Melbourne Grammar

• We visited the Wadhurst Campus (350 year 7 and 8 boys)

• The facilities at Melbourne Grammar were very impressive. The area that we looked at housed year 7s on the lower level of the two story building and year 8s on the upper level.

• The buildings had plenty of room to assemble the year levels.

• All year 7 and 8 students are assigned to Tutor groups. A staff member is assigned to a tutor group and along with a Head of house is responsible for the welfare of the class.

• Homework Club runs most nights of the week until 4:30pm in three rooms which is filled with Year 7 and 8 students at the end of the day.

• At Parkdale we looked at two main focus areas – Pastoral Care/Tutor programs at year 7 and student support at junior levels.

• Tutors responsible for collating data and sharing it with the relevant staff • De-privatising the classroom – creating a culture where other people are

comfortable being in other classes and having other people in their own classes.

• Structure for classroom learning environments begins with ‘Knowing your Students’ with an emphasis on the tutor teachers

• Enhanced group at year 7 for science and maths classes, otherwise students are in mixed ability classes (data gained from the MYAT testing)

• Literacy support staffed by teachers (worked into timetable) • Numeracy support – a teacher supporting students in need in class • MYAT – number, literacy, non-verbal test. 45 minutes • On arrival PAT-R and PAT-N (reading and numeracy) which enables the

school to look at value adding. Data correlates with NAPLAN. They do the same test again at the end of the year and use the data to quantify academic growth

• GRIN program for numeracy support. Targets students who are performing a little below the standard with the aim to catch them up. Consists of 20 minute lessons with the students where the language and skills are discussed that will be featured in upcoming maths lessons with the view to help students feel more confident in this area. This program is only in its infancy at Parkdale.
