it is.

This is also a metaphor of life. Something may look complicated, but you know you can do it one simple step at a time.

• Zentangles are made by creating a ‘boundary’ in which your Zentangles will exist. Break up that boundary into smaller sections, and then fill each of those smaller sections with a design/pattern of your choice.

• To begin, look at and learn a number of standard Zentangle patterns. There are literally hundreds of them.

• Follow the steps shown over next few slides to practice.

Begin small, work on a piece of paper approximately 3.5" x 3.5" (9cm x 9cm).

Draw a border around the square of paper, about a half inch (1cm) from the edge as shown. Do it freehand and let it be 'rough'.

Again, with a pencil, draw a light random line within the border - it can be anything but keep it simple to begin with. You are aiming to create areas in which to doodle. Experiment until you get something you are happy with.

Switch to a black fine liner pen and begin to fill the shapes made by your string. Put some soft music on and allow your mind to wander. These simple patterns are called 'tangles'.
